THE InterContinental Hotel
in collaboration with the
Supreme Council of Health
(SCH) organised its third
healthy lifestyle campaign on
Sunday.
About 400 staff of the hotel
participated in a medical
camp on the hotel premises.
Healthcare specialists from
the SCH and Hamad Medical
Corporation were present to
measure the participants’
vital statistics (weight, height
and body mass index), blood
pressure and blood glucose
and lipid profile.
The event also featured
check-ups and counselling for
eye health and oral health,
estimation of carbon monoxide
levels in breath, smoking
cessation, interpretation of
the test results, and advice on
physical fitness and healthy
lifestyle.
“This is part of our regular
campaign to encourage the
residents to live healthy
lifestyles which also help in
the prevention of diseases,”
said Dr Abdulla al Emadi, acting
head of the non-communicable
diseases section at the
SCH department of public
Healthcare specialists from the SCH and Hamad Medical Corporation with InterContinental Hotel officials, in Doha, on Sunday.
health.
Hafidh al Busaidy, general
manager of InterContinental
Doha, said that the campaign
was part of a continuous
health programme for the
hotel staff.
“The hotel operates 24
hours a day, seven days a
week. The wellbeing of the
staff is very important. We’re
trying to encourage the people
to live healthy lifestyles
and we make sure that they
have the information they
need to live healthily. We take
immediate action based on
the results,” he added.
Busaidy also said that as
part of the health programme
for staff, the hotel’s cafeteria
now offers more healthy
choices. It has increased its
selection of fresh fruits and
vegetables.
“We also encourage sports
activities among the staff.
Recently we won the interhotel
Olympic and so our
efforts are paying off. We also
have wellness programmes
where they have classes in
tennis, swimming, running
and walking, among others.
Another thing we focus on is
that the employees get
enough downtime,” added
Busaidy.
Speaking about the results
of the previous campaigns, an
SCH official, said, “During the
last campaign, we found
many staff with high blood
pressure, high cholesterol levels
and some obesity which
called for change in lifestyle.
In cases where a follow-up
treatment is needed, we refer
them to the healthcare centres
or at HMC.
“A lot of the people were
smokers because of their
exposure to certain lifestyles.
But we teach them how to
quit or reduce smoking
through smoking cessation.
Over 50 percent of the staff
who came to the smoking cessation
last year have quit
smoking.”
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
THE Supreme Council of
Information
and
Communication Technology
(ictQatar) has investigated
complaints about confusion
caused by incorrect information
being passed to consumers
about Qtel’s Hala
Blackberry service.
ictQatar said in a statement
on Sunday that it has established
that Qtel communicated
confusing and/or incorrect
information to its customers
about data usage limits and
charges that may apply when
those limits are exceeded.
It said that consumers
should note that there were
no recent tariff changes to the
Qtel Hala Blackberry service
offering as approved by
ictQatar in September 2011.
“It remains that customers
who buy the pre-paid Hala
Blackberry service are debited
in increments according to
data usage. As the included
data usage is 250 MB
per/week, Qtel is required to
notify these customers when
they are reaching that limit so
that they may be aware of
charges that may apply after
the limit is exceeded,” the
ictQatar statement said.
It directed QTel to provide
clear and accurate clarification
to its customers on usage
limits and charges that apply
for the Hala Blackberry service
offering by doing the following:
● Refrain from sending any
confusing or inaccurate messages
to the public and its
customers about the Hala
Blackberry service;
● Issue a clear statement to
the public that includes all
relevant information about
the Hala Blackberry service
including charges and data
usage limits that apply;
● Inform its call center staff
of the correct information to
be communicated to all
callers inquiring or complaining
about the service;
● Report to ictQatar by
Thursday on how it has
resolved complaints and
cleared up the confusion it
caused in the market place
about the service.
The regulator indicated
that Qtel has provided a dedicated
hotline for Hala
Blackberry service inquiries
and complaints on
44249033.
It advised customers whose
complaints were not resolved
to contact it at 103 or by email
to consumervoice@ictqatar.
gov.qa to lodge a complaint.
Meanwhile, Qtel, in a statement
on the issue, said that
there had been no changes to
the pricing or data allowance
of its BlackBerry service
which provides customers
with 250 MB of data
allowance every week for
QR15. It said excess usage
beyond the allowance is
charged at QR0.55 per MB.
