“We can’t blame them,” says Fatima
Saleh al Khulaifi, PR & marketing specialist
for the Qur’anic Garden Green Projects. “They are
the technology generation.”
Fatima says living between concrete and technology,
people often forget about nature. “We have the
responsibility to tell them about the environment; that
without plants, there is no life.”
This is one purpose of the Qur’anic Garden.
The garden, which is going to be the first of its
kind, was inaugurated by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser
in 2008, planting a Sidra (Ziziphus spina-christi)
sapling at the site. When completed it will contain all
plants mentioned in the Holy Quran and the Hadith
comprising 52 species.
The plants, trees and fruits mentioned in the Holy
Quran and the Hadith are still living in the present
day. Most of them still bear the same name. Many are
mentioned as medicinal, some are mentioned as holy
plants such as the fig (Ficus carica), some are aromatic
like the basil (Ocimum basilicum), some used as cosmetics,
the henna (Lawsonia inermis) and others are
mentioned as fruits of paradise like the banana (Musa
paradisiacal).
According to Fatima, the plants come from three
geographical regions, the desert, Mediterranean and
tropical. The challenge of the Qur’anic Garden Green
Projects is not just to be able to plant and grow the
plants from the Mediterranean and tropical regions but
to be able to create a sustainable environment that will
allow the pants to thrive and yield fruits and flowers.
The Qur’anic Garden aims to cultivate as many
types of each species as possible. Through their nursery,
they are working to identify which species could
survive in the region and which type needs a controlled
environment.
As part of the information collection, the Qur’anic
Garden Green Projects is collating plant information
including scientific name, biodiversity, habit, uses
among other significant details. They are also building
their nursery, herbarium library and a seed bank.
“We have almost covered each plant but the knowledge
never stops growing,” said Fatima. She added
that every now and then science comes up with new
knowledge and this gets added to their data making
the collection of information a perennial process.
The seeds are measured, labelled and stored in
refrigerators at a minus 20 degrees Celsius in order
to preserve them. “Three or five thousand years ago,
how did they preserve these (seeds)?” Fatima asked
rhetorically. “Allah mentioned in the Holy Quran that
when you keep the seed in its own fruit and use it ten
or hundred years later, it will be the same.”
A herbarium sheet is kept for each plant species
and type. It is labelled with the date when the sample
was collected, the scientific and vernacular names,
the area where it was collected and the persons who
collected and identified the sample. Fatima said collecting
a sample from the same plant after a year yields
a different set of information like collecting a sample
at the same time from a similar plant in another area
“because the environment affects the plants.”
Alongside collecting all these information, the
Qur’anic Garden Green Projects is also busy with different
activities spreading awareness not just about
the Qur’anic Garden but also about environment conservation
in general. They conduct seminars, organise
tree planting events and hold fairs and exhibitions in
Dried pumpkin: The seeds of this pumpkin will still grow even
Fatima referred to the fruits mentioned
in the Holy Quran as heavenly
fruits and a fruit meant for those going
to hell. The Qur’anic Garden, which she
described as a scientific as well as heritage
beneath mentioning these plants in
the Holy Quran – “to let us love being
good (and) to go for things in heaven and
be afraid of doing bad.”
She also said that conserving and appreciating
the environment is “a principle
mentioned in the Holy Quran.”
Once the Qur’anic Garden is ready,
it will be open to the public especially
Hope Rogue role will boost
empowerment: Newton
APTHANDIE Newton doesn’t shy
away from the idea that she
might be a role model. As she
takes on a leading television
role, she hopes to empower
women like the stars who have come
before her - Kerry Washington, Regina
King and Anika Noni Rose among them.
“They have empowered many,” said
Newton, a racially mixed actress who is
of British and Zimbabwean decent. “Empowerment
anywhere leads to empowerment
everywhere. The world is changing
at a pace where it needs to be. That’s
how I feel, and I’m proud to be a part of
this movement.”
The 40-year-old actress will star
in the dramatic series, Rogue, which
premieres on Wednesday night on
DirecTV’s in-house channel Audience
Network. It’ll be DirecTV’s first venture
into original programming, and the third
series to air on Audience along with Friday
Night Lights and Damages.
On the 10-episode Rogue, Newton
plays Grace Travis, an undercover detective
who takes on a gangster after her
son is killed in a drive by shooting.
“It’s the most time I’ve had to explore
a character. It was a luxury,” she said.
“I had a chance to explore the settled
details of what this person is going
through. That’s why TV is so great. You
get to see deeper than you would if it was
an hour and a half, although it felt like
we were making a 10-hour movie.”
