Scholars to be held in Dakar, 

Senegal, on Monday. The threeday 

conference aims to highlight 

the status of scholars and their 

contribution to uniting the Muslim 

Ummah, addressing its major 

problems and countering attempts 

to disrupt its religious, intellectual, 

political and social stability. The 

conference will seek to underline 

the need for devoting attention to 

authentic knowledge, learning, 

encouraging cooperation among 

scholars and prompting the 

Muslim Ummah to draw lessons

Qatar’s commitment to health 

services commendable 

QATAR’S commitment to health 

and educational improvement has 

helped it advance to the forefront 

among distinct countries in the 

World Health Organisation members, 

said Dr Suzan Farhood, who 

is in charge of Qatar affairs at the

Mediterranean of WHO. He commended

THE Doha Bank, in partnership 

with Lulu Hypermarket Group, one 

of the leading hypermarket and 

department store chains in the GCC 

region, jointly launched a credit 

card titled ‘Lulu Doha Bank Credit 

Card’ on Sunday. 

The new value-packed credit card 

is a first for Qatar and marks the latest 

innovative payment solution 

from Doha Bank. 

Unveiling the innovative payment 

solution, Doha Bank CEO R 

Seetharaman handed over the card 

to Managing Director of Lulu Group 

MA Yusuffali. 

Speaking on the occasion, 

Yusuffali said Lulu has always 

adopted technological innovations 

in business which is favourable for 

its valued customers. “The booming 

economy of Qatar is providing a lot 

of opportunities for investors. We 

look forward to face the future with 

this rewarding partnership both for 

our entities and our mutual customers. 

The new credit card 

launched in association with Doha 

Bank and MasterCard will give 

additional purchasing power to customers 

with benefits,” Yusuffali 

said. 

Yusuffali said Lulu has more 

investment plans in Qatar. “A fifth 

Lulu outlet will open at Al Khor 

shortly,” he said. 

The new Lulu Doha Bank- 

MasterCard rewards shoppers with 

a five percent savings on all purchases 

made at Lulu stores and one 

percent savings elsewhere. These 

savings are earned by way of shopping 

points. Customers earn one 

point for every QR1 spent on all 

transactions made at Lulu outlets in 

Qatar and one point for every QR5 

spent for all other transactions, purchases 

and cash withdrawals elsewhere. 

All points earned can be 

redeemed at Lulu stores in Qatar to 

enjoy free shopping for groceries, 

electronics, home appliances, cosmetics, 

clothing or any other item 

from the hypermarket. This is 

undoubtedly the most rewarding 

shopping credit card in town. 

Purchases at Lulu will enable customers 

to enjoy a five percent savings 

on their weekly shopping bill. 

In addition, the card holders can get 

credit equivalent to double their 

salary for 55 days without interest. 

This amount will be different from 

customers’ liability to Doha Bank. 

Lulu has also made an an introductory 

offer of 10 percent discount 

for all the card holders for the first 

three months. 

In addition to online access to the 

card account, worldwide acceptance 

and a variety of insurance coverage, 

the card makes it much easier to 

travel in style. The new initiative

QR100mn fund 

to support small, 

medium projects

QATAR Charity and Social 

Development Centre (SDC), 

part of Qatar Foundation, 

launched a QR100mn fund 

on Sunday to support small 

entrepreneurial projects in 

Qatar and beyond. 

The initiative, titled Al 

Asmakh Finance Initiative 

Fund, will be financed 

by businessman 

Ibrahim Hasan al Asmakh. 

A joint cooperation 

agreement was signed 

between the three parties 

responsible for financing 

and implementing the fund. 

The agreement was signed 

by Jumaá Ali al 

Mohanadi, a member of 

Qatar Charity’s general 

assembly, Hasan Ibrahim 

al Asmakh representing 

his father Ibrahim Hasan 

al Asmakh, and Executive 

Director of the SDC 

Amaal al Mannai. 

The signing of the deal 

marks the beginning of 

the first phase of the 

fund which will be implemented 

with a QR10mn 

budget. 

Addressing a press conference, 

al Asmakh said the 

initiative will be implemented 

in six countries. 

“Our aim is to help build 

the country stronger. The 

initiative will contribute to 

the welfare of the country’s 

economy and will increase 

opportunities for financing 

small businesses. This is 

the first phase of the funding 

initiative, which will be 

carried out in six other 

countries. There will be 

similar projects in Egypt 

and Sudan soon,” al 

Asmakh added. 

Al Mohanadi highlighted 

Qatar Charity’s constructive 

role in the initiative. 

He said, “The fund 

will support small entrepreneurial 

projects in the 

country. Qatar Charity will 

function as the financial 

arm for loan provision and 

installment. It will supervise 

and monitor the different 

funding procedures. 

Qatar Charity will 

make available technical 

and administrative skills, 

and the expertise required 

for such projects.” 

Al Mannai said the fund 

will open the door for nontraditional 

projects, like 

industrial and technological 

projects. “This initiative 

holds a lot of promise for 

Qataris. We hope it would 

lead to funding bigger projects,” 

she said.

