By MABEL RICHARDS " ••:>•'-\
I came back from a few days spent in Montreal with ;
a variety of impressions:
••
The girls are Twiggy-chic. ;
Dress shops do not cater to any lady who has allowed
herself to eat beyond a size 14. \
Montreal makes other Canadian cities appear as over- ;
grown farm villages, but their weather makes Saskat- J
che.wan air feel like the banana belt. \
* * * •
Place Ville Marie, that swarm of underground shops I
where you can spend a week without coming up into the I
sunshine, is a marvellous hodge-podge but the prices •
are beyond the reach of the average woman, in my opinion. I
The specialty dress shops were featuring, the week I t
was there, gorgeous creations in black and white, all of I
them designed for the very young. White lace frills at I
neck and wrist marked coats as well as dresses. Had I
they been less mini, they would have been a barkening I
back to the days of the cavaliers.
•
With these stunning outfits, the tiny madamoiselles wore '
thigh-high white boots, and on their heads wisps of black I
or white fur.
I
Jn cities further west I saw few of these black and white I
creations, so perhaps it is anew style, or perhaps some- •
thing uniquely French-Canadian.
I
* * * J
Anyone who attended Expo will not have to be told of •
the marvellous eating places in Montreal, but to the new- •
comer they are a source of delight. I gained the impression •
that the worst of their restaurants was an improvement •
over the best in some western cities. Montreal is worth visiting - simply to
eat' 1 , much less for tourist rubber- •
necking.
I found a tiny spot which in English would be called
"The Laughing Bull", where charcoal steaks were a
speciality. With the steak they served a marvellous sauce,
and potato baked in charcoals, and a salad with a very
special flair. I am afraid that in this little cafe, and others,
I ate my way through a budget which had been optimistically
designed to carry me across Canada, and by no means
did.
* * *
If Montrealers carry any animosity towards the non-
French - speaking Canadian they certainly hide it well. I
met no one who did not speak English, and no one who
They
showed
are
the
without
slightest
exception,
resentment
I found,
because
a friendly
I spoke no
and
French.
courteous
people who go out of their way to make things easy
for the visitor.
In a small coffee house I met students who were strongly
separatists, and who had little respect for either Reni
Levesque, or Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
"How", I asked them, "are you going to get along without
v American investment if you separate from the rest of
Canada? If you have an answer to that one, the rest of
us will be very interested!"
"Socialism 1" said the young men in unison.
While ,1 was in Montreal Lanier LaPierre made a speech
in which he warned his listeners that any attempt to take
over American investment in Quebec would see the U.S.
Marines on their soil the next day. The young separatists
scoffed at the idea.
^4 sjc )fi ,
All of Eastern Canadaj indeed as far as the Lakehead, j
was bathed in snow last week, and icy sleet, and cold j
winds which pierced one's very marrow. But the prairies-;
were nude, and all across the land early golfers were ;
enjoying some untimely warm weather.
Back to Vancouver, -- and rain, of course. But the mag- ;
nolias and Japanese cherry, .and the forsythia is in bloom, ;
and one can easily forget the rain before such beauty^ ;
Truly, Canada is a land of contrasts, some of it dull J
and some of it fascinating in the extreme. I am glad there ;
is such variety; I am glad that French Canada is apart ;
of our country and I hope to Heaven they never leave us, ;
and I am glad that, however briefly, I was able to take |
in this panorama of a land. ;
I know it is a cliche, but it makes one happy to be part ;
of it. :
Local Kinsmen Attend
Mother's March Meet
At the annual meeting of the,
Rehabilitation Foundation of
B.C. held in Vancouver recently,
approximately 200 area and
local Mother's March representatives
and Mother's
March campaign Chairmen
were present to assist and formulate
policy for the distribution
of funds derived from
the recently held Mother's
March appeal throuhout the
Province.
Among the delegates at the
Kinsmen-sponsored foundation
meeting were four members of
the Quesnel KinsmenClub,Carl
Foote, president of the Quesnel
club, Fred Baxter area rep.
