Emir issues decree to ratify 

Qatar-Singapore MoU 

THE Emir His Highness Sheikh 

Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani on 

Thursday issued decree no 5 of 

2013 ratifying a memorandum of 

understanding ((MoU) on environmental 

cooperation between 

Qatar and Singapore, which was 

signed in Doha on March 13, 

2012. The MoU shall have the 

power of law according to Article 

68 of the Constitution. The 

Decree will be effective from its 

date of issue and will be published 

in the official gazette. (QNA)

THE Emir His Highness Sheikh

Thursday issued Emiri Decree No 

1 of 2013 appointing the board of

Qatar, Egypt explore new 

avenues of investment

QATARI and Egyptian entrepreneurs 

met in Doha on Thursday to 

explore investment opportunities in 

both countries at a joint business 

forum organised by the Chamber of 

Commerce. 

The forum brought together 

businessmen from the two countries 

to address the obstacles facing 

the investors. The event was 

the first Egyptian-Qatari Business 

Council meet held in Doha. 

Chairman of Qatar Chamber HE 

Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassem al Thani 

also attended the event. 

In his opening remarks, Nasser 

Ahmed al Meer, board member of 

Qatar Chamber, assured the participants 

that Qatar would assist Egypt 

to make its economy flourish again 

“I would like to send a message on 

this occasion to Egyptian businessmen 

and Qatari investors that 

Egypt’s economy will recover and 

will flourish once again. We have 

faith in our Egyptian brothers and in 

their work. We hope that this forum 

will result in successful investments 

in both countries,” he said. 

Nasser also stressed the need for 

Egyptian businesses to invest in 

Qatar 

“Qatar has great potential and 

offers promising investments possibilities.

with a long history of accomplishments

However, we want to assure Qatari 

investors that their investments are 

risk-free. Therefore, the Egyptian 

prime minister has enacted clear 

and explicit investor protection 

laws,” he explained.

the forum for giving Egyptian businessmen 

the opportunity to provide 

specific information on existing and 

future projects for interested 

investors. 

“There are about 70 Egyptian 

businessmen from different sectors,

who have come here to showcase 

the investment opportunities in 

Egypt. This forum is a positive step 

towards helping Egyptian economy, 

which has been suffering for the 

past couple years. We truly hope

‘Artists as cultural ambassadors can bridge gaps’

ARTISTS around the world 

have been urged to become 

global cultural ambassadors 

and serve as bridges among 

civilisations. 

The call was made by three 

international artists during a 

panel discussion titled, ‘Don’t 

label me’ at the Arab Museum 

of Modern Art (Mathaf) on 

Wednesday. 

The trio, Egyptian painter 

Bassem Yousri, Russian photographer 

Xenia Nikolskaya 

and Doha-based Sudanese 

cartoonist Khalid Albaih 

urged artists not to allow their 

nationality and ethnicity limit 

them from exploring other 

cultures in their works. 

Albaih, who worked on 

political cartoons from 

Middle East and Sudan, was a 

guest artist in Qatar. 

Both Yousri and 

Nikolskaya’s works are currently 

on display at the exhibition 

titled ‘Tea with 

Nefertiti’ at the Museum. 

With Egypt as a case-inpoint, 

the expo features works 

that question some cultural 

practices. 

Yousri has a special collection 

of figurines made of clay 

while Nikolskaya showcases a 

selection of photographs of 

abandoned houses in different 

cities across Egypt. 

Nikolskaya’s works on display 

are from a collection 

called ‘Dust’, a project she 

worked on for six years. 

The discussion 

was aimed at 

presenting a programme 

that is 

both appealing 

and educative 

to the public. 

Speaking at the event, 

Yousri, who has lived in the 

United States for five years, 

said that it might be easy for 

people to label others and 

give wrong description about 

their culture. Giving an example, 

he said that his teacher 

saw his art work and reiterated 

that he (teacher) could not 

imagine where Yousri came 

from. 

“While making art, I don’t 

think of my culture or religion. 

I think of a universal 

way of addressing audience. I 

also like creating a piece that 

will bring revolution. There is 

always something to talk 

about from different parts of 

the world,” he said. 

On her part, Nikolskaya 

said, “The buildings in the 

‘Dust’ were neglected. They 

were untouched for a certain 

period of time. Photography 

is all about collection and 

recognition.” 

Albaih said: “People try to

bring change with what they 

can do. I believe I am bringing

He said the programme 

was a good opportunity for 

them to learn from each 

other’s experiences. 

Talking to Qatar Tribune, 

Coordinator of Adult and 

Academic Programmes at 

Mathaf Grace Murray said 

Yousri and Nikolskaya were 

exhibiting in Qatar for the 

first time. 

“We wanted to bring an 

interesting discussion about 

Egypt to coincide with the 

exhibition. This discussion 

was aimed at presenting a 

programme that is both 

appealing and educative to 

the public,” she said.

Most Qatar residents go to 

China for liver transplants

MAJORITY of Qatar residents, 

who undergo liver 

transplants outside the country, 

go to China, a study has 

revealed. 