The telecom service
provider said it implemented
a network upgrade to
enhance the customer experience
through a new SMS alert
service that lets customers
know when they have used 80
percent of their allowance,
and informs them again at
100 percent, to ensure they
are fully aware of their data
consumption.
In the course of implementing
this upgrade, it added, a
number of customers were
identified who were using
more than the 250 MBs allocation
and were not being
charged for the additional
data consumed. This system
error was rectified, resulting
in some customers receiving
unexpected charges.
Qtel admitted that the
application of data limits took
some customers by surprise,
and said it was taking immediate
steps to rectify the issue.
It further said that those
BlackBerry customers who
were charged for excess data
consumption over the past
week would have the credit
restored to their accounts.
“This compensation for usage
beyond the 250 MB data
allowance will be applied
through to Monday, June 11.
From June 12, excess usage
charges will be applied as per
the published tariff of QR0.55
per MB,” Qtel said.
Qatar Airways prepares for Middle East route expansion
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
QATAR Airways is preparing
for its 2012 Middle East route
expansion this week with Iraq
being added to its growing
network.
The northern Iraqi city of
Erbil and capital Baghdad will
join the airline’s international
portfolio of routes over a period
of two weeks.
Starting May 23, scheduled
flights will begin to Erbil, followed
on June 7 by operations
to Baghdad. Both routes
will be operated four-times-aweek
non-stop from Doha.
The addition of Iraq marks
yet another move by the
Doha-based airline to venture
into high demand, underserved
markets.
With the launch of two
routes in Iraq in the space of
just two weeks, Qatar Airways
will take its new start-ups in
2012 to six destinations, with
a further seven routes
planned by the end of the
year.
Qatar Airways Chief
Executive Officer Akbar al
Baker said Iraq had long been
under the microscope by the
company’s planning team,
essentially due to lack of
international air services in a
country that had limited
capacity for many years due
to political instability.
“Now we believe is the right
time to enter Iraq due to
demand and infrastructure
changes in a country that
warrants more business and
greater air access,” he said.
“We constantly evaluate
numerous route opportunities
and taking into consideration
a number of factors, we
feel that now is the opportunity
to venture into this market.
With international corporate
houses looking to do
business in Iraq, frequent air
access will ease travel to and
from the country via our
Doha hub.
“The two Iraq routes mark
the first start-ups in the
Middle East for over a year
and we continue to look at
further destinations within
the region to widen our
reach.”
Over the next few months,
Qatar Airways will launch
flights to new routes – Perth,
Australia (July 3);
Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (July
25); Mombasa, Kenya
(August 15); and Yangon,
Myanmar (October 3).
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways
has become a member of the
Internation-al Congress and
Convention Association
(ICCA), the leading international
industry body promoting
the meetings, incentives,
conferences and exhibitions
(MICE) sector.
Membership of ICCA will
benefit the airline in promoting
its business in Qatar and
as a global carrier flying
MICE traffic to destinations
around the world.
The announcement on
Sunday came as Qatar
Airways prepared to take part
in the world’s leading meetings,
events and exhibitions
trade show, IMEX, in
Frankfurt from May 22 to 24.
The airline currently operates
to over 100 key business
and leisure destinations
across Europe, Middle East,
Africa, Asia Pacific, North
America and South America
flying a fleet of more than 100
aircraft. With a network that
is growing at a phenomenal
rate, MICE operators will
have a wider choice of destinations
to choose from as the
airline not only introduces
new routes, but also provides
delegates with greater flexibility
with increased frequency.
As part of its bid to venture
further into the MICE business,
the Doha-based airline
has been actively involved in
promoting Qatar as an international
MICE destination.
Qatar Airways works closely
with its inbound destination
management arm
Discover Qatar to promote
the airline’s Doha hub, as well
as the hospitality business in
Qatar as a year round market.

Bilal Ibnu Rabah comes
alive on stage at IIS
SANTHOSH CHANDRAN
DOHA
IT was a packed house at
Ideal Indian School on
Friday, where nearly 4,000
people watched in awe and
excitement a docu-drama
show
titled,
‘Nakshathrangal Kara-yarilla’
— re-enacting the life of
the legendary Muslim hero
Bilal Ibnu Rabah.
The docu-drama was part
of a theatre experiment
which was an assortment of
theatre with cinema. The
two-hour-long play directed
by young talent Usman
Marath, on behalf of a
Kerala expatriate forum
‘Thanima’, left the audience
spellbound.