Newton, who has starred in movies
such as Crash and The Pursuit of Happiness,
said the show’s creator Matthew
Parkhill told her before taping Rogue to
prepare herself mentally and physically
for the filming process.
“He said Crash was only six days for
you. This show will be Crash for four
months,” recalled Newton. “I’m very instinctive
when it comes to the emotional
stuff, but I knew I needed stamina.”
Newton wanted to get more into
character, learning the techniques of
Krav Maga - an Israeli tactical self-defense
method used in close combat. She
thought it would be better for her to
show that she can actually fight, rather
than tote around a gun.
“I wanted to train in the gritty streetlike
way,” she said. I was playing an
undercover detective, so I wanted to look
like I was well trained. I didn’t want to be
the character looking sexy with a gun.”
Newton said she was glad to show
that she’s more than a pretty face.
“For me, it has been a gradual evolution
of empowerment of women of
colour,” she said. “I’m a success already.
I’m happy to influence others along the
way. ... This is one life. If we’re able to
help others while on this journey, then
fantastic.”
While promoting the new sci-fi
“Who wouldn’t want to do something
it would be great. I was always hoping,
when I was a kid, that we would
Cruise believes aliens can exist.
In fact, some of his religious friends
do believe that an alien called Xenu
brought humans to Earth 75 million
years ago.
The actor said: “I don’t think you
can actually count it out. It might be
a little arrogant to think we were the
“I have waited for this day for
a long, long, long, long, long, long
it took this long. I know the people at
Pixar were busy creating Toy Story
16. But the time they took was worth
it. The script is fantastic. And it has
everything I loved about the first one:
It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny,
and the best part is - it’s got a lot
more Dory.”
The new film picks up about
a year after the action of Finding
According to Disney, the film will
I don’t have time to be
lonely: Prabhudheva
IANS
THE Indian entertainment industry’s
male dancing icon Prabhudheva turns
40 on Wednesday and says he has no
time to brood over his loneliness.
“Of course, I’d like someone in my
life. And of course, when I go home in the evening
I wish there was someone waiting for me. But very
honestly, I don’t have time to be lonely. My work
fills up most of my day and when I get home I just
want to sleep. As for company, I’ve some good
friends in Mumbai and Chennai,” he said.
For his birthday, Prabhudheva flew home to
Chennai to be with his two sons and very close
friends.
Said the choreographer-dancer-actor-director
emotionally, “These are friends with whom I go
back a long way, from outside and the film industry.
I haven’t met some of them for over a year
because of my hectic schedules. I’ve flown back
to Chennai to be with them on my birthday. No
party. Just a quiet get-together.”
Prabhudheva made his mark as an actor with
films like Kadhalan and Raasaiyya. Later, he
went behind the camera to direct hits like Pokkiri,
Wanted and Rowdy Rathore.
On turning 40, Prabhudheva quipped:”I’ve
heard life starts at 40. I wouldn’t know until I
get there... I suspect 40 would just be another
number. I have never allowed myself to stop and
consider my age. I’ve always been on the move.”
Looking back on the year that was, Prabhudheva
admitted it has been a whirligig of activities.
“Of course, I’d like
someone in my life.
And of course, when I
go home in the evening
I wish there was someone
waiting for me”
“I am wearing a number of hats and I’ve had
to move to Mumbai because of the workload in
the Hindi cinema. While I love dancing, and even
acting in ABCD - Anybody Can Dance was fun, I
remain at heart as choreographer,” he said. Everyone
in Mumbai wants a piece of Prabhudheva.
“I guess I am lucky. I’ve been working just as
hard from the time I started 25 years ago. So we
can’t say it’s hard work that has suddenly got me
Ameesha feels actors should
innovate to avoid stagnation
IANS
ACTRESS Ameesha Patel, who is
ready with her first production
Desi Magic, says change is important
for an actor or else they may
stagnate.
“Everyone goes through phases in life
and change is the only constant. If you
don’t change, if you don’t keep up with
times, if you don’t try and bring newness,
then you become stagnant, especially as
an actor,” the 37-year-old said on Tuesday
at a press conference held for Desi
Magic.
Ameesha’s production house is coowned
by her and Kuunal Goomer.
Desi Magic stars Zayed Khan and
Randhir Kapoor along with Ameesha,
who is a gold medallist in Economics
from the Tufts University in Medford,
Massachusetts.
