ELEGANT robes and abaya-inspired
dresses adorned with 24-karat gold and
pure silver and an array of exclusive
bridal gown designs were put on display
at the Italian Wedding Dream event
which opened at the Maserati Showroom
in the Pearl Qatar on Friday.
The bridal expo, organised by the Italian
Business Council of Qatar (IBCQ) in partnership
with Al Fardan Sport Motors
Company-Maserati, featured six Italian
companies in the fashion sector. The highlight
includes creations by renowned
haute couture designer Lorenzo Riva.
Italian Ambassador to Qatar HE
Andrea Ferrari and fashion enthusiasts
graced the occasion.
According to IBCQ Chairwoman Palma
Libotte, the event is a celebration of Italian
craftsmanship demonstrated in tailor-made
wedding dresses and evening gowns.
She said, “There is great potential for Italian
products in the wedding sector in Qatar,
which is focusing on high-end markets.
Exclusive companies making customised
designer wears are competing hard for
space. The consumer’s taste for clothes in
Qatar has rapidly adapted to quality and
style, which are becoming a must and it is
great timing for ‘made in Italy’. Italian made
dresses are now considered to be an affordable
luxury. A grand fashion show featuring
more exciting creations of Lorenzo
Among the showcased creations that
caught the fancy of the guests were the
creations of Sandra Scaroni and Patrizia
Russo. Their brand, Oro e Seta, created a
buzz during last year’s I-WED event
because of the unique materials used for
the dresses. Besides handcrafted designs,
the duo only uses contrasting materials
like gold, silver, pure silk and Murano
glass. Their dresses even come with a
code and certification that proves the
authenticity of the gold and silver adorning
the garbs.
“The Qatari market has shown an interest
in our creation when we first showcased
our collection in Doha last year. It is
good to be back to this country to showcase
once again what we can offer. The
uniqueness of our dresses conveys the
message of cultural aggregation or meeting
of the East and West which is realised
through the details of our designer
wears,” said Sandra.
Scaroni further said the prices of their
dresses depend on the craftsmanship of
each piece and may start from 5,000
euro. “All the details have been handcrafted.
This wedding dress took as about
seven months to finish,” she added.
Alessia Bighi of Atelier Armonie, another
featured Italian company at the exhibition,
said their long years of experience in the
fashion industry is among their strengths
as a newcomer in the lucrative Qatari wedding
market. She said, “This is the first
time we brought our creations in Qatar. We
believe that our designs have a great potential
in this market. We hope to have a small
corner in one of the shops so that we can
test the strength of our products.”
Alessia said the price of their dresses
ranges from 2,000 euro to 3,000 euro.
Other Italian companies which participated
in the exclusive show included
Alida Giordani wedding gowns and
evening robes, Il Giardino dei Principe,
women’s shoes and accessories and
Gruppo Quattro evening dresses, bags
and shoes.
QFCA to
host fifth
investment
forum in Oct
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
THE Qatar Financial Centre Authority
(QFCA) would host the fifth MENA
Investment Management Forum in
Doha from October 2 and October 6.
Formerly known as FundForum
Middle East, this is the first time the
flagship conference will be held in the
country. It will offer Qatari financial
service companies the opportunity to
interact with their peers from across
the region, to discuss the trends,
opportunities and challenges facing
the industry. The forum will be officially
opened by the Minister of
Economy and Finance HE Yousef
Hussain Kamal.
The ICBI launched the FundForum
Middle East in 2007 as a regional
partner to the FundForum
International conference, which has
been running for two decades. Over
the last four years, the summit and
convention has attracted leading
financial and investment experts from
firms operating across the GCC. It is a
premier event for the asset management
industry.
Acting CEO of the QFC Authority
Shashank Srivastava said, “The MENA
Investment Management Forum moving
to Doha is further recognition that
Qatar is becoming the regional centre
for the asset management industry.
Supported by one of the fastest growing
economies in the world, high levels of
institutional and retail wealth, the
country is able to provide investment
managers emerging market returns at
developed market risk levels.”
When the first FundForum Middle
East was held in 2007, regional onshore
assets under management were estimated
at $57billion with much of the management
undertaken by international
companies.
With the repatriation of funds and the
growth in the regional investment management
providers, assets under management
are expected to be over $100
billion by 2012 (Cerulli Associates). ICBI
has recognised that Qatar with its world
class financial infrastructure is at the
centre of this growth, which was a key
driver for moving the forum to Doha.
“The recent Global Financial
Centres Index, produced by the Z/Yen
Group, shows that Qatar continues to
increase its ranking as a financial centre
at a time when other regional markets
have declined. Asset managers
are looking to do business across the
region, and the Middle East
Investment Management Forum in
Qatar will provide a great platform for
them to grow their business,”
Srivastava said.
ANTI-SMOKING Society
Qatar, a voluntary organisation
working in the fields of
education and awareness, has
urged the governments to
enforce World Health
Organisation’s (WHO) antitobacco
treaty.
Addressing a press conference
held on the occasion of
World No Tobacco Day, the
society officials said, “We are
concerned about spreading
the message of World No
Tobacco Day to every nook
and cranny of the country
because tobacco consumption
has become a serious
socio-economic and health
issue for all. As smoking
endangers not only the smokers,
non-smokers have to be
vigilant and alert.