The show was held on
three different platforms
which were located close to
one another. The story of
Bilal, who was one of the
glorious (Sahabahs) companions
of the Prophet
(PBUH) of the golden era, is
very popular in the Arab
and Muslim world and is
often narrated by the elders
even today.
The play began with
Zachariya, enacting the role
of Bilal, taking stage. There
was the element of traditional
theatre with intermittent
dose of video clips.
Even though the lighting,
managed by Symphony
Doha was at times “shoddy
and too heavy”, the experimental
show stole the
hearts of those present.
Zachariya played the stalwart’s
character with maturity
and a level of authority.
Narrating the Muslim history,
Usman not only
revealed the ‘emancipation
of a slave’ but highlighted
the noble virtues of Bilal
and his surroundings. The
perilous journey through
the desert, in those days,
was captured in a film by AK
Bijuraj, which was also one
of the highlights of the
show.
More than 100 actors
took part in the play.
Altogether eight songs narrated
the misery and the
many challenges faced by
Bilal.
The docu-drama
was part of a
theatre experiment
which was
an assortment
of theatre with
cinema.
Talking about the show,
Usman said that it was a
“tough experiment”. “Over
100 actors and 50 assistants
worked for three months to
make the show a success,”
he said.
Besides Zachariya and
Usman, the other key players
included Rafeeq
Rasheed (cameraman),
Ameen Yasir, Shibli and
Anshad Thrissur (music
directors), Jameel Ahamed,
Shibli, Khalid Kaloor and
PT Abdurahman (lyricists)
and Nisthar Guruvayoor
(production designer).
not have done it without the
support of corporate volunteers,”
she said.
In her opening speech,
Mudehki, said, “We aim to
inspire and prepare tomorrow’s
business leaders, our
and an array of fish cooked
in a variety of style were
some of the featured dishes
for the Seafood Night of
Crossroads Kitchen, one of
the outlets at Renaissance
Doha City Center Hotel.
The seafood festival,
scheduled every Thursdays
from 6.30pm to 11.30pm, is
gaining popularity among
the Doha food lovers, who
are in constant hunt for
exciting menu and fresh dining
place concepts.
According to Crossroads
Kitchen Executive Chef
Christian Jean on Sunday,
their growing popularity in
town has a lot to do with
their emphasis on maintaining
the quality of their food,
particularly the freshness of
their seafood. Crossroads
make use of tagine containers
to ensure the freshness
of their food and known for
using small-sized containers
instead of putting large ones
in front of their guests for
better food presentation.
“We take pride of our
kitchen counter where chefs
continuously grill, stir-fry
and sauté the seafood. We
also have oyster bar, sushi,
pasta and carving stations,”
he added.
For only QR225 (with soft
beverages) and QR285 (with
special drinks), one can
already indulge in freshest
marine produce prepared in
conventional manner of
cooking that leave diners
loading their plates with
more. There are also items
that are specially concocted
by Crossroads chefs to complete
the dining experience
of their guests such as the
mussel-papaya salad and
octopus Korean kimchi.
HEC PARIS in Qatar which
offers a portfolio of management
programmes including
the first ever international
Executive MBA (EMBA) in
Qatar, will host the first part of
the 2012 EMBA ‘Energy
Major’ this week.
It will be conducted under
the umbrella of the Total Chair
in Energy and Management.
It consists of two modules,
one in Doha, from May 19 to
24, and one in Paris from
October 15 to 19.
The HEC Paris EMBA participants
have the option to
choose one out of six majors:
luxury, services, entrepreneurship
and innovation, aerospace
& aviation, global business
perspectives, and energy.
They have the opportunity to
benefit from a relevant venue,
academic and industry
experts, as well as from the
interaction with like-minded
peers from around the globe.
Participants at a HEC Paris in Qatar programme, in Doha, recently.
Participants from all five
HEC EMBA locations (Paris,
Doha, Beijing, Shanghai and
St Petersburg) who have chosen
to major in energy will be
in Doha this week for an intensive
five-day-programme. In
total, Qatar will host 48 energy
major participants from 17
countries, including Qatar, the
US, France, the UK, Germany,
Chile, Mexico, Colombia,
Russia, Denmark and more,
reflecting the international
character of the HEC
Executive MBA.
“With Qatar as the largest
LNG exporter worldwide, and
given LNG’s role in redesigning
the global energy map, it
makes lot of sense to host the
energy major in Doha,” said
Prof Antoine Hyafil, academic
dean of HEC Paris in Qatar.
