DRUG ARM PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
HIGHLIGHTS
South Australia
Outreach
The Street Outreach Service (SOS)
continues to be a major highlight of DRUG
ARM’s service provision in South Australia.
With rising concern in Australia about the
incidents of binge drinking, particularly
amongst young people, SOS programs
are able to respond where the issues are
occurring – on the streets, after hours,
and when many other services are not
available.
The newest outreach service is in the
Adelaide CBD, which brings the total
number to seven vehicles. The service
commenced operations in March of 2009,
bringing a new set of challenges for both
staff and volunteers, including a large
homeless population, and increased
contacts with Indigenous people. DRUG
ARM has sought new partnerships and
networking opportunities in response to
these challenges, developing relationships
with existing homeless services, and key
Indigenous service providers.
The South and South-Western SOS
programs continued to provide support
for young people in the region, as well as
supporting events run by local councils.
Support for youth events also occurred
in the North and North-Eastern regions,
with volunteers providing information and
support to young people at skate, music,
aerosol art, hip hop, open mic nights and
other events. SOS also provided support for
Police Blue Light events in several regions,
providing information to both young people
attending the events, and parents when
they arrived to collect their children.
Information stands are provided on a
monthly basis in three Westfield Shopping
Centres. This is a service unique to South
Australia, and due to its great success,
similar opportunities are being explored
in other states. Through these stands, staff
and volunteers are able to make contact
with parents, grandparents, teachers and
young people, providing information and
support on drugs and alcohol, discussing
ways of talking with teenagers, and
answering frequently asked questions.