In his presentation titled 

‘Clinical Outcome of Qatar 

Residents Undergoing Liver 

Transplantation Abroad’, 

which was delivered on the 

opening of the 5th Pan Arab 

Liver Transplant Society 

Congress in Doha on 

Thursday, Dr Rafie Yakoob, 

consultant edoscopist and 

transplant hepatologist at 

Hamad Medical Corporation 

(HMC), said that out of the 

83 Qatar residents who 

underwent liver transplantation 

outside Qatar between 

October 1988 and October 

2012, 60 (72 percent) visited 

China for treatment, while 

the remaining 23 (28 percent) 

were divided among 

Egypt, USA, Vienna and 

India. 

He also said that 70 

patients (84.3 percent) 

underwent deceased donor 

liver transplant and the 

remaining 13 patients (15.6 

percent) underwent living 

related liver transplant. 

Among the recipients, 49 

(60 percent) were males and 

34 (40 percent) were females. 

The median age of the 

patients was 56 years (range 

18-75 years). Hepatitis C virus 

(HCV) cirrhosis was the main 

cause for liver transplant in 

56 patients (67.5%). 

Out of the 83 patients, 66 

(80 percent) survived after a

median follow up of four years 

(range 1-23 years). Deaths 

were due to sepsis in seven 

patients, recurrent hepatocellular 

carcinoma in six patients, 

recurrent HCV cirrhosis in 

three patients, and uncontrolled 

upper gastrointestinal 

bleeding in one patient. 

Yakoob concluded that the 

residents who underwent 

liver transplant abroad 

showed good long-term outcome. 

According to Dr 

Muneera al Mohannadi from 

Qatar Organ Transplant 

Centre, the estimated incidence 

of Hepatitis C virus in 

Qatar is as high as 6.3 percent 

and that of Hepatitis B virus 

around 4.7 percent. 

He also said, “Until recently, 

patients suffering from last 

stage liver failure had to seek 

liver transplantation abroad 

which entails much agony 

and suffering integral to their 

treatment journey. Since the 

opening of the liver transplant 

programme at the HMC 

in 2011, liver transplantation 

can now be performed successfully 

in the country without 

outside assistance. 

However, severe organ shortage 

remains the biggest hurdle 

facing the programme and 

efforts now needs to be 

directed to improve the number 

and quality of available 

deceased donors in Qatar. 

Until then, perhaps living 

donor liver transplant may be 

the only way forward to help 

the patients on the waiting list 

and to prevent needless 

deaths”. 

Dr Riadh Fadhil, senior 

consultant and transplant 

surgeon at the HMC, also 

said, “The rate of organ donation 

in Qatar is increasing 

and the number of people 

going abroad for the transplants 

is going down. But we 

need to further raise the 

awareness of the public on 

the importance of organ 

donation to develop a sustainable 

organ transplant 

programme in Qatar”. 

Around 80 international 

experts in the field of liver 

transplant, in addition to over 

300 participants are attending 

the two-day meet which is 

organised by the HMC in collaboration 

with the Pan Arab 

Liver Transplant Society, The 

Transplantation Society, and 

the International Liver 

Transplantation Society.

participate in the National 

Sports Day event to be held 

on Karwa City premises on 

February 12. 

Mowasalat has planned 

several activities emphasising 

the importance of sports in

up by the Mowasalat include 

a three-kilometre marathon,

walkathon, a relay and a

QR180mn education park 

set to open next year

QATAR Electricity and 

Water Corporation 

(Kahramaa) has announced 

that the much-hyped 

QR180 million ‘Education 

Park’, which aims at disseminating 

information on 

ways to conserve water and 

electricity in an innovative 

way, will open doors to the 

public by April 2014. 

Quoting a Kahramaa official, 

Al Watan reported that 

work was in progress at the 

under-construction Park in 

Thumama area. 

The official added, “The 

Awareness Park will serve as 

a centre of learning dedicated 

to increase awareness 

among school and university 

students about the need for 

rationalisation of electricity 

and water consumption. It 

will educate and entertain 

simultaneously in order to 

attract children and youth.” 

According to the official, 

different models of ecofriendly 

electricity generation 

and water desalination 

plants will be exhibited at 

the park to increase awareness 

about the latest ecofriendly 

devices available in

excessive energy consumption, 

control indoor pollutants 

and provide noise 

insulation. 

In addition, the building’s 

shape reflects the local cultural 

identity. It is a clear 

example of the intelligent 

new technology of construction 

as well as control and 

surveillance systems. It is 

worth mentioning here that 

the Awareness Park has 

bagged the coveted sustainability

MoI holds blood donation campaign 


DOHA 

AS part of its humanitarian 

mission, the Ministry of 

Interior, in coordination with 

the Blood Donation Unit at 

Hamad Medical Corporation 

(HMC), recently held blood 

donation camps at different 

locations of the ministry in 

which several civil and police 

personnel participated. 

