Robert Saggers is RNIB’s Heritage Services
Manager. Clare Carson caught up with him
at RNIB’s talking book studios.
What does your job involve?
My job is very exciting at the moment.
I’m managing the three different
collections which have been brought
together to form Heritage Services.
These are the Research Library, Modern
Records, which are all the reports
and minutes which are produced on a
daily basis and the Archive. It’s quite
inspiring to have all the material at your
fingertips.
Tell us about what you’ve brought in.
I have a photograph dated 1915 from
the Worcester College for the blind sons
of gentlemen. The photo shows the
Worcester first four rowing out on the
Thames. We have a whole collection
of these photographs from Worcester
College and one of the challenges is to
put them all into order.
Has managing the Archive been a
journey of discovery for you?
Absolutely. It’s wonderful. A lot of the
collection still needs to be catalogued
and we are literally opening boxes and
finding undiscovered treasures all the
time. We have photographic archives,
we have original shellac recording
discs going back to the 1920s, we
might come across folders of reports
and we have lots of material that has
been bequeathed to us from other
organisations.
