PYP Graduation
Congratulations to Ben, Leah, Yuina, Alexis, Mairi, Alice and Emma on their graduation from the school’s
Primary Years Program: at a Graduation Ceremony held in school on Friday they were presented with their
Graduation Certificates.
Grade 5 class teacher Jane Wallace spoke about the members of the graduating class individually, drawing
on the comments of their classmates. Following a short slide presentation for each graduate, they then
each made a short speech. After the speeches the ceremony was punctuated by the presentation by three
of the graduates of ¥60,000 to UNICEF Hiroshima: the gift, a result of the recent International Festival, was
handed over to Kazue san from the local UNICEF group. Following the presentation of the Graduation Cer-tificates
by Ms Wallace and Ms B, the PYP Coordinator, the Principal, Mark Exton, addressed the graduating
class. After refreshments and photo opportunities, the graduates and their families headed off to the tradi-tional
parent-‐organised Graduation Dinner.
PTA Planning Committee
Following formal consultation with the whole of the parent and teacher community, the PTA Planning
Committee for the 2014-‐15 school year has been confirmed as Takaco Takeno, Tracy McMahan, Miyoko
Shimizu, Jackie Ikegami, Magali Sandmann and Eriko Hird.

After-‐school Activities – September 2014
With just one week to go until the end of this school year it is now time to be thinking about planning for
the next. One of the real successes of this school year has been the introduction of a proper After-‐school
Activities program, on Mondays and Thursdays. We would love to be able to expand the range of activities
on offer but are slightly restricted by the number of teachers we have: of course, this year we have already
been using outside teachers, and this has been very successful too, and so we would like to expand on this
if possible. So, if you know anyone with a skill that might provide a an engaging and enjoyable activity for
students of any age it would be wonderful if you could contact us and make an introduction, so that we can
explore the possibilities. Alternatively, we would also like to hear from parents who feel they could lead an
activity.
Yearbooks
The 2013-‐14 yearbooks have been given out to those who have already ordered
them, and students are already busy signing each other’s.
Crafted by a team of students and teachers, the yearbook is packed with photos
of the school year, up to and including Sports Day, and is a fantastic souvenir of
a memorable school year.
A limited number of yearbooks have been ordered, and there are not many
copies left. To make sure you don't miss out, please return an order form –
available on the Newsletter page of the website -‐ to the school office as soon as
possible!
Board Elections
At an Extraordinary Board of Trustees meeting held last Sunday Peter Goldsbury was elected as the new
Chair of the BoT and both Fuyuko Ruetenik and Jackie Ikegami were elected to the Board of Directors from
the BoT.
Thank You, Eiji Matsuoka
At the Board of Directors’ meeting that followed on from the BoT meeting
a presentation was made to Eiji Matsuoka, who was retiring after almost
6 years of service to the Board of Directors of HIS. Eiji san was first elected
to the BoD from the Ford Motor Company but has stayed on and sup-ported
the school even as the association with Ford has diminished and
disappeared. He chose an English translation of Haruki Murakami’s Nor-wegian
Wood as his retirement gift, and another copy with a bookplate
acknowledging his service will be placed in the school library.
School Calendar
The Calendar page on the website now lists all semester and holiday dates for
the next school year, as well as containing the new Google Calendar.
