The early years of Australia’s currency were tumultuous at best, from the problematic rum trade
and the creation of the Holey Dollar and Dump; to the discovery of gold and the production of
gold sovereigns. It wasn’t until after Federation that Australia’s first official government printed
banknotes were created. It was May 1913, when production of the first 10 shilling notes began,
followed by followed by the £1, £5, £10, and £20, £50, £100 notes in 1914.
