Dear Collector
I write to you as the Royal Australian Mint
prepares to move into its new premises.
We are currently undergoing the most
significant period of change in our history,
and it is a very exciting and hectic time for
the Mint. Our Refurbishment Project which
commenced in 2007 will draw to an end
during 2009 and the Mint looks forward
to offering a modern and innovative
experience for our thousands of visitors
each year.
During this time of change, visitors to the
Mint will be among the very first to set foot
inside our refurbished premises. However
please be aware that we will not be fully
operational.
Over the coming months, a new look Mint
will be unveiled to the public in stages. In
March, the Ground Floor, which is home
to our new Coin Shop and visitor presses,
will open. In May, the First Floor will
open, which is home to our Gallery and
Theatrette. The Gallery includes exhibits
from our National Coin Collection, displays
illustrating the history of Australian
Coins and the coining process and new
observation windows, from which you
will be able to see the world’s strongest
robot! By June, our visitor café and external
landscaping is hoped to be completed.
In March, it was a pleasure to celebrate
(or commiserate) the end of an era with
many of our local collectors. We held our
final Coin Shop event with a few lucky
door prizes (with Tracia Milton taking out
the main prize) and opportunities to meet
some of our coin and packaging designers.
We look forward to our next event in the
new building and our stunning shopfront.
In April, we released our Australia
Remembers 20c coin, which in 2009
celebrates Australian Service Nurses. A coin
and lapel pin set is due for release later in
the year.
In May, some exciting new releases include
our Fine Silver Year Set. Traditionally this
set has included $1 and 20c themed coins.
In 2009, this set includes all six standard
circulating coin designs.
To mark the completion of the Mint’s
historic refurbishment project, we will
unveil a new master mintmark coin which
will be in use in 2010. This coin will be
available to purchase as a shop exclusive
from May 2009 for 3 months.

2009 Fine Silver
YEAR SET
The 2009 Fine Silver Year Set presents the familiar designs of Australian
circulating currency - the 5c echidna, the 10c lyrebird, the 20c platypus, the

2009 Australia Remembers 20c Uncirculated Coin
Australian Service Nurses
The Australia Remembers series will explore Australian war experiences
and military history behind and beyond the battlefields. Our first coin
will honour past and present Australian Service Nurses with
a commemorative themed 20c coin.
Australian Service Nurses first served with Australian troops in the
Colonial Military Forces in South Africa during the Boer War and
have since seen active service in both world wars, Korea, Vietnam,
Cambodia, Rwanda, Bougainville, East Timor and recently in the
Gulf and Afghanistan conflicts.
The 20c coin design perfectly captures a nurse using her personal touch
to bring comfort and assistance to a wounded ‘Aussie Digger’

60th Anniversary of
Australian Citizenship
In 2009 this nation celebrates sixty years of the enactment of the
Australian Citizenship Act 1948. Over four million people have taken
part in the affirmation ceremony symbolising our unity as a country.
To most new Australians it gives a sense of belonging, a chance to make
a commitment to Australia and its values and to share in the common
future. Of course citizenship also brings with it added freedoms,
not always available in other countries, the right to vote, to stand for
public office and to travel abroad on an Australian passport.
This coin design features the smiling faces of seven new Australians,
each as individual as the country they originate from. Their raised
hands symbolises their pride in becoming an Australian citizen, now
linked symbolically to create the star of Federation. The packaging
captures the moment the very first group in 1949 obtained
Australian Citizenship.

2009 $1 Uncirculated Coins
Bilby
These desert-dwelling marsupials are closely related to bandicoots,
with big ears, silky fur and well-developed claws ideal for burrowing.
Bilbies are often found sheltering near spinifex which is a feature of
the sculpted background on the coin design. Despite the hot climatic
temperatures of their habitat, Bilbies do not need to drink water,
receiving all their moisture from their food which includes insects,
seeds, spiders, fruit and other small animals.
Frilled-Neck Lizard
This amazing little reptile is an Australian icon having appeared on
the original 2c coin design. When trying to attract a mate or when
frightened the frilled ruff around its head unfolds making the lizard
appear much larger — a great theory of defence against its many
predators, but often quite comical in action.
The background coin design features the sculpted design of the sun
with outward radiating circles to represent the hot tropical climate
from where this reptile is found. The Frilled-Neck Lizard can also match
the colour of its surroundings made evident by the pad printing.

These previously released coins have been very popular with $1 coin
enthusiasts and have also launched many young collectors on their
path to a lifelong hobby.

150 Years of State Government - Queensland
Queensland has come a long way since being declared a colony by Queen Victoria
in 1859, from early financial budgetary constraints to one of Australia’s strongest
economies and most popular holiday destinations.
One hundred and fifty years ago Queensland was part of New South Wales, presided
over by Queen Victoria.
In the 1850’s the people of Queensland began a push for a separate state and sent
their petitions to England and the monarch’s attention.
On 10 July 1859 the ship - ‘Clarence’ with the word ‘separation’ emblazoned on its
hull, sailed into Brisbane, bringing with it the news that on 6 June 1859, Queen
Victoria had signed the Letters Patent declaring a new colony. The jubilant crowd
welcomed this news with a 14-gun salute and fireworks in the harbour. Queen Victoria
favoured the name Queensland over the suggested title of Cooksland in honour of
Captain James Cook.

2008 $5 Silver Proof Coin

Avro 504K
After successful service over Europe during World War I and as a training and
private use plane, QANTAS took delivery of its first aircraft the Avro 504K in 1921.
This single engine, wooden structured bi-plane carried two passengers and was
used for joy flights, air taxi services and promoted the future advantages of air
transport to thousands of Australians. The design on this coin is so life-like you can
almost feel the wind rushing by.

The largest passenger jet ever built, the Airbus A380 has a cruising speed of 900 km/h