Recalling the time she entered Bollywood
in 2000 with super duper hit Kaho
Naa... Pyaar Hai, Ameesha said people
often questioned her decision to enter
Bollywood.
“When I entered the industry, the one
question that everyone asked me was,
‘Ameesha you are so highly educated,
you are Rajni Patel’s granddaughter, why
would you be here?’ As if people who are
brainless are in this industry,” Ameesha
said and added that she has proved herself
as an actress too.
Last seen in Race 2, she will soon be
seen in Shortcut Romeo, Run Bhola Run
Akshay’s retro look in Action Replayy
was a mistake, says Vipul Shah
IANS
DIRECTOR-PRODUCER Vipul
Amrutlal Shah, whose London
Dreams and Action Replayy
bombed at the box office, accepts that
there were mistakes in the films. He feels
his decision to give a retro look to Akshay
Kumar in Action Replayy went against
the movie.
“When you make a film, you can’t
think or assure that it will be a hit. I am
lucky that out of my eight films six have
worked. If a film has not worked, then we
will have to accept our mistakes that we
have made in the films,” Shah said.
“As per my knowledge, in Action
Replayy, Akshay’s look was my fault.
Akshay had even said that this shouldn’t
be the look, but I was convinced with it. I
feel Action Replayy didn’t work because
of Akshay’s look,” he added.
Despite two big stars Akshay and
Aishwarya Rai in the cast, the 2010 film
failed to click at the box office.
“Now I feel had Akshay’s look been
better, the audience opinion about the
film would have changed. There were
some errors in the script, which I can see
now, but not then. There was lot of mistakes
in the film, which I can see now,”
said Shah.
The filmmaker, who churned out hits
like Namastey London and Waqt: The
Race Against Time with Akshay, shares
a strong bonding with the star, but at
the same time maintains a professional
equation with him.
“We can’t forget that he is a big star.
We should not forget our professional
relationship. He is an easy going person,
very cooperative. I maintain our professional
boundary. He is a very good
friend,” said Shah.
New exhibition highlights
artistry behind bowls
Bowls haven’t
changed in any
important way since
the Song dynasty.
In fact, they haven’t
changed much since
the Neolithic era,
between 4,000 and
10,000 years ago,
when people first
began making
receptacles by
hollowing out wood
and stone or
moulding and
baking clay
NYT SYNDICATE
LAST week, a media frenzy
erupted when a small white
ceramic bowl carved with a
pattern of lotus blossoms sold
for more than $2.2 million at
auction in New York. That price, which
included the buyer’s premium, was 10
times what the auction house, Sotheby’s,
expected the bowl to fetch, and more
than 700,000 times what the sellers had
paid for it.
The consignors, whom Sotheby’s
identified only as a family from New
York state, had bought the bowl for a
few dollars at a yard sale in 2007. It was
displayed in their living room until they
consulted Asian art experts and discovered
that it was a thousand-year-old
artifact from the Northern Song dynasty
in China, an exquisite specimen of pale,
thin-walled Ding pottery.
If it’s curious that this Chinese bowl
escaped notice for so long, it’s an equal
wonder that it finally came to light.
For all of the object’s obvious beauty,
nothing signalled its age or rarity to the
untutored eye.
Bowls haven’t changed in any important
way since the Song dynasty. In
fact, they haven’t changed much since
the Neolithic era, between 4,000 and
10,000 years ago, when people first
began making receptacles by hollowing
out wood and stone or moulding and
baking clay.
Before the bowl, cupped hands and
folded leaves brought water to the lips.
The new containers offered a place to
hold the materials of community and
ritual: food for sharing, incense for
burning, water for irrigation, wine for
sacrament, alms for the poor.
And yet, “we don’t talk about the
bowl because it’s completely this everyday
thing,” said Namita Gupta Wiggers,
director and chief curator of the Museum
of Contemporary Craft in Portland,
Oregon “We take it for granted. We
know it too well.”
That so vital an article is routinely
overlooked led Wiggers to organise an
exhibition devoted to it. Object Focus:
The Bowl opened this month, displaying
nearly 200 bowls, from a Tibetan
singing bowl to a chrome ice bucket. The
show, which is subtitled Reflect (PLUS)
Respond, will run through August 3. A
second part, Engage (PLUS) Use, which
involves artists’ performances, a bowl-

lending library, a symposium and a collaboration
with chefs, cookbook authors
and bakers in Portland, will be held from
May 16 through September 21.