First Filipino-Muslim school opens in Qatar

THE Asian Integrated 

School (AIS), Qatar’s third 

Filipino school, was officially 

opened on Sunday. The 

3,916-sqm school facility 

with around 300 enrolled 

students is located at Ibn 

Nubata Street in Al Messila. 

The classes are likely to 

commence from June 13. 

The school was inaugurated 

by its sponsors Sheikh 

Abdulla Khalifa al Thani 

and Sheikh Abdul Aziz 

Khalifa al Thani in the presence 

of the Philippine 

Ambassador to Qatar HE 

Crescente Relacion. 

The AIS is the country’s 

first Filipino-Muslim school 

and is the first of its kind in 

the Middle East. 

Addressing the gathering, 

the envoy said the new school 

would not only offer quality 

education for Filipino 

students but also to the 

Qatari and other expatriates 

in the country. 

“The Qatari leadership has 

always supported education 

and the need for education 

as a fundamental right to 

shape the country’s identity, 

as outlined in its strategic 

vision 2030. This commitment 

is exemplified by the 

country in extending free 

education to all its citizens,”

Qatar (DMOQ). It 

was first conceptualised by 

the Filipino-Muslim community 

in Qatar in 2006. 

The AIS campus houses 

four school buildings. 

Among its facilities include 

13 rooms for the classes, laboratories 

and other offices 

like science laboratory, computer 

laboratory, industrial 

arts room, library, clinic, 

cafeteria and a prayer hall. 

The school will follow the 

curriculum of the 

Department of Education in 

the Philippines, integrated 

with Arabic and Islamic 

Studies. Qatari history will 

also be taught, as per the 

requirements of the 

Supreme Education Council. 

The AIS Founder Haji 

Amir Hawari and the AIS 

Board of Directors Chairman 

Faisal Jalani were also 

present at the occasion.

MoI inaugurates civil defence 

centre near Education City

THE General Directorate of 

Civil Defence (GDCD) of the 

Ministry of Interior (MoI) 

inaugurated the civil defence 

centre near Education City to 

serve Qatar Foundation and 

its adjoining areas, on 

Sunday. 

Speaking at a press conference 

after the inauguration, 

GDCD Director Brigadier 

General 

Abdullah 

Mohammad al Sowaidi said 

that the centre would cover 

Education City and neighbouring 

districts such as Al 

Aziziyya and Al Rayan. 

“It is equipped with fire 

vehicles, telephone links, 

operation room, special facilities 

and other highly sophisticated 

equipment for restoration 

work and rescue,” al 

Sowaidi said.

The centre comprises a

Filipinos to celebrate 113th I-Day on Friday

renovated Mesaimeer Street 

for commuters. The 1.5 km 

long street stretching from

Customers utilised the 

offer to make a record number

in May, Qtel said in a statement

THE Japan embassy and the 

Japanese Language Teachers’ 

Association in Qatar (JAL- 

TAQ), in cooperation with the 

Japan School of Doha, organised 

the third Japanese language 

speech contest for people 

studying the language on 

Saturday. 

Ambassador of Japan to 

Qatar HE Kenjiro Monji 

expressed gratitude for the 

support provided by the government 

and people of Qatar 

to his country that was 

severely hit by earthquake 

and tsunami in March. 

“I am confident that Japan 

would overcome this tragedy 

with the help of the international 

community. Our relations 

with Qatar will become 

stronger in future,” he said. 

The ambassador hoped that 

more and more Qataris would 

learn Japanese language and 

visit Japan. He said the 

speech contest would contribute 

to achieving the objective. 

Twenty one speakers studying 

the Japanese language 

participated in the speech 

contest which was programmed 

in three sections: 

recitation, assigned topic 

speech and free topic speech.

about his experience and life 

in Japan and encouraged the 

language learners to study in 

Japan through the scholarship

on the scholarship programmes.

Japanese government scholarship

June 9. It is open to Qatari

EIGHTY six Qatar-based 

authors have been included in 

the world’s largest anthology 

about fathers that has ever 

been published. 

The book titled My Father 

was published by My Father 

initiative, a non-profit project 

that was commissioned in 

2010 to conduct a series of 

programmes and events to 

celebrate the role of fathers in 

the lives of their children 

across the world. Though 

based out of Qatar, the project 

also saw active participation 

from people in various 

parts of the world, who joined 

hands to pay the world’s 

greatest tribute to fathers. 

The project led to various 

activities that enkindle the 

father-child relationship, and 

included a creative writing 

workshop, in partnership 

with Bloomsbury Qatar 

Foundation, a creative writing 

contest for all schools and 

colleges in Qatar, a photography 

contest, an Arabic debate 

and the publishing of My 

Father, co-authored by 102 

people from across the world 

who wrote true stories about 

their fathers. 

There were 86 stories from 

Qatar-based authors, including 

four stories by children 

with special needs from the 

Learning Center, and four 

stories from the Gaza strip 

from Palestinian children facing 

war and oppression on a 

daily basis, collected in partnership 

with the Al Fakhoora 

Project. 