Bill Bass, observer, and George
Owens, local rep., and 1968
Mother's March Chairman.
The total figures of this
year's Mother's March Appeal
will reach an all time high of
$240,000. Of this total $1,867.
19 was raised in Quesnel.
The objective of the Foundation
which began in 1944 as the
results of an epidemic of Poliomyelitis
in B.C., is to pioneer
research and build special
health centres towards assisting
handicapped people, especially
children. Once the program
has attained its goal, the
Foundation turns the services
over to the government or a
hospital. The G.F. Strong
Rehabilitation Centre of which
the Foundation, through the
Kinsmen Clubs inB.C.,bought
the land and donated the
swimming pool especially built
for handicapped people in
wheelchairs, and the Travelling
Clinics throughout B.C. are
examples.
Two programs that will be
turned over to Responsible Authorities
will be the speech
and hearing clinic to the Vancouver
General Hospital and the
Vancouver Training Workshop
for the handicapped to the government.
At the luncheon held on Sunday,
March 24, the guest speaker
was Dr. Pat McGeer MLA
and director of the Kinsmen
Laboratory of Neurological Research
at the University of B.C.,
a project started in 1967 to .
conduct research in field relating
to diseases and disabilities
arising in or involving nerve
tissues.
Dr., McGeer spoke on the
"Changing Roles of Volunteering
Service Foundation." He
stressed that with diseases becoming
more prevelant as days
go by, the foundation must keep
pace to save lives by phrasing
out their present services
quicker and go into the pioneering
field. He states that it is
the government duties to look
after health and welfare in the
country and said not to fear
the loss of the services for the
government will see that they
are kept on especially when the
services are dealing with handicapped
children.
At the close of the meeting,
all delegates were invited to go
through the various clinics such
as the Vancouver Training
Workshop for the handicapped,
the speech and hearing clinic
Welcome Wagon
We welcome the following
newcomers to Quesnel:
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Cayen,
formerly of Surrey, B.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Valance Tetroe
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stuart,
from Terrace, B.C.
Mrs. Ruth Pennington and
daughter, from Vancouver.
and the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation
Centre.
The comments of one local
delegate sums up the whole
meeting. "It is a- big - shock
to see at these clinics children
in wheelchairs, deformed
and handicapped. One wonders
above what is done and thinks
about what can further be done
to help these people especially
pre-school children if the
money needed is available.
When one talks about thousands
of dollars spent at these clinics,
it is only a drop in the bucket
what can be spent. It is sad
indeed, when one's future is
hinged to the price of adollar,"
Trip
CPA Stewardess Pat Adams
and Mother's March chairman
George Owens were present
Saturday morning to see fouryear-old
A fashion show highlighted
the afternoon session of the
annual Cariboo District Wo-
. men's Institute Spring Rally
at Williams Lake last week.
Featured were Pat Cornwall
of Skyline who wore a sari,
Ruth Grover in black negligee
"An Influence on My Life",
and the three contestants,
Richardson of Skyline, all held
the interest of their audience
throughout. The contest judge,
Mrs. Anne Stevenson of Williams
Lake, gave helpful comments
on the speeches and
awarded first prize to Ev Fisher,
who told the story of her
month's stay at St. Raphael,
California, where she took
training in the use of a seeing -
eye dog. Mrs. Fisher has her
dog, Erica, on the platform
- "A Heritage of Canadian
Handicrafts'. Mrs. Broughton
had taken all the information
given her by the Cariboo
W.I.'s and composed the Cariboo's
submission to this book.
The Quesnel View members
brought a light touch to the
afternoon with their comical
skit and songs, just prior to
the workshop session.
The workshop questions this
year dealt with aspects of the
status of women. With over
80 women in attendance, the
meeting room really buzzed
while the eight groups discussed
the questions in various
corners. The results of each
group's discussion will be evaluated
and a report given at
the District Convention to be
held at Dragon Lake Hall on
June 1st.