Speaking by phone from Portland,
Wiggers said she was moved to think differently
about the bowl after reading The
Language of Things, a book by Deyan
Sudjic, who directs the Design Museum
in London. Sudjic wrote about the ways
designers have transformed ordinary
household objects into coded luxuries
meant to raise the owner’s status and
self-esteem. Such objects, as Wiggers interpreted
it, include the table, lamp and
chair. Consumers, she said, covet not
just tables, but Noguchi tables; not just
chairs, but Eames chairs; not just lamps,
but Ingo Maurer lamps.
The bowl does not perform the same
star turn in the object world, Wiggers
believes, and she attributes its background
role to its close connection with
craft. Many magnificent bowls have been
made by ceramic and glass artists working
outside of mass-market commerce,
detached from the publicity machinery
that promotes recognition and value.
She would like us to seek not just bowls,
but Marguerite Wildenhain bowls and
Lucie Rie bowls, to name just two esteemed
artisans. At the same time, she
would like us to respect the anonymous
vernacular bowl that descends from generations
of well-wrought tradition.
Another reason the bowl has been
overlooked, Wiggers posits, is because
it’s an accessory. Which is to say, it’s a
supporting player in the narrative of other
objects and their users. What else is
to be expected from something defined
largely by the void at its centre and its
ability to contain a near-infinite variety
of things?
“When I talk to people about the
bowl, it is always about something else,”
Wiggers said. “It’s a metaphorical conversation
about ritual, like in the tea ceremony,
or about the fabrication process.
It’s very hard to just talk about the bowl
itself. We talk around the bowl.”
Paradoxically, it’s the bowl’s lack of
presence that makes it such an excellent
metaphor and accounts for the many
memorable references to it in literature.
Sifting through the Western canon
alone, one quickly arrives at Micawber
and his punch bowl; Dalloway’s outre
friend Sally Seton floating the heads of
dahlias and hollyhocks in bowls of water;
stately, plump Buck Mulligan performing
a parody of the Roman Catholic mass
with a shaving bowl; and, of course, The
Golden Bowl of Henry James.
Tables, chairs and lamps can’t begin
to compete.
Wiggers has capitalised on the narrative
richness of bowls by inviting
scholars, writers and artisans to select
an example from the show and write a
brief essay about it. Some of the essays
are philosophical, like the meditation
by Mara Holt Skov, a curator in San
Francisco, on a glass bowl by Do-Ho
Suh modelled with the impression of
the South Korean artist’s cupped hands
pressed into the base. It is, Holt Skov
wrote, a “reminder that the hand is
present in everything we make,” even if
the evidence is not always obvious.
Daniel Duford, a potter and printmaker,
wrote more personally about a
ceramic bread bowl of unknown origin
that had been inherited from his wife’s
great-grandmother in Puyallup, Washington.
“It is thick and stout like a Dutch
farm wife. For all its stoutness, it has
a handsome figure, neither dumpy nor
high-toned.”
Wiggers has invited the public to
contribute writings as well, which are
collected online at objectfocusbowl.tumblr.com.
And she is encouraging people
to render their ideas about bowls at a
drawing station installed at the exhibition.
Undergraduates from the illustration
programme at Pacific Northwest
College of Art, the museum’s partner
institution, were the first contributors,
followed by anyone who has cared to
pick up a pencil.
Written or drawn, these interpretations
encourage us to look at bowls with
new eyes and find the poetry in their
banality. Bowls are the mother of design,
and their unique qualities may be stifled
by the comfort of their familiar forms.
Take the ancient Song dynasty bowl
that created such a stir: Tao Wang, an
archaeologist who heads the Chinese art
department at Sotheby’s, said that the
lotus pattern in the ivory bowl is probably
a Buddhist allusion, symbolising
rebirth and purity. This particular bowl
would have been used not for dining,
Wang noted, but for making an offering
to a temple. “It’s not a simple daily
object,” he said.
Which is not to denigrate the
everyday. “The simple bowl,” Wang
added, “is the great invention of the
human mind.”

New Toyota Avalon makes
an impression
For 2013, the Avalon
is no longer dreaming.
This fourth-generation
car has curves
and contours, not
to mention an expressive
new face.
With the scowl of a
grouper and a Snidely
Whiplash mustache,
the Avalon makes a
strong impression
NYT SYNDICATE
SINCE its introduction in 1995,
the Toyota Avalon has brought
to mind Walter Mitty, the
fictional character created by
James Thurber. Like Mitty,
the Avalon meekly floated through life,
taking a few insults here and there while
dreaming of doing great things. For the
Avalon, that meant becoming fun to
drive and genuinely luxurious—anything
other than being a dull ticket for largeappliance
buyers.
