W<br />

e are now well into Term 2 and our<br />

young women are thoroughly engaged<br />

in their learning. Nowhere is this more<br />

evident than in our weekly community school<br />

tours in school time with our regular classes<br />

operating, allowing visitors to view us warts and<br />

all. <strong>The</strong> positive and enthusiastic responses from<br />

our visitors are the best indicators <strong>of</strong> the excellent<br />

work that is taking place in all our learning areas.<br />

Our students are engaged and excited in their<br />

learning, motivated by our outstanding teaching<br />

staff.<br />

This term’s Merit Assemblies have already<br />

rewarded the very large number <strong>of</strong> our students<br />

who have gained awards in all areas <strong>of</strong> school life<br />

from the academic, sporting, social and civic<br />

areas. Congratulations to all our Merit Award<br />

winners from Year 7 to Year 12 and special<br />

thanks to our merit team, Judy Linton, Karen<br />

Parramore, Tania Oxley, Anna Dovellos,<br />

Marianne Cerkesas and Patty Prineas, led by our<br />

Deputy Principal, Dianne Posener.<br />

<strong>The</strong> school Athletics Carnival and Cross-Country<br />

Carnival were highlights <strong>of</strong> our sporting calendar.<br />

Our girls enthusiastically participated, breaking<br />

records, having fun and keeping fit. Thank you to<br />

our carnival coordinator, Rachelle Hodder and our<br />

PD/Health/PE faculty led by Bruce Cuneo, for<br />

their excellent organisation <strong>of</strong> both events.<br />

Another ear splitting event was the Rock the<br />

<strong>School</strong>s concert which both entertained our girls<br />

and provided educational opportunities for our<br />

musicians and VET Entertainment students.<br />

Thank you to our Head Teacher, Music, Jenny<br />

Robinson and her music and visual arts team.<br />

It was lovely to meet so many <strong>of</strong> our Year 7 and<br />

Year 12 parents at the first <strong>of</strong> our Parent/Teacher<br />

evenings where we were able to share our<br />

Principal’s message continued<br />

expectations and hopes for our young women and<br />

develop united approaches from the school and<br />

family for best future outcomes for the girls.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Year 8 and Year 10 Parent/Teacher evening<br />

will take place in the next few weeks while our<br />

Year 9 and Year 11 Parent/Teacher evening will<br />

take place in July. We look forward to seeing you<br />

at these times.<br />

<strong>School</strong> photographs are always a very popular<br />

event on the school’s calendar, the one day we<br />

don’t have to nag about correct uniform. We have<br />

now completed the initial process and the girls<br />

will be receiving the completed photos in the next<br />

few months. Thank you to our teacher<br />

coordinator, Gerard Stewart.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Transit</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Venus</strong><br />

Mr Hickey will give a presentation on the<br />

transit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Venus</strong> at 6.15pm, Monday 4 June in<br />

room 220 above the library.<br />

Following the presentation, parents and<br />

students will be invited to the oval to view the<br />

partial lunar eclipse through a telescope.<br />

<strong>The</strong> first assessment period is now well underway<br />

across the school with a variety <strong>of</strong> assessment<br />

practices ranging from informal class assessments<br />

to class tests, subject tests and with Year 11 a<br />

formal half yearly exam period. All students will<br />

receive a semester one, half yearly report detailing<br />

their progress in the next weeks either at your<br />

Parent/Teacher Night or posted home.<br />

Our Year 7 and Year 9 have now participated in<br />

the national NAPLAN tests. We hear many<br />

different comments about the value or otherwise<br />

<strong>of</strong> these tests. By using the results <strong>of</strong> these tests as<br />

a diagnostic tool we can, though, use them to<br />

benefit our young women.<br />

NAPLAN is not a test with winners or losers.<br />

Unfortunately an ill-informed media misuses and<br />

misinterprets these tests on the My<strong>School</strong> website<br />

to create inaccurate league tables. We at<br />

<strong>Randwick</strong> <strong>Girls</strong> and Boys know this all too well.<br />

It’s intention is not to grade individuals or<br />

compare one student to another, but rather to show<br />

those areas where an individual student is<br />

performing well and those areas where a student<br />

will benefit from extra help on a given day – a<br />

snapshot only.<br />

Our learning support program is using our<br />

NAPLAN results together with the many other<br />

assessment processes our teachers use to ensure<br />

that our students’ learning needs are best met.<br />

repeats every 243 years with pairs <strong>of</strong> transits<br />

8 years apart separated by gaps <strong>of</strong> 121½<br />

years and 105½ years. Since the<br />

phenomena was first recognised there have<br />

only been 6 transits <strong>of</strong> <strong>Venus</strong> – 1639, 1761,<br />