This first part of the energy
major, being held in Doha,
consists of a number of subjects
taught through lectures
and group work. They include:
the fundamentals of gas and
LNG; the fundamentals of oil
markets; financing of energy
infrastructures; geopolitics of
energy, and the future of
renewable energy, as well as a
visit to Ras Laffan.

APPROPRIATE financial
regulatory reforms and economic
development will
assist nations achieve the
UN millennium development
goals (MDGs), said
Doha Bank Group CEO R
Seetharaman.
Speaking at the United
Nations General Assembly’s
‘High-Level Thematic
Debate on the State of the
World Economy’ in New
York recently, Seetharaman
said, “The current realignment
of global architecture
will support the achievement
of one of the eight UN
Millennium development
goals ‘to develop a global
partnership for development’,
which aims to develop
an open, rule-based, predictable,
non-discriminatory
trading and financial system.
“Economies need to integrate
the principles of sustainable
development into
their policies and programmes
and reverse loss of
environmental resources.
This will also enable such
economies to achieve the
UN Millennium development
goal of ‘Ensure environmental
sustainability’.
Qatar’s National Vision
2030 has also considered
environment development
as one of the pillars of its
points. Financial sector can
also participate in this sustainable
development by
taking initiatives to manage
climate change and mitigate
global warming.”
Seetharaman participated
in the roundtable on
‘Increasing stability, predictability
and transparency
in the financial sector’.
He highlighted the key
reasons for the crisis and the
areas which require attention
from regulatory level
and macroeconomic policy
level.
“The key areas which
required attention from regulatory
level are scope of
Doha Bank Group CEO R Seetharaman speaks during a session at the United Nations headquarters,
in New York, recently.
regulation, market discipline,
information gaps and
systemic liquidity provision.
The key areas which
required attention at the
macroeconomic policy level
are response of monetary
policy to systemic risks,
strong fiscal policies and
regulation of international
capital flows and alignment
of fiscal and monetary policies.
Today’s euro crisis is a
clear case of conflict
between monetary and fiscal
policies,” he said.
He further said, “In
response to the crisis the
Global regulatory reforms
had been actively reviewed
under the leadership of G20
countries in coordination
with Financial Stability
Board (FSB), International
Monetary Fund (IMF) and
Bank for International
Settlements (BIS).
“The Dodd–Frank Wall
Street Reform and
Consumer Protection Act in
the US implemented the regulatory
reforms in response
to the crisis. The Volcker’s
Rule was enacted under this
regulation to restrict proprietary
trading. The SEC also
proposed tougher disclosure
rules for Hedge fund and
private equity firms.
“The FSB, IMF and BIS
are working on macro-prudential
policy frameworks,
including tools to mitigate
the impact of excessive capital
flows. Policy framework
for systemically important
financial institutions, regulation
and oversight of shadow
banking, risk practices
on structured products were
some of the areas which
required review in the light
of current crisis.”
Seetharaman gave
insights on the GCC economic
trends.
He said, “The SWOT
analysis of the GCC
economies revealed opportunities
in the areas of infrastructure
and non-renewable
energy.
“The rationale for diversification
includes supporting
economic growth, complement
hydrocarbon sector,
generate employment, make
the economy more resilient
to external shocks, improve
infrastructure and support
climate change. GCC’s
economies have promoted
stability and transparency in
their economic development
through visionary leadership
and long term plans for
execution.”
He analysed Qatar’s
National Development
Strategy saying, “The Qatar
National Development
Strategy (NDS) 2011-2016
will set a path towards
achieving the goals of Qatar
National Vision 2030.
Aggregate GDP growth in
2012-2016 is expected to
average to 6.9 percent with
hydrocarbon GDP growth
expected to be 4.4 percent
and non-hydrocarbon GDP
to be at 9.1 percent. Services
will be one of the major drivers
of the economy. The
ratio of non-hydrocarbon
private investment to total
GDP could reach 15 percent
by 2016 which is nearly double
its share of 2009.”

The Forum offers
sweeping overview
of issues on
democracy, development
and free
trade in the M-E.
POLITICAL and Economic
decision-makers were optimistic
about future developments
in the region at sessions
of the 12th Doha Forum on
Sunday, with the conflicts in
Palestine and Syria being cited
as perhaps the most problematic
threats to this outlook.
