Dear Collector
The 2009 Subscription Coin recreates the design
of one of the gold ingots produced exclusively
from the Adelaide Assay Office between March
and November 1852. These ingots
were the first gold legal tender
medium of exchange in
Australia and were produced
to overcome the financial
crisis in the Colony of
South Australia.

2009 $1 Selectively Gold Plated Silver Proof Coin
This coin represents one of the most historic associations with Australian numismatology.
In 1851 Australia was in the
grips of drought, recession and
unemployment. With the discovery
of gold in Victoria in 1851 it is estimated that
by March 1852 over 8000 able bodied South
Australian men had made their way to these new
“diggings”, taking with them the fledging supply
of ready cash. This resulted in falling prices,
land values and a major distrust of financial
institutions with a state of panic apparent.
To alleviate this huge drain on the Colony,
the then Police Commissioner for South
Australia, Alexander Tolmer, proposed and
led gold escorts from the Victorian gold fields
and back to Adelaide. Here the gold would be
processed, assessed for its purity and made into
gold ingots, providing the necessary injection of
funds needed by the Colony.
The Bullion Act No. 1, passed by the Legislative
Council and assented on 29 January 1852,
to allow the Adelaide Assay Office to make
assayed gold ingots, which were to be exchanged
as legal tender bank notes.
2009 Subscription Coin
Forty millimetres in diameter and containing
a full troy ounce of fine silver, the rectangular
oval shaped replica ingot has been selectively
gold plated on both the obverse and reverse and
incorporated into the $1 coin. The obverse has
the Authority Stamp, Fineness Stamp and the
Weight Stamp marked on the ingot.
For the very first time, each coin will include die
numbering which has been laser frosted on the
coin die. The life of each coin die varies quite
considerably and for the very discerning
collector, this could result in an
extremely sought after coin.

made payable to the Royal Australian Mint (the Mint). Cheques and
money orders will only be accepted with mailed orders (Aust. only).
Postage must be included with orders and the postage method will
be receipted delivery. Credit card payments will be processed within
48 hours of being received at the Mint. The Mint reserves the right
to withdraw this offer at any time. The Mint will accept the return of
products which have not met customer’s expectations, only within
30 days from dispatch. Refund is conditional on the goods being
received at the Mint in the same condition as dispatched and with