1769, 1874, 1882, the most recent in 2004.<br />

<strong>The</strong> next transit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Venus</strong> is 6 June 2012.<br />

EASTER SHOW ENTERTAINMENT<br />

Entertainment Industry students recently took part in a work placement program through their involvement<br />

in the entertainment program at the Royal Easter Show. Students took part in the program by assisting with<br />

the street parade, costume characters, circus workshops, high diving displays, fan days, stage management &<br />

marshalling, as well as learning skills related to bump in/bump out, costuming & makeup.<br />

Gloria, Mae, Xantre, Sophie, Angelica, Charlotte, Kimberley, Bei Bei & Tori participated in the program,<br />

and congratulations to the six students who successfully completed their compulsory workplacement<br />

requirements. Special thanks to Entertainment Industry teacher Miss Posener, who helped organise the work<br />

placement & supervised the students during the program, and thanks to Mrs Posener (Deputy Principal) and<br />

Mrs Agapitos (VET Co-ordinator) who also visited the students during the show.<br />

YEAR 7 GALA DAY<br />

YEAR 7 STUDENTS recently participated in the annual Eastern Suburbs Sports Zone’s Gala Day<br />

held at Moore Park. All students participated at a high standard and exhibited outstanding<br />

sportsmanship and team commitment. Special mention to the <strong>Randwick</strong> <strong>Girls</strong> teams that were<br />

successful in winning the NETBALL & OZTAG competitions, as well as the SOCCER, NETBALL<br />

& BASKETBALL teams who were narrowly beaten in the finals. <strong>The</strong> other outstanding performers at<br />

Gala Day were the specially selected YEAR 10 STUDENTS who acted as managers, coaches, referees,<br />

umpires & competition organisers. Thanks also to the teachers who coached the students during the<br />

term, and those who supervised the students on the day.<br />

P&C Association<br />

<strong>The</strong> P&C exists to promote the interests <strong>of</strong> the<br />

school by bringing parents and carers and<br />

teaching staff into close co‐operation. <strong>The</strong> focus<br />

for 2012 is on a number <strong>of</strong> fundraising initiatives.<br />

Every year, the P&C donates funds for the end <strong>of</strong><br />

year Presentation Day prizes as well as for school<br />

improvements and resources. <strong>The</strong> P&C also<br />

sponsors information evenings and provides<br />

volunteers to help with Open Day activities,<br />

planning days and staff selection committees.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many ways parents and carers can<br />

support P&C activities.<br />

1. Attend P&C meetings that are usually held on<br />

the 3rd Monday <strong>of</strong> the month unless there is<br />

a change, eg school holidays. Meetings start<br />

at 7.30pm and are held in the school library.<br />

Parking is available near the MPC. Meetings<br />

are advertised in the school newsletter and<br />

through the E-network.<br />

2. Volunteer time to help with fundraising<br />

events.<br />

3. Contribute goods such as food and drinks for<br />

BBQs and/or raffle prizes.<br />

4. Pay the voluntary P&C contribution levy <strong>of</strong><br />

$40 per student. Any amount, however, is<br />

gratefully accepted. Contributions can be sent<br />

to the school in an envelope clearly marked<br />

teenage girls in today’s world.<br />

Dannielle Miller is the acclaimed author <strong>of</strong> ‘<strong>The</strong> Butterfl y Effect’, and ‘<strong>The</strong> Girl with the Butterfl y Tattoo,<br />

a Girl’s Guide to Claiming Her Power,’ as well as numerous articles on the struggles teenage girls go<br />

through with body image and self-esteem. In this talk, she gives you the tools to help your daughters<br />

cut through the bombardment <strong>of</strong> negative and hyper-sexual marketing and bloom into happy and<br />

confi dent teenage girls.<br />

Dannielle reveals the reasons why so many teen girls today are stressed, overwhelmed, exhausted and<br />

angry, and why too many are binge drinking, self-harming or going on extreme diets. As an educator<br />

and student welfare advocate, Dannielle was Students At Risk Coordinator for all high schools in Western<br />

Sydney and is the co-founder <strong>of</strong> Enlighten Education, which provides girls with training and support to<br />

stand up to limiting media and social messages.<br />

<strong>The</strong> one-hour talk, followed by question time, is by turns shocking,<br />

inspiring, humorous, emotional - and ultimately<br />

oval this term. <strong>The</strong> 2500m & 3500m running races were keenly contested, with BRUCE SPORTS HOUSE<br />