“Tunisia is the first instance
where Islamists and secularists
are ruling together,” noted
Kamal Ben Younes, a professor
at the International Studies
Institute in Tunisia, referring
to this as cause for optimism
in the Tunisian case.
Speaking at a workshop
session entitled ‘Practical
Implications of the New
Democratic Movements in
the Middle East’, he listed
both reasons for optimism
and unresolved issues in the
new Tunisian political landscape,
the latter of which
included the relative lack of
experience of the current
administrators, and the fact
that 80 percent of Tunisian
trade was with Europe, which
is currently in dire economic
condition.
Emma Bonino, vice-president
of the Italian Senate,
advised regional decisionmakers
to “care for democracy,
and build it day by day, and
try to find friends and allies.
You have to build a regional
approach to democratic governance
and you should try to
avoid reverting to an outdated
Nationalism”, she added, giving
advice to attendees of the
session based on her many
years’ experience in her former
roles as Italian minister
for EU affairs and trade, EU
commissioner and EU
Member of Parliament.
In addition to addressing
the North African countries
which most prominently manifested
the Arab Awakening,
reference was made to two separate
conflict areas in the
Arab world, namely Palestine
and Syria. This pattern extended
to the third session of the
Forum, entitled ‘The Future of
Peace in the Middle East’.
The moderator, the Arab
League’s Ambassador to
France HE Dr Nassif Hitti,
referred to the issues of
Palestine and Syria at the very
outset of the session.
Discussing the Palestinian situation,
Hitti opined that
based on current trends, it
was more a matter of “management
of the conflict rather
than of resolving it”.
The Doha Forum is an
established, world-class
event that celebrates its 12th
edition this year under the
patronage of the Emir His
Highness Sheikh Hamad bin
Khalifa al Thani, who
presided over the opening
ceremony earlier in the day.
The opening also featured a
welcome speech delivered by
Prime Minister and Minister
of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh
Hamad bin Jassim bin
Jabor al Thani.
The Forum is intended to
offer a sweeping overview of
issues regarding democracy,
development and free trade in
the Middle East, the Arab
world and globally. More
broadly, the international
meeting is to discuss critical
political, economic, social,
financial, strategic and human
matters of pressing concern
for a region witnessing some
of the most substantial
changes in its long history.
Sri Lanka set to emerge
maritime hub: Rajapaksa
RAJESH MISHRA
DOHA
SRI LANKAN President
Mahinda Rajapaksa on
Sunday said that despite having
suffered terrorism for 30
years, Sri Lanka, one of the
oldest democracy of Asia, was
repositioning itself and was
all set to emerge as an economic,
maritime and educational
hub of the continent.
Speaking at the 12th Doha
Forum and Enriching the Middle
East’s Economic Future
Conference Rajapaksa, who
was the Guest of Honour at the
Forum, thanked Qatar for hosting
the Forum and said that it
provided Sri Lanka an opportunity
to sustain and enhance
economic cooperation and further
strengthen historical ties
with the Arab world.
“The Middle East is very important
for us. There are
around 1.7 million Sri Lankan
migrant workers whose contribution
to Sri Lanka’s foreign
exchange is the highest.
Sri Lanka also imports its
largest amount of energy from
this region. We seek to consolidate
our historical, maritime
Sri Lankan President Mahinda
Rajapaksa.
We seek to consolidate
our historical,
maritime, commercial
ties and
build on it further.
MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA
commercial ties and build on
it further,” Rajapaksa said.
“Sri Lanka is poised to
become self-sufficient in food
production with its efforts to
build a strong rural economy
by investing in a big way in
agriculture. Sri Lanka also
has an export driven economy.
The country is on way to
build an aviation hub and a
maritime hub with free port
in the southern region, where
I come from,” he added.
According to the Sri
Lankan president, the country
also boasted of high GDP
growth rate, highest literacy
in South East Asia and
remarkable progress in IT
sector. He said that the country
was also working towards
construction of more power
stations to meet domestic
and commercial needs and
expanding railways.
Also speaking on the occasion,
another Guest of Honour
Abdou Diouf, former president
of Senegal and currently
Secretary-General of the
International Organisation of
La Francophone, stressed the
need for sustainable development
and exhorted participants
of the Doha Forum to
discuss new approaches.
“The global financial crisis
and the Arab Spring call for
new approaches towards
tackling these issues. The old
theories will not do,” he said.
Diouf also lauded Qatar for its
commitment towards regional
peace and criticised the
bloodshed in Syria caused by
a man’s egotistic attitude.