NOMINATIONS
Appointed on the Nominations
Committee for the Convention
W.I. Corner
141 Mile Ranch, Mrs. Orval
Fletcher of 140 Mile Ranch
and Mrs. D. Bell of 150 Mile
Ranch, spoke on the difficulties
faced by women when they
must pay death taxes following
the death of their husbands.
Many times ranchers wives
have been forced to sell all
the cattle and other assets in
order to pay the tax, leaving
them with nothing to live on.
This subject will be gone "into
more fully and a resolution presented
at a later date. Meanwhile,
these women have submitted
briefs to the Royal Commission
on the Status of Women,
which is a start in bringing
the plight of widows left
with, taxable estates, to the
attention of the government.
(Continued from psige' four)
when lifted from their normal
nursery environment.
Another advantage is that the
bullet desing lends itself to
mechanization of planting and
makes' possible the development
of a planting machine
which could do the work of a
number of planters who are not
always readily available when
required. This could be of much
importance in view of the tight
schedule of British Columbia's
reforestation program which
has as its objective the production
of 75 million seedlings
a year by 1975.
In addition to the factors of
increased' planting speed and
still-to-be-determined surviv- .
al rates, there is the all-important
cost factor. Certain aspects
of the system now on
trial are more expensive, but
there are other considerations
such as thereduction of nursery
cost, the more universal choice
of growing areas over the limited
choice of the present nursery
system and the difficulty of
locating suitable sites.
The break-even point could
come with the survival rate
alone. If this point is reached,
many other factors favour the
bullet-planting method on
selected reforestation sites,
and it is hoped the next few
years .will provide the answer.
Mother Shipton's Prophecies
Have you ever heard of Mother Shipton's Prophecies?
While I was visiting in Saskatchewan my mother dug
up the poem which Mother Shipton wrote, believe it or
not, in the year 1559! Perhaps you will find the predictions
of this ancient lady as fascinating as I did, and will marvel
at how many of them have come to pass 400 years later. . .
MOTHER SHIPTON'S AMAZING PROPHECIES
A house of glass shall come to pass
In merry England, but, alas,
War will follow with the work
In the land of the Turk,
And state and state in fierce strife
Struggle for each other's life.
Carriages without horses shall go,
And accidents fill the world with woe.
In London Primrose Hill shall be
And the centre of a Bishop's see.
Around the world thoughts shall fly
In the twinkling of an eye.
Through the hills men shall ride •
And neither horse nor ass bestride.
|f
Under water men shall walk,
Shall ride, shall sleep, shall talk.
Iron in the water shall float
As easily as a wooden boat.
God shall be found and shown
In a land that's now unknown.
Fire and water shall wonders do,
And England shall admit a Jew.
Three time three shall lovely France
Be led to dance a bloody dance,
Before her people shall be free
Three tyrant rulers shall she see,
Each springing from a different dynasty,
And now a word in uncouth rhyme
Of what shall be in later time.
In those far-off wonderful days
Women shall get a strange odd craze
To dress like men and breeches wear,
And cut off their beautiful locks of hair,
And ride astride with brazen brow
As witches do on broomsticks now.
Their love shall die and marriage cease
• And babes and sucklings so decrease
Their wives shall fondle cats and dogs.
In eightee - hundred and ninety-six
Build your houses of rotten sticks,
For then shall mighty wars be planned
And fire and sword sweep over the land.
And those who live the century through
In fear and trembling this will do;
Fly to the mountains and the glens,
To bogs and forests and wild dens,
For tempests will rage and oceans will roar
And Gabriel stand on sea and shore,
And as he toots his wondrous horn
Old worlds shall die and new be born.
In the air men shall be seen
In black, in white, and in green.
How strange, but yet they shall be true.
The world upside down shall be.
And gold be found at the root of a tree.
The world to an end shall come
In nineteen-hundred and eighty-one.
