Accepting Growth
Attendees at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
“What you really feel when you walk into a Playhouse is a big Playhouse hug,”
says Nancy Gianni, President of Gigi’s Playhouse. Established in 2004, Gigi’s Playhouse announced
the opening of its newest location in Rockford on January 8. When Nancy Gianni’s
daughter Gigi was born with Down syndrome, she promised to make the world a more accepting
place for Gigi and those with Down syndrome. This motivated her to create a place
where families could find resources and support.
Now, seven years later, there are nine Gigi’s Playhouse locations. Four of them opened
this year: Des Moines, Iowa, Atlanta, New York, and the first international Playhouse in
Querataro, Mexico. The mission of Gigi’s Playhouse is to increase positive awareness of
Down syndrome through national campaigns and educational programs. Each Playhouse
offers free educational programs focused on speech, language, social skills, literacy and
math. These programs would not be possible without the dedication of the volunteers who
not only teach the students, but also provide the learning materials.
Gigi’s Playhouse was started in Hoffman Estates, but Gianni says, “We are so proud of our
Barrington background. Since its inception our board has been governed predominately by
Barrington residents and many of our amazing volunteers come from Barrington as well.”
Like other Gigi’s Playhouse locations, Rockford was truly embraced by their community.
Gigi proudly thanked everyone who attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and this spring
she will speak at openings in Manhattan and Atlanta.
Gigi’s Playhouse is more than a place for parents and families looking for answers. It is a
place of acceptance and inspiration.
“The Playhouse hug” as Gianni
describes it can be felt from the
colorful walls, to the stage, and to
the donor wall dedicated to those
who support Gigi’s Playhouse.
Madrigals Delight in D.C.
After winter break, 27 enthusiastic Madrigal members headed to Washington D.C. to
perform at venues around the city. Nancie Tobison directed the choral performances on this
magical trip. The Madrigals spread Barrington holiday cheer at the Old Post Office, the United
States Botanic Garden, and the famous Williard Hotel. The White House shined in its Christmas
Glory as the Madrigals sang at the annual Holiday Open House. One of their final stops was at
the National Christmas Tree Music Program at the Ellipse. The National Christmas Tree is a
40-foot Colorado blue spruce that was planted in 1978 from a Pennsylvania farm along with 50
smaller trees representing the 50 states. Visiting Washington D.C. was a dream come true for
many and an experience they will never forget. The Madrigals look forward to their trip to Italy in
March where they will sing at the Pope’s summer palace.
A small sign designating the road as a Heritage Corridor has been placed at the
southern entrance to Old Sutton Road.
Preserving Scenic Roads
The Barrington Area Conservation Trust (BACT) announced that it has completed the
area’s first Heritage Corridor on Old Sutton Road, protecting one of the scenic roads
in Barrington Hills that contributes to the unspoiled beauty of the local countryside.
The corridor is located on Old Sutton Road from Lake- Cook Road south to Donlea
Road. Scenic road easements contributed by Susan and Jim Kennedy and Mary and
Stephen Smith in 2010 allowed designation of the Heritage Corridor. The scenic
road easements comply with a state statute, the Illinois Real Property Conservation
Rights Act that allows protection of roadways that have visual, historical and cultural
significance.
“Under our program, ownership of the land along the roadway remains with the
property owner, but a conservation easement offers an additional layer of protection
against future alterations of the roadway,” said BACT Executive Director Karen
Yancey.
The program allows property owners to place conservation easements 10 to 50 feet
from the center or the edge of the road pavement into the setback of individual
homeowner’s properties. Each easement runs parallel to the road and is jointly held
by the BACT and the local municipality. When more than half of property owners
along a section of road have placed easements, the road becomes eligible for Heritage
Corridor designation.
Other roads that are eligible for Heritage Corridor designation in Barrington are: Miller,
Bateman, Haeger’s Bend, Plum Tree, Oak Knoll, Brinker, Ridge, Chapel, Cuba and
Otis. Roads may be eligible if they meet the following two requirements: 1) the road
connects major thoroughfares, but was designed for local residential use; 2) if altered,
the resulting roadway would significantly change the rural character of the area. The
Heritage Corridor program is one of several private land protection programs offered
by the BACT.
Citizens for Conservation will hold its 15th annual Native Plant, Tree and Shrub Sale on
Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 from 9a.m. – 3p.m. A huge selection of robust, hardy
native plants will be available for purchase and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand
to answer questions.
Native plants provide many advantages for gardeners and the environment. They do not
require fertilizers or pesticides, saving you both time and money. In addition, their deep,
fibrous root systems firmly anchor soil to help prevent erosion and conserve water. Native
plants do not require watering, but instead provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies
and other wildlife.
Native forbs (flowering plants) and grasses will be available on the day of the sale, but
trees and shrubs must be ordered in advance. If you wish to order before the sale, you can
find an order form on the CFC website at www.citizensforconservation.org. For volunteer
information, please call the CFC office and leave a message for Ginger. The sale will be at
CFC’s headquarters, 459 W. Highway 22, in Lake Barrington.
Inspired Artists
Most people would be daunted trying to re-create a masterpiece by one of
history’s most famous artists – but not the third, fourth, and fifth-grade students in the
Hough Street School self-contained program. Last fall, they did just that for a school project.
Their work was so inspired that it ended up on walls of Sherman Hospital’s new Cancer Care
Spring is in full swing!
Center in Elgin.
As a part of a six-week-long intensive study of art, the Hough Street students had been
assigned to reproduce masterpieces from some of the world’s great artists, including
Monet, Seurat, Rembrandt, and O’Keeffe. With the help of teachers Maggie Gruber and
Georgia Nelson, the students gave an Artist’s Reception at Hough Street School where
they dressed as their artist and answered audience questions in the artist’s voice regarding
their masterpieces.
In the audience that night was Mary Gleason from Sherman Hospital. She had heard about
the project through one of the students’ parents. Gleason was so impressed that Sherman
Hospital offered to make a donation to Hough Street School in order to have the students’
artwork displayed at the Cancer Care Center, where patients undergoing chemotherapy and
other cancer treatments could be inspired by the beautiful works of art.
With the help of Maura Gonsalves, a graphic designer and artist, the artwork was then catalogued,
framed, arranged as a gallery-style exhibition at the Center, and finally unveiled at
a special grand opening event on December 13, 2010 to honor the artists and their families.
The artwork had an incredible reception from the patients and their families, who have been
amazed by the talent displayed and cheered by the wonderful, inspired interpretations.
Barrington Celtic Fest
The Village of Barrington continues to cultivate and support
its wonderful community, and the growth of the village has never
been more apparent than now. With new businesses and entertainment
options flourishing, Barrington truly has become a great place
to live, work and play. Building on such rich traditions as the Independence
Day Celebration, Brew Fest, Cruise Nights, the Art Festival,
Homecoming Day and Scarecrow Fest, the Village is thrilled to
announce the addition of a celebration that’s new to Barrington in
2011 but bound to become another fantastic annual event.
The inaugural Barrington Celtic Fest will take place on Thursday,
March 17 on South Cook Street between Park Avenue and Station
Street, including McGonigal’s Pub. The festival will run all day, beginning
at 11 a.m. and ending at approximately 1 a.m. Large tents will be
erected so patrons can enjoy the celebration outdoors without worries
about the fickle March weather.
The full agenda for the day is still being finalized, but it will include
live music all day, a mix of local food and retail merchants, various
entertainment including Irish dancers, and of course plentiful availability
of food and beverages both in the outdoor festival area and
the pub.