“The Anti-Smoking Society
has been working on the
awareness campaigns for the
past ten years and it has been
a rewarding experience. We
are concentrating on students,
families and labour
camps. Motivation, education
and support are the key areas
of our work.
“Motivate smokers to quit,
non-smokers to join the fight,
educate all about the evils of
smoking and help smokers to
quit the bad habit by way of
counselling and treatment.
We will be conducting a number
of events, including
round-table talks, seminars
and talk shows to create
awareness in the society,”
said chairman of the society
MP Hassan Kunhi.
President of the society, Dr
Abdul Rasheed said that the
World Health Organisation
(WHO) has selected “The
WHO
Framework
Convention on Tobacco
Control (WHO FCTC) as the
theme for the World No
Tobacco Day 2011. This is to
draw the attention of all governments
to execute the antitobacco
treaty signed by them
in 2005.
The WHO Framework
Convention on Tobacco
Control is the first international
treaty negotiated under
the auspices of WHO. It was
adopted by the World Health
Assembly on May 21, 2003
and entered into force on
February 27, 2005. It has
since become one of the most
rapidly and widely embraced
treaties in the history of the
United Nations.
The Convention represents
a milestone for the promotion
of public health and provides
new legal dimensions for
international health cooperation.
In this respect, this
year’s message is more meaningful
not only to the government
authorities but also to
the public.
The WHO FCTC was developed
in response to the globalisation
of the tobacco epidemic
and is an evidencebased
treaty that reaffirms
the right of all people to high
standard of health.
“Our experience shows that
combined efforts can produce
wonderful result in curbing
the evil habit of smoking in
the society. Cigarette is one of
the most addictive and
destructive over-the-counter
drugs known to modern man.
One of the few legal substances
available in stores
that can injure or kill when
used as intended. Most people
know this as a fact, yet
many continue to smoke,” Dr
Abdul Rasheed said.
Amanulla Vadakkangara,
In view of the forthcoming
industrial growth as well as
the high demand for automation
among others.
It also works as a forum to
bridge the technical gap
between the industry and the
DPS-MODERN Indian
School senior students and
teachers got tips on effective
communication, leadership
and teaching at a workshop
organised by the the school
recently.
The workshop was conducted
by Dr Razeena
Padmam, a professor and
director of School of
Behavioural Sciences at MG
University, Kottayam, India.
“A teacher has
many roles to play
in the life of the
students and
needs to focus on
his or her potentials
as well as
conceptual,
teaching and
personal skills.
It was aimed at equipping
both the teacher and students
with needed communication
skills.
Dr Padmam, a recipient of
national award for academic
excellence, said teaching is
an activity designed and performed
for changes in pupil’s
behaviour.
She said effective learning
would result producing good
leaders for society.
“A teacher has many roles
to play in the life of the students
and needs to focus on
his or her potentials as well
as conceptual, teaching and
personal skills. He must
ensure confidentiality and do
his utmost to reduce conflict.
Be a good friend and be generous
in giving strokes and
rewards to the students whenever
required,” she said.
She urged the teachers to
exercise extra care in dealing
with their students.
“One must do away with
punishment. Teen-aged students
must be handled with
understanding, love and
unconditional regards. They
should be helped to identify
stress and taught ways to
cope with it. Effective learning
and teaching will ultimately
pave the way for right
decision -making skill,
inspire and generate solutions
for difficult problems,”
Dr Razeena advised.
DOHA
QATAR Academy organised
an exhibition for Class V students
recently. The eight-week
exhibition was themed on
‘Sharing the Planet’ and
emphasised on its main concept
of the ‘difference between
wants and needs lead to
responsible sharing of earth’s
resources’.
Speaking on the occasion,
Qatar Academy Director Dr
Greg Hedger said, “When you
take time to learn about something
and put that knowledge
into practice, it actually becomes
a powerful experience.”
On his part, Paul Rimmer,
the school’s Primary Years’
Programme (PYP) coordinator,
said, “This year the focus is
about looking at what people
want, what people need and
the possible impact of those
wants and needs on the earth’s
resources. We need to have an
understanding of our wants
Qatar Academy students take part in the exhibition, in Doha, recently.
and needs in order to share the
earth’s resources responsibly.”
Altogether 30 projects were
put together by the students
working in groups and guided
by their assigned mentors.
Rimmer said, “The exhibition
provided the students with an
important theme, but the students
were allowed to decide
on their line of research.”
The result was a varied array
of projects with a number of
groups focusing on environment
and scientific topics such
as mining, water and air pollution
and communication
devices. “The theme of
‘Sharing the Planet’ and the
PYP is co-related and transdisciplinary,”
Rimmer said.
“There’s a lot of data collection
in terms of surveys and interviews
in the students’ research
which brings in mathematics
and data handling. The students
also used technology to
showcase their research and
ideas. This allows them to further
develop their skills in
communication and time
management. It’s a rich and
encompassing experience.”
Rimmer said that action can
be in the form of something
simple like sharing a book
within the group in order to
facilitate their research or
something bigger like a particular
group who came up with a
system of using reusable plastic
boxes in place of disposable
containers in the cafeteria, the
telecommunications group
whose old mobile phone drive
will help raise money for a
healthcare facility in New
Zealand and the group who
held a blood donation drive for
hospitals in Qatar.
