pay 24-7,” she says. “Clearly, in the world today, we need to offer this type of
service.”
Rivier Art Gallery presents
SEEING as DRAWING/DRAWING as SEEING
From March 10 through April 11, SEEING as DRAWING/DRAWING as SEEING will be on display in the Rivier College Art Gallery. The exhibition
features works from emerging artist Kasey Ramirez and pieces from the distinguished career of Gunnar Norrman. This exhibition presents work in
pencil, charcoal, pastel, conte crayon, drypoint, and lithography.
Many of the Ramirez drawings are as large as six to eight feet in width. Some are experimentally layered
over xerography; others are executed on gessoed paper. The titles suggest manmade, even industrial
subject matter, yet the work is highly abstracted.
The Norrman drawings are typically small, often no larger than 5” x 6”, and they are classically executed.
The subjects are primarily scenes of nature and though understated, they are never fully abstracted.
Instead, they are reduced to simple geometric forms, subtle shades of gray, and rich black tones.
Sr. Theresa Couture, p.m. , Director of the Rivier College Art Gallery, says “Despite obvious differences,
the works of these two artists share a poetic sensitivity and a certain stylistic delicacy that makes them
uniquely compatible for shared exhibition.”
Kasey Ramirez is a BFA degree candidate at the Rhode Island School of Design. Swedish artist Gunnar
Norrman died in 2005 after a career in art that was launched by his first exhibition in 1942 and
continued into his 90s. Norrman is represented in the United States by the Pucker Gallery, Newbury
Street, Boston, which has generously lent all the pieces selected for this exhibition.
SEEING as DRAWING/DRAWING as SEEING will be on display from March 10 to April 11.
The Gallery will be closed March 20-24. The Gallery is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
from 11 a.m.-3:45 p.m. and 6-8:30 p.m.; Tuesday from 6-8:30 p.m. and Friday 11 a.m.-3:45
p.m. Weekend and additional daytime hours are available by arrangement.