The winners of the various 

contests held as part of the 

initiative were announced 

recently. 

In the creative writing contest 

for schools in Qatar, 

Rami Chahine of Qatar 

International School won the 

first prize, with Hanan Said of 

the Cambridge International 

Cover of My Father 

School for Girls coming second. 

For the contest among 

college students, both prizes 

went to students from the 

Weill Cornell Medical College 

Qatar (WCMC-Q) with Aicha 

Mahfoudhi taking the first 

prize and Shajeedha 

Ameerudeen the second. 

Stories sent in by these students 

about their fathers have 

also found a place in the book. 

In the photography contest 

which was also held on the 

theme of ‘father-child relationship’, 

Johnny HP was 

declared the winner, with 

Manoj Neelakandhan coming 

second. 

The grand finale of the project 

is scheduled to be held in 

the third week of June when 

all the Qatar-based authors 

will receive copies of their 

books and sign books, making 

it the largest such book signing 

anywhere in the world. 

The programme will also see 

prizes being distributed to 

winners of the creative writing 

contest and the photography 

contest. 

The book, My Father, is 

available for purchase online

book is being promoted as a 

perfect Father’s Day gift. 

Father’s day falls on June 10. 

All proceeds from the sale 

of the book will be given to

started conducting the AMIE 

(associate membership) 

examinations for persons 

holding engineering diploma 

or senior school certificate in 

science stream. 

The exams began on

Cultural Centre. It will conclude 

on June 10. 

Seventy-six candidates have 

been registered for the examinations, 

being conducted in 

accordance with the policy 

and procedure laid down by

Islamic Art (MIA) Park, a new cultural 

destination on the Corniche, 

for public on December 16. 

Located on the premises of the 

world-renowned Museum of 

Islamic Art, the nearly 280,000- 

sqm, crescent-shaped park is 

designed by Pei Partnership 

Architects of New York. It will feature 

a vertical steel sculpture by 

internationally acclaimed American 

artist Richard Serra. 

The yet-to-be-titled sculpture is 

Serra’s first public artwork in the

The nearly 280,000-sqm 

crescent-shaped park 

will feature a vertical 

steel sculpture by 

Richard Serra. 

Richard Serra said, “I hope that 

the sculpture will provide both a 

public place and a private space for 

people to gather and experience the 

narrow, vertical, open column in 

relation to themselves, the Museum 

of Islamic Art, the city of Doha, the 

surrounding sea and the sky, as 

seen through the opening at the top 

of the sculpture.” 

The MIA Park will include five 

kilometers of lighted pedestrian 

pathways shaded by native palm 

trees. Visitors will also find paddle 

boats for rent in a small cove in 

Doha Bay, as well as a café and 

kiosks offering refreshments. Yearround 

public activities at the park 

will include film screenings, sports 

events, storytelling programmes 

and art workshops. The MIA Park 

will be developed in phases, with 

additional elements and amenities 

to be announced in the future. 

Msheireb launches 

green programme 

for schools 


DOHA 

MSHEIREB Properties, formerly 

known as Dohaland, 

has announced the launch of 

its corporate social responsibility 

initiative ‘Green Programme 

for Schools (GPS)’. 

Msheireb Properties, a subsidiary 

of Qatar Foundation, 

will be inviting representatives 

of local and international 

schools to be initiated into 

the project. 

The GPS will be the largest 

and most engaging school 

programme in Qatar. It aims 

to reach, inspire and reward 

students and schools based on 

their eco-conscious activities. 

The programme seeks to engage 

the youth in eco-friendly practices 

and help build a green 

mindset at an early age. Strategically 

placed pledge boards, 

suggestion boxes and creative 

stickers placed inside schools 

would constantly remind and 

encourage the students to 

utilise resources carefully. 

“This initiative is a tangible 

representation of our sustainability 

based approach at 

Msheireb Properties and our 

commitment to act responsibly 

and sensitively to local cultures, 

heritage and the environment 

in which our communities 

are situated. Our Msheireb 

project, which is the world’s 

first sustainable downtown 

regeneration project, is a direct 

manifestation of this new thinking. 

We believe that the Green 

Programme for Schools will 

be a great outreach platform to 

engage future generations in 

reducing the carbon footprint 

and to use resources wisely,”

As part of the programme, 

each school will be required to 

create a GPS team comprising 

faculty, students and parents; 

a student and faculty member 

will be further nominated as a 

GPS ambassador. For a year, 

these schools will be carefully 

monitored by GPS involving 

officials from Qatar Green 

Building Council, Msheireb 

Properties and other technical 

members. The school, which 

reduces water and electricity 

consumption the most would 

be awarded the ‘Eco School of 

the Year’. Other prizes like the 

Best Eco-Idea and the Most 

Energy Efficient School will 

also be given. 

The entire programme will 

be operated by Msheireb 

Properties and Oryx 

Advertising Company (OAC).

engage the students and