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL<br />

Congratulations all students who participated at the annual SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL, held at<br />

the E.S. MARKS ATHLETICS FIELD earlier this term. <strong>The</strong> carnival was a great success, with BRUCE<br />

SPORTS HOUSE winning the Champion Athletics House Shield. Congratulations to Bruce House Captain<br />

Lauren & House Patron Miss Tran.<br />

Outstanding races from our champion athletes, participation in events by the large number <strong>of</strong> students<br />

present, the attendance pointscore & the successful cheer squad competitions, saw the final house<br />

competition keenly contested. Records were broken by Scarlett (12yrs 400m–1min10.43sec), Melodie<br />

(15yrs 800m-3min07.25sec) and Ella (16yrs 800m-2min57.63sec). Special mention to the Year 12 students<br />

<strong>The</strong> Spot Food and Film Festival<br />

On Sunday 11 th March 40 selected students were invited to perform at <strong>The</strong> Spot Food and<br />

Film Festival. Students performed an excerpt from 2011 performance at NIDA Once Upon<br />

a Time. All students demonstrated outstanding performance skill and were wonderful<br />

ambassadors for <strong>Randwick</strong> <strong>Girls</strong> and <strong>Randwick</strong> Boys <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

SPORTS Happenings ...<br />

Congratulations to Year 12 student Lauren, a member <strong>of</strong> the NSW U/18yrs <strong>Girls</strong> Basketball Team who were<br />

undefeated in winning the Australian Basketball Championship. Lauren has been a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Randwick</strong> Girl’s Open & U/15yrs Basketball teams for over 5 years, consistently showing a high level <strong>of</strong><br />

skill & commitment every time she represented the school.<br />

Well done to Year 10 student Ella, who won a gold medal in the junior rescue tube event at the National Life<br />

Saving Championships. Ella also competed in the junior surf race, where she was leading until another<br />

competitor rode a wave in from behind to win the race.<br />

Year 12 student Kate has been selected to represent Sydney East Sports Association at the NSW CHS Open<br />

<strong>Girls</strong> Netball Championships to be held in Albury later this term. Kate has been one <strong>of</strong> the outstanding<br />

netball players at the school over the past 6 years. Well done.<br />

Wednesday afternoon sport for term 2 has begun with students participating in a wide variety <strong>of</strong> physical<br />

activities, including basketball, netball, OzTag, soccer, yoga, bocce, croquet, badminton, table tennis,<br />

cycling, power walking, ten pin bowling and fitness training at both school & Fitness First, <strong>Randwick</strong>.<br />

During terms 2 & 3, selected students from Year 7 & Year 8 will be involved in a grade competition against<br />

other schools in the Eastern Suburbs Sports Zone. <strong>The</strong>se students will represent the school in basketball,<br />

netball, soccer & Oztag competitions. <strong>The</strong>se teams will be coached & umpired/refereed by Year 11 Sports,<br />

Lifestyle & Recreation students.<br />

PD/HEALTH/PE Happenings ...<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the topic area Sports Medicine YEAR 12 PD/HEALTH/PE students have been studying methods <strong>of</strong><br />

preventing sporting injuries, either by sports policy, rule changes, specific training programs &/or safety equipment.<br />

Students from the YEAR 11 & 12 participated in a health seminar presented by Jane Svensson , a midwife from the<br />

Royal Hospital for Women. <strong>The</strong> students were supplied with important information to help them understand childbirth<br />

and the role <strong>of</strong> health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in the birthing process.<br />

YEAR 11 PD/H/PE students have upgraded their knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Body in Motion, with an exercise class at Fitness<br />

First. Thanks to Karen Bruk-Finucane for her assistance in helping <strong>Randwick</strong> <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> students benefit from<br />

the free fitness sessions <strong>of</strong>fered by Fitness First, <strong>Randwick</strong>.<br />

YEAR 10 PD/H/PE students are currently being assessed in AFL & Olympic Handball, whilst YEAR 7-9 PD/H/PE<br />

students are involved in developing important physical skills in cricket, soccer, OzTag, basketball & dance.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the senior PD/Health Crossroads Program, over 110 YEAR 11 STUDENTS attended the annual camp at<br />

the Jindabyne Sport & Recreation Centre last term. <strong>The</strong> remaining students successfully participated in a compulsory<br />

Crossroads Program <strong>of</strong> Health & Personal Development Seminars at school. (see article)<br />