For 2013, the Avalon is no longer
dreaming. This fourth-generation car
has curves and contours, not to mention
an expressive new face. With the scowl
of a grouper and a Snidely Whiplash
mustache, the Avalon makes a strong
impression. The 268-hp V-6 adds a bit
of panache to the driving experience, yet
the unassuming Hybrid deserves some
credit for the looks. Design executive
Kevin Hunter says the upper grille would
have been slimmer if not for the need
to feed air to electric-drive components
in the Hybrid (V-6 and Hybrid models
share the same body).
The result of the ambitious design
treatment is not an immediately lovable
face, but we think familiarity will breed
tolerance—and maybe even likability.
Situated behind bulging covers is a
slenderised approach to dual headlamps,
which Toyota calls Quadrabeam in an
imitation of Detroit naming convention.
The arching roofline adds elegance,
although a penalty is the wicked reflection
of the rear package shelf, which the
driver can see in the rearview mirror.
This roofline disguises the trunk’s hugeness
(16.0 cubic feet in the V-6 models
and 14.0 cubic feet in the Hybrid), but
the roomy back seat is obvious from afar.
The Avalon’s new stance correctly
suggests handling prowess that was
previously lacking. It’s entertaining to
throw around this 16.3-foot-long car on a
mountain road; body roll is well controlled
despite a suspension that’s hardly
state-of-the-art. Losing 110 pounds has
clearly helped. Ride quality—another
eye-opener—is happily on the firm side.
Sitting in the driver’s seat of a Limited
model, looking at the three attractive
display screens and the tricolour dashboard
and holding the handsome steering
wheel, we found the word “Toyota”
falling from our consciousness.
Reality is kept in check by the window
sticker, which reveals that the Avalon
is an even better value equation than
before. For modest souls who don’t want
to spring for a Lexus, the Avalon offers
style and features that encroach on Lexus
territory. Yet with the conventional
powertrain, the XLE is priced at $31,785,
a decrease of $2170 from the 2012 base
model. The Avalon Hybrid starts in Premium
trim at $36,350 and ends with the
Limited at $42,195.
The Hybrid has a 2.5-litre four-cylinder
rated at 156 hp and an electric
motor capable of making 141 hp. They
are connected by a continuously variable
transmission, with peak combined output
reaching 200 hp. Whereas the V-6 is
muscular and produces a healthy exhaust
note, the Hybrid’s four-banger sounds
embarrassed and slightly distressed.
According to Toyota, the Hybrid goes
from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, or 1.5
seconds slower than the V-6. Although
the Hybrid’s electric-drive components
obtrude into the driving experience, they
are well-packaged within the car, minimising
space, weight, and price penalties.
Three push-button driving modes
are included with either powertrain.
The V-6 has Eco, Normal, and Sport.
Eco restricts the throttle and limits the
climate-control system, while Sport firms
up the steering, changes the shift points,
and matches revs on downshifts. The
Hybrid offers an EV mode that lets the
car go up to 20 mph on battery power for
a mile. Eco and Sport modes correspond
to those found with the V-6, but there are
no paddle shifters peeking at you from
behind the Hybrid’s steering wheel.
In the end, the Avalon does not alter
the large-car formula, but what it does
with its sometimes mundane pieces leads
to an impressive result. Much improved,
and with the desirability factor dialed up,
the Avalon is no longer a car to apologise
for. Finding itself in possession of
a new arsenal of features and qualities,
the Avalon is Walter Mitty living out a
dream.

A childhood favourite
grows up
NYT SYNDICATE
THE childhood pleasure of
tomato soup with a side
of grilled cheese had been
enshrined in my mind since
I’d last had it, decades ago.
A tart, bright tomato soup and a crispy
sandwich with an oozing interior: No
wonder they are an iconic match.
Recently I decided to stop mooning
over the memory and just make it. It was
time to reintroduce myself to its charms.
I dug up the soup recipe I remembered
from my grade-school years, a
simple brew of canned tomatoes, onion,
cream and chicken broth simmered until
thick. Then I fried buttered whole-wheat
bread with cheddar until the cheese
dripped.
With great anticipation, I dipped
the golden corners of the sandwich into
the bowl. But, alas, the treasured soup
was bland. And while I still enjoyed the
grilled cheese, it actually tasted a lot better
without the soggy dunk. So much for
nostalgia.
