There seems to have been close connections between the Whittle, Polston and Brummett families.
Looking at the Nancy Whittle family, 287 enumeration, it appears probable that
Elizabeth Brummett(age 25) was a Whittle daughter married to a Brummett ( probably deceased )
with her children James( age 9) and Mason ( age 3). It is not likely that she was the mother
of William (age 14), but she could have been his stepmother, if she had been the second wife of a
Brummett.
Nancy could have been a free person of color. In the 1860 Census, there were a Richard Whittle
and a Mahaley Whittle in the household, with both being listed as mulatto.
Could we be of Melungeon descent?

Brummetts were living in Clinton and Cumberland counties of KY prior to 1850.

I listed all the above families in the 1860 census because they are somehow interrelated.
In both census the matter of "color" comes in to play. In 1850, Richard Garret is marked
as "M" for Mullato and in 1860, I believe he is listed as Richard Whitle "M". His age seems to
coincide. I do not know what the "/" means as entered under color in 1860. The mark does not readily
identify what color and only the enumerator knows. Could the Whittle's be Native American?
Nancy, William and Sarah do not know where they were born is a good indication I would think.

In 1777 Fincastle County, Virginia's General Assembly divided Fincastle County into
three parts and created Washington, Montgomery, and Kentucky Counties.
Kentucky was created from Kentucky Co., VIRGINIA
In 1780, Kentucky County was divided into three counties -- Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln.
Within just a few years, nine counties had been carved out of those three:
Jefferson, Fayette, Lincoln, Bourbon, Nelson, Madison, Mercer, Woodford, and Mason
Between 1784 and 1792, people living in those nine counties held ten conventions on the question of
statehood; on 18 December 1789 Virginia's General Assembly passed an act allowing Kentucky to apply for
statehood and on 1 June 1792, those nine counties became a state, with the full consent of Virginia.

Remember that early Kentucky Counties were formed from established Virginia Counties before Kentucky's
statehood in 1792. The last Virginia County to be established was Woodford, which later became Woodford
County, KY. Lincoln, Fayette, and Jefferson were the first three Kentucky Counties carved from Kentucky
County, Virginia. Also Remember that early records may be in a parent county; county boundaries changed
frequently in the early days; and people moved more frequently than we may think.
Consider events that may be recorded in counties other than where they lived, e.g., it was quite common for
people to marry in a neighboring county seat, or in the county seat of the bride's home rather than the groom's
• if the two lived in different counties. So be warned! If at first you don't find them, look for ancestors in a
• neighboring county - or even a neighboring state.

PULASKI Co., KY 1799
was the 27th county formed in Kentucky. It was created by an act of the General Assembly,
December 10, 1798 - to begin June, 1799 - out of territory belonging to Lincoln and Green counties. The
assembly named the county in honor of Count Casimir Pulaski, a Polish patriot and brigadier general in the
U. S. Army during the American Revolution.
Since the creation of Pulaski County, several changes have been made to her boundary.
The first change was when Wayne County was formed and part was taken from Pulaski's territory on
December 18, 1800. When Rockcastle County was created in 1810, another section was taken from it.
Then on February 20, 1825, a part of Pulaski was added to Whitley. Again a part of Pulaski was
added to Wayne, January 6, 1831. The last change was made in 1912, when McCreary was formed
from parts of Pulaski, Wayne, and Whitley.
Pulaski County today is bounded on the east by Rockcastle and Laurel counties, on the south by
McCreary and Wayne, on the west by Russell and Casey and on the north by Lincoln. It lies in the
foothills of the Cumberland Mountains and is drained by the Cumberland and South Fork rivers, Pitman,
White Oak, Buck, Lyne, Cold Water and Fishing creeks. SOMERSET was selected as the name for the
county seat. According to a legend, the county seat was named after Somerset, England. The 40 acres
making up the town were divided into 80 lots, four of which were set aside for a public square. The plan for

the town was not recorded, "owing to neglect.'' until Jan. 16, 1820. On the designated land was a spring, the
town's water system. The path or street by which the spring was reached became the main street of
Somerset - Spring Street (Vine Street).
When it was created, its southern boundary reached the Tennessee line. In the Thirteenth Biennial
Report of the Commission of Agriculture, 1898-99, it was listed as the largest county in the state, with a
length of 40 miles form north to south and 30 miles from east to west. Pulaski is now the third largest
county in the state, having an area of 401,920 acres or 628 square miles.

WAYNE Co., KY 1800
The 43rd county in order of formation, is located in the south-central section of Kentucky along the state
border with Tennessee. Created in 1800 from parts of Pulaski and Cumberland Counties, it was named in
honor of Gen. Anthony WAYNE, Revolutionary War hero.
The county is divided into three distinct physical regions; the Cumberland Plateau, the level plain in the
southeastern part of the county; the Knobs, rolling plains that run through the center of the county; and the
Pennyroyal or Mississippi Plateau, the northwestern part of the county.
Pioneer Long Hunters visited what was to become Wayne County in 1770 and established a camp near
Mill Springs, a few miles north of today's county seat, MONTICELLO. In 1775 Benjamin PRICE built a cabin
and established a camp near Mill Springs. PRICE'S STATION was one of Kentucky's first permanent
settlements. Joshua JONES, one of the most prominent first settlers, came in 1794; Jonathan and James
INGRAM in 1796; Cornelious PHILLIPS in 1798; and Isaac WEST, James SIMPSON, Nicholas LLOYD
and Henry GARDNER in 1799. Between 1800 and 1810 a large number of families arrived.

ADAIR Co., KY 1801
Adair was the 44th Kentucky county formed, created from Green County on December 11, 1801 and
named for General John Adair. It is located in the eastern Pennyrile region and western Appalachian areas
of the state. The county seat is COLUMBIA.
Adair is bordered by Cumberland, Metcalfe, Green, Taylor, Casey and Russell Counties.

ROCKCASTLE Co., KY 1810
was formed in 1810 from parts of Lincoln, Madison and Pulaski Counties. It is located in the Pennyrile and
Eastern Coal Field regions of the state. Mount Vernon, the county seat of Rockcastle County, was founded
in the late eighteenth century and named for George Washington's home. The settlement was originally
known as White Rock, for a local rock formation, but it came to be known as Mount Vernon around 1810.
The Mount Vernon post office opened in 1811. The progression of boundries for Rockcastle County was
ongoing from 1810 till 1836.

RUSSELL Co., KY 1826
was formed DECEMBER 14, 1825 from portions of Adair, Wayne and Cumberland Counties. It was
named in honor of Col. William RUSSELL, a Revolutionary War officer who fought in the battle of
Kings Mountain. The county seat is JAMESTOWN, located on US 127 hwy.
Elevation ranges from 530 to 1140 ft. above sea level.

CLINTON Co., KY 1835
was formed in 1835 from Cumberland and Wayne Counties. It was named after DeWitt Clinton,
a former New York City mayor and Governor of New York. Most records were lost in a courthouse
fire in 1864. Another fire in 1980 destroyed some records. County seat is ALBANY.

formed in 1912 from parts of Pulaski, Wayne, and Whitley Counties. County seat is Whitley City.