The Ministry had earlier 

notified its cadres through 

SMS about the visits of the 

mobile blood donation units 

to specific locations of the

donate their blood. The MoI 

has been organising field visits 

of blood donation mobile 

units to MoI’s locations in 

association with the HMC 

unit for past several years, 

said a MoI press release.

visit 29 MoI locations by the 

end of February. The blood 

donations camps would be 

held at the offices of different 

security departments, service 

centres as well as the headquarter

QATAR Academy’s Early 

Education Center hosted the 

first of a series of open house 

events on Thursday. 

Teachers and some of the 

older students welcomed the 

visitors into their classrooms 

where the parents 

witnessed and participated 

in their children’s activities. 

Assistant Principal 

Margaret Dick said, “We are 

delighted that the majority 

of parents were able to 

spend time in our education 

centre. The purpose of the 

event is to enable the parents 

have a greater understanding 

of the philosophy 

of our programme and the 

curriculum. We value the 

importance of the partnership 

we share with them in 

their children’s development 

and learning.” 

“The partnership is evident 

with the way the parents 

moved around the 

classrooms, talking and 

exchanging views about 

their children with the 

teachers, doing art in the 

multipurpose room and 

playing inside the sensory 

room. The outdoor play area 

was also open for movement 

and play,” Dick added. 

The children’s routine and 

activities reflect the creative 

curriculum, which the centre 

follows. 

“In everything that we do 

here, we pay attention to our 

curriculum and our philosophy. 

Our curriculum considers 

the developmental stages 

of each individual child. As it 

is important to take every 

opportunity for a child to 

learn, we must know and 

understand when the child is 

ready for new learning. We do 

this through continued observation 

and reflection on what 

each child is able to do today 

and what they are ready to do 

tomorrow,” Dick said. 

The assistant principal 

added: “Our philosophy is 

that children learn through 

their own exploration and 

enquiry and that we only 

need to guide them as they 

explore and enquire. There 

were many happy faces from 

the children, the parents and 

teachers today and we’re 

looking forward to working 

with them as their children 

grow”. 

She said the children took 

part in the planned activities 

in the centre and the parents, 

who visited were happy 

to work and play with their 

children. 

After playing with her son

KERALA State Tourism 

Authority (KSTA) will 

hold a road show in Qatar 

soon, Kerala Minister for 

Tourism AP Anil Kumar 

announced at press conference 

on Thursday. 

Kumar was in Doha to 

attend the official 

launching of a Kerala 

expatriate forum 

Wandoor Area Friends 

Association (WAFA). 

He said: “Kerala is an 

Indian state with high 

tourism potential. Kerala 

government has identified 

many sites with historical 

importance. Development 

of such sites will 

not only be a boost to the 

tourism sector but will 

also provide investment 

opportunities for non-residents 

Indians.” 

The minister added: 

“As part of efforts to 

develop tourism sector in 

Kerala, government has 

offered different incentives 

to attract non-resident 

Indians to invest in 

the state. Government 

has announced special 

privileges for Indian 

expatriates who invest 

more than Rs100 million 

in tourism sector in 

Kerala.” 

He said the road shows 

conducted for the first 

time in this region in 

Dubai and Saudi Arabia 

was a huge success. 

“In association with tour 

and travel operators both in 

Kerala and Qatar, Kerala 

Tourism Authority will 

organise road shows in 

Qatar, Muscat and Kuwait 

shortly. The number of 

tourists visiting Kerala from 

the Arab region has 

increased in last few years,” 

he said. 

The delegates who had 

participated in ‘Emerging 

Kerala’- an Indian expatriate 

investor’s meet in Kerala 

recently, also discussed the 

various tourism investment 

projects in Kerala.

QATAR Airways is a gold 

sponsor of the sixth annua 

Al Khor Fly-in programme. 

The event is being held on 

January 18 and 19 under the 

patronage of the Qatar Civil 

Aviation Authority, the 

organising committee of the 

Al Khor Fly-In. 

The award-winning airline 

will be present throughout 

both days of the event, hosting 

a Qatar Airways-branded 

tent for guests. Expected 

to draw up to 5,000 visitors, 

the Al Khor Fly-In will run 

from 9am to 16:30pm on 

both days, and will bring 

together aircraft owners 

from Qatar, the GCC and 

overseas to showcase their 

aircraft and raise awareness 

about aviation in the region.

MES students win Qatar Airways art competition

MES INDIAN School pupils 

Sahal Rahman KV and Sanjay 

K have emerged the winners 

of Qatar Airways children’s 

art competition titled ‘The 

Future of Travel’. 

Altogether 400 pupils from 

various schools participated 

in the competition. 

Qatar Airways has awarded 

the students, along with their 

parents, a trip to the 

Kindercity, a modern development 

centre aimed at 

youngsters from around the 

world to learn and enjoy 

activities, in Zurich, 

Switzerland. 

The five most original 

drawings were chosen as winners 

by a jury panel for the all 

expenses paid trip to 

Kindercity. 

The competition was an 

excellent platform for the students 

to showcase their interest, 

passion and creativity 

towards the exciting travel 

and aviation field. 

Principal AP Sasidharan 

felicitated the winners. Fine 

Arts teacher Sageer PM was 

the mentor of the students.