That’s when I remembered a recipe
I adore from The Silver Palate Good
Times Cookbook. That version, spiked
with fennel and Pernod, is livelier and
more sophisticated than your usual
tomato soup. It has a more complex
flavour, too, with the fennel bulb adding
a pronounced sweetness, along with a
very gentle licorice flavour brought out
by the Pernod.
I reworked the Silver Palate recipe
slightly, changing the proportions (the
original recipe called for two sticks of
butter, which I reduced) and adding a
little chili powder to the mix. To serve
alongside, I broiled several slim croutons
seasoned with fennel seeds and topped
with Brie (Camembert would work well,
too). I made sure the croutons were as
crisp as crackers so that they would not
instantly turn to mush when floated on
the soup.
The whole thing wasn’t any harder
to make or more time-consuming than
my grade-school soup and sandwich. But
it was a far more elegant dish, brightflavoured,
warming, fancy enough for
company but still fun to eat because of
the cheesy crouton boats bobbing on the
surface.
As a leftover, the soup was equally
good without the croutons. Though a
butter-soaked grilled cheese sandwich,
eaten alongside but not dipped, would
have been nice, too.
I dug up the soup
recipe I remembered
from my grade-school
years, a simple brew
of canned tomatoes,
onion, cream and
chicken broth
simmered until thick
Tomato-fennel soup with brie
toasts
Time: 90 minutes
Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients
7 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 medium fennel bulbs, cleaned and
thinly sliced, fronds chopped and
reserved
1 large onion, halved, peeled and thinly
sliced
2 teaspoons salt
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
3 tablespoons Pernod
2 28-ounce packages or cans chopped
tomatoes packed in puree
1 cup chicken stock
1 teaspoon black pepper
6 baguette slices, 1/2-inch thick1 teaspoon
fennel seeds
3 ounces Brie, thinly sliced
Method
1. Melt 6 tablespoons butter in a
large pot over medium heat. Add fennel,
onion and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Toss to
combine. Reduce heat to medium-low.
Partly cover and cook, stirring occasionally,
until vegetables are very tender,
about 20 minutes. Stir in garlic and chili
powder; cook 1 minute. Stir in Pernod
and cook until almost completely evaporated,
about 3 minutes.
2. Pour in tomatoes, 1 1/2 cups water
and the stock. Bring to a simmer and
cook gently, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
Season with 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and the
black pepper. Puree soup in batches using
a blender or immersion blender until
smooth.
3. Transfer soup back to pot over
medium heat; simmer until slightly
thickened, 5 to 10 minutes more. Scrape
down sides and bottom of pot occasionally.
Remove from heat and cover to
keep warm.
4. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spread
bread slices on a large baking sheet.
Bake until lightly golden, about 10
minutes.
5. Toast fennel seeds in a small skillet
over medium heat until fragrant and
lightly coloured, 2 to 3 minutes. Melt in
remaining 1 tablespoon butter.
6. Adjust oven temperature to broil
and position rack 6 inches from heat.
Brush toasts with fennel-seed butter and
top with Brie. Return to oven and broil
until bubbly and golden, 1 to 3 minutes.
(Check every minute or so to see that
they are not burning.) Ladle soup into
bowls and top with a cheese crouton.
Garnish with fennel fronds.
Good Times Cookbook, by Julee Rosso
The ill –starred seedling
It tries hard,
To come up in the lone,
But always that scorching ball shone
With its bolts of gold,
It makes even the bold,
To take cover,
All to have a shower,
There the loner lies limp,
Tossed about, breaking every limb.
If only there was a drop,
Falling down plop-plop,
He would try again.
But all in vain,
There is nobody to listen but a fiery ball,
Who pays no heed to no call,
Ah! That poor soul,
All his life is stole
Never did he want this hell!!
But the church’s tinkling bells.
With friends of all kind,
And people so mild,
Be so near to heaven
And feeling like the lord’s shadow,
It must have been fun.
But now it was like sitting on the edge of a
loaded gun,
With no friends kind,
And no people mild,
Only he alone,
Left to die alone.
Movie review
The Place Beyond The Pines
THE highly anticipated new drama from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) powerfully explores the consequences
of motorcycle rider Luke’s (Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling) fateful decision to commit a crime to
support his child. The incident renders him targeted by policeman Avery (Golden Globe Award nominee Bradley
Cooper), and the two men become locked on a tense collision course which will have a devastating impact on both
of their families in the years following.
Ambitious to a fault, The Place Beyond the Pines finds writer/director Derek Cianfrance reaching for — and often
grasping — thorny themes of family, fatherhood, and fate.
