Parents’ Coffee Morning (in city) – Thursday, 23 rd October
After-­‐school activities
The first season of Activities starts on Monday, 22 nd September: thank you to Mr B, the Activities Coordina-­tor,
to all staff undertaking activities and, especially to Makkie san who has had to sort out the buses!
The schedule for the Monday buses – 3.30pm and late buses -­‐ has now been sent to all parents with chil-­dren
on the buses: Thursday’s schedule will be coming soon. Please check your arrival times, and as with
every bus schedule change, please arrive a few minutes early at the bus stop and be patient if the bus is
running a few minutes late: traffic anywhere is not an exact science!
Parent Coffee Morning Feedback
Thank you to everyone who came along to yesterday’s Coffee Morning. The
topics covered included the review of the school’s guiding statements (mission,
vision, etc.), caring at HIS, No Heating / No Cooling month, International
Schools’ Assessments (ISAs) and marketing at HIS.
The next Coffee Morning is scheduled to be in the city on the morning of Thurs-­day,
23 rd October: details to follow. Please let me know what topic/s you would
like me to address.
Bullying Resource from Prefecture
Hiroshima Prefecture has sent the school some small cards promoting a new anti-­‐bullying service they have
set up: we will be handing these out to Japanese-­‐speaking students as a service to them. We are only doing
this because we have been asked to by the prefecture, and NOT because we think there is a bullying prob-­lem
at HIS, so please do not be alarmed when your child brings one home.

ISAs
The ISAs will take place as follows:
• Tuesday, 30 th September -­‐ Mathematics and Writing 1 (all students Grades 3-­‐10)
• Wednesday, 1 st October – Reading and Writing 2 (all students Grades 3-­‐10)
• Thursday, 2 nd October – Science (Grades 8 and 10 only)
Please remember students at HIS should not ‘prepare’ for these assessments, since they are consistent with
what students learn on a regular basis: thus, cramming is not appropriate for the ISAs. A good night’s sleep
and a healthy breakfast are the best ways to prepare.
You will receive more information about the ISAs as the assessment period gets closer, and again just
ahead of receiving the report/s on your child/ren, probably at the start of January. More information about
the ISAs can be found at ACER’s website.
Bill Harley Concert
Keep this date free -­‐ the afternoon of Sunday, 9th November -­‐
when HIS is supporting a concert by Grammy-­‐winning children's
musician Bill Harley at Aster Plaza. We are hoping that some of
our students will song with Bill Harley while others volunteer to
help run this event, being held in aid of the 'family house' being
built for Hiroshima University Hospital. Spread the word to eve-­ryone
you know who might be interested.

In order to enable all the ticket revenues to be donated to the
‘family house’ project, the concert organisers are looking for in-­dividual,
family and corporate sponsorship to cover the costs of
staging the event: more information about this opportunity will
be coming out shortly.
HIS Students Performing
Six HIS students will be performing in a forthcoming production of The
Sound of Music to be performed in the city in November: Nina Exton,
Elise Kim, Emma Sandmann, Soshun Shimizu, Harune Smith and Daichi
Watanabe have all been working hard in rehearsals since May, and this
looks set to increase through to the performances.
The performances will be on Saturday and Sunday, 15 th and 16 th Novem-­ber
at Higashi Ward Community Cultural Centre. Tickets will be available
through HIS shortly.

Thanks to all those who came along, listened and exchanged ideas at our first official meeting of the year.
We hope that all parents will try to come along as often as circumstances permit this year.

Details were explained yesterday at the meeting. The PTA explained how and why it operates, and intro-­duced
its proposed calendar for the year. What actually happens depends on the level of response from the
community. We look forward to working with you all for another great year at HIS.

1) Major changes to this year’s calendar. 今 年 度 の 主 要 な 変 更 点
! There will be no Christmas event this year. クリスマスイベントの 中 止
! International Festival will become a biannual event. On years where there is no International Festi-­val,
aimed at the outside community, an in school event will be held to celebrate our diversity and
encourage internationalism. What this will look like will be defined by those who take part.
インターナショナルフェスティバルは 一 年 おきに 行 うことになりました。インターナシ
ョナルフェスティバル( 外 部 向 けの 行 事 )のない 年 には、HIS の 多 様 性 を 祝 い、 国 際 性 を 更
に 養 っていけるような 学 校 内 部 向 けのイベントを 行 います。 内 容 は、ご 参 加 いただける
皆 さんのご 意 見 によっても 変 わってきます。また、ご 意 見 をお 知 らせくださいね。
2) Fundraising changes 資 金 集 めに 関 する 変 更
In place of the fundraising at International Festival, community members may propose targeted fund-­raising
events in support of interest groups within the school community. The PTA will lend it’s know
how, connections and other support to these proposals. Profits raised at these events will be split be-­tween
the proposed cause (eg equipment for a sports team) and the PTA general funds.
インターナショナルフェスティバルに 代 わる 資 金 集 めとして、コミュニティーメンバーによる、
小 さなグループ(クラブ 活 動 など)を 対 象 とした 内 部 イベントを 行 うことができます。PTA は 積
極 的 にそれらのイベントをサポートします。そして、そのイベントの 売 り 上 げは、そのグルー
プと PTA で 分 割 します。

Details of the PTA constitution, and Central PTA Goals and Principles of Operations will be sent to you by e-­mail
early next week. In the absence of objections from a majority of the PTA population by Friday Septem-­ber
26th, these Goals & Principles will be considered adopted. If you have any questions about the content,
please contact any member of the PTA executive committee before then.

Halloween ハロウィン イベント
Halloween will be held on October 31 st from 4:30pm to 9pm 10 月 31 日 ( 金 )4:30pm〜9pm
HIS community members may invite personal guests. お 友 達 のみ 招 待 可 能
\700 per child taking part, plus one large bag of candy for the trick or treat collection. 参 加 費 : 子 供 のみ
700 円 、および、 大 きめのトリックオアトリート 用 のキャンディーやチョコレートの 寄 付
There are many jobs to be done and we really need as many volunteers as possible. Dads, older siblings all
welcome! A PDF will be sent to you shortly, with a list of jobs which need to be done to make the event a
success. It is also available via LINE and in the community FaceBook group. Please let us know as soon as
you can to get your first choice of job!

A dinner option will be provided, but families are responsible for their own food at this event.

となります。
Childcare for PYP students may be available between 3:20pm and 4:30pm for those who wish to stay in
school, providing volunteers can be found to run it.
PYP(G5 以 下 )の 生 徒 が 学 校 終 了 後 からイベント 開 始 時 間 まで 学 校 に 残 りたい 方 のために、チャイル
ドケアの 実 施 を 考 えていますが、 担 当 してくださる 保 護 者 の 方 が 必 要 です。お 手 伝 いいただける

Bonfire Night, Friday, November 7 th ボンファイヤナイト 11 月 7 日 金 曜 日
This year’s Bonfire Night will be held one week after Halloween on Friday November 7 th . Yumiko Barker is
once again leading the team of volunteers who will provide a hot meal to be enjoyed around the bonfire
while watching the fireworks. More details soon, but keep this date free for now!

Lunches Survey ランチに 関 する 調 査
We sent out a survey last week asking your opinions about school lunches. Please fill it in if you have not
already done so, and let us know if you have still not received it.
Whether or not, how and how often lunches might be able to be provided will be determined after examin-­ing
the needs of the community, so we would appreciate it if as many families as possible could respond to
the survey.
