Overall, awareness was highest am<strong>on</strong>g the youngest groups, with 28% of those<br />

aged 18 to 24 saying that they had heard a lot or a little.<br />

4.3 Percepti<strong>on</strong>s and understandings of <strong>synthetic</strong> <strong>biology</strong><br />

Almost half of the teleph<strong>on</strong>e survey resp<strong>on</strong>dents (49%) said “d<strong>on</strong>’t know”or<br />

“nothing” when asked ‘What words come to mind when I say <strong>synthetic</strong><br />

<strong>biology</strong>?’. This compares with just 30% of resp<strong>on</strong>dents to the same questi<strong>on</strong> in<br />

the US study. Resp<strong>on</strong>dents over the age of 65 were more likely to say “d<strong>on</strong>’t<br />

know”or “nothing” compared with those in other age groups (60% compared to<br />

the average of 49%). Those in social grades DE were more likely to say “d<strong>on</strong>’t<br />

know” or “nothing” compared with those in other social grades (60% compared<br />

with the average of 49%).<br />

The other resp<strong>on</strong>ses to this questi<strong>on</strong> were first analysed by counting the<br />

frequency of the words. The most comm<strong>on</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>ses were “man-made”,<br />

“<strong>synthetic</strong>”, “<strong>biology</strong>”, “genetic”, “cl<strong>on</strong>ing” and “body”which were all menti<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

between 30 and 50 times by the 1005 resp<strong>on</strong>dents 6 . This can be seen in<br />

illustrative form in figure 4.2 below which presents the results in word cloud 7 .<br />

The resp<strong>on</strong>ses were then coded into thematic groups for further analysis. The<br />
