has been 384.19 million tons (MT) as compared to 364.12 million tons (MT) dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

correspond<strong>in</strong>g period <strong>of</strong> the previous year show<strong>in</strong>g a growth <strong>of</strong> 5.5%. The demand is expected to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease to 550 MT by the end <strong>of</strong> <strong>2014</strong>.<br />

As a develop<strong>in</strong>g economy, <strong>India</strong> faces energy security as a grow<strong>in</strong>g challenge and the coal<br />

production is expected to grow at a CAGR <strong>of</strong> around 7% dur<strong>in</strong>g 2011-12 to 2013-14. The <strong>India</strong>n coal<br />

market is set to witness great boost <strong>in</strong> near future because <strong>of</strong> the ris<strong>in</strong>g government <strong>in</strong>itiatives.<br />

Recently, allocation <strong>of</strong> coal blocks and stake sales <strong>in</strong> PSU are some <strong>of</strong> the major steps that were<br />

taken by the government to boost the production and <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the coal <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

coal. The <strong>India</strong>n coal is characterized by its high ash content (45%) and low sulphur content. The<br />

power sector is the largest consumer <strong>of</strong> coal followed by the iron and steel and cement segments.<br />

Currently, the government enjoys a monopoly <strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g coal with over 90% <strong>of</strong> the production<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g from government-controlled m<strong>in</strong>es. The policy for captive m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> 1993.<br />

This opened the coal sector to private <strong>in</strong>vestment, although no promis<strong>in</strong>g progress has been made <strong>in</strong><br />

the captive coal blocks allotted by the government. Contentious issues, availability <strong>of</strong> geological<br />

data, land acquisition and R&R, environment clearances, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lease, etc. are the primary reasons<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d the dismal production.<br />
