Luncheon Talk
By DG Ken Khoo
the urgent need in development of Rotary is not more clubs
nor larger clubs…it’s the evolution of of a truer & stronger
philosophy. He then quoted Confucius from the Analects that
gave steps to develop oneself successfully, which is
Sincerity…essential to achieve peace & success.
DG Ken Khoo speaking...
He began by reminding the club that its 76 year old and that
rotary must have touched thousand of people in our
community in this period, and that Paul Harris once said that
DG & 1st lady
He asked all Rotarians to uphold the principle of promoting
ETHICAL PRACTICES and advocates the TRUTH and what is
FAIR to ALL CONCERN, ready to offer hands of
friendship/fellowship, spread goodwill an share what is
beneficial….and while we enjoy our fellowship be mindful of
the needs of others, lend a hand to the needy and sow the
seeds of love. He ask us not to be kiasu (from a saying in
Chinese).
President thanking DG
He ended by saying R.I. has chosen the shortest month
which has just past as World Understanding Month and
wished us PEACE
FROM THE DESKTOP OF A ROTARIAN
GEMS FROM THE WEB
The proposal for pre-charging some amount of our weekly
lunch costs has created deep controversy and contrarian
views over the past months, culminating in verbal vitriolic
hurled across the ether via email. Emotions have been high
as members debated opposing sides of the proposal with
passion.
While dissent is healthy, at times arguments and comments
became less helpful as anger appeared to be simmering
close to the surface of some exchanges of opinions.
I suppose it is natural for folks to get emotional and sarcastic
when passionate. However it is sad when we allow our
personal differences and differences of opinions to clearly
divide the Club. As respected leaders of society and
Rotarians, we should be open minded in looking at all views.
Then in our consideration of the options, we should subscribe
to the final vote, whichever way it turned. It is key that we
close ranks at the end to ensure the future success of the
Club is guaranteed.
I came across a verse (entitled “Different Drums…”) which
admonishes us to accept, celebrate and take advantage of
diversity, both in character and viewpoints. Perhaps we forget
that diversity enriches the gene pool for future survival of the
species. After all, if we all subscribed like robots to the same
thoughts, then there would not be any future enrichment and
growth of the Club.
This verse is followed by some observations on how geese
have evolved to cooperate as a species. It has wonderful
reminders of how we should work together as Rotarians.
Well, at least I think so. You decide after you peruse both,
okay?
So I hope you will read articles below and enjoy…
And in understanding me, you might come to prize my
differences from you, and far from seeking to change them,
you might preserve and even nurture those differences.
LESSONS FROM GEESE
(Author unknown, downloaded from
www.inspirationalmail.com)
Fact 1: As each goose flaps its wings it creates “uplift"
for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation,
the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if
each bird flew alone.
Lesson 1: People who share a common direction and sense
of community can get where they are going quicker and
easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
DIFFERENT DRUMS AND DIFFERENT DRUMMERS
(Author of verse is unknown, downloaded from
www.inspirationalmail.com)
If I do not want what you want, please try not to tell me that
my want is wrong.
Or if I believe other than you, at least pause before you
correct my view.
Or if my emotion is more than yours, or less, given the same
circumstances, try not to ask me to feel more weakly or
strongly.
Or yet if I act in some way other than your design for action,
let me be.
I do not, for the moment at least, ask you to understand me.
That will come only when you are willing to give up changing
me into a copy of you.
I may be your spouse, your employee, your child, your
parent, or your friend. If you will allow me any of my own
wants, or emotions, or beliefs, or actions, then you open
yourself, so that some day these ways of mine might not
seem so wrong, and might finally appear to you as right- for
me.
To put up with me is the first step to understanding me. Not
that you embrace my ways as right for you, but that you are
no longer irritated or disappointed with me for my seeming
waywardness.
Fact 2: When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly
feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly
moves back into formation to take advantage of the
lifting power of the bird in front of it.
Lesson 2: If we have as much common sense as a goose, we
stay in formation with those headed where we want to go.
We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.
Fact 3: When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into
the formation and another goose flies to the point
position.
Lesson 3: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and
sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent
on each others' skills, capabilities, and unique arrangements
of gifts, talents, or resources.
Fact 4: Geese flying in formation honk to encourage
those up front to keep up their speed.
Lesson 4: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging.
In groups where there is encouragement, the production is
much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by
one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core
of others) is the quality of honking we seek.
Fact 5: When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down,
two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to
help protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to
fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation
or catch up with the flock.
Lesson 5: If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand
by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.
R.I.PRESIDENT VISIT CYPRUS
(Biland Sadek, Cyprus editor of RI District 2450's magazine
submitted by PDG Dato’ Mus via email on 28th February 2006)
RI President Stenhammar met with Greek and Turkish
Cypriots during his visit. After the intercity meeting, Rotarians
held a press conference to discuss Rotary's role in fostering
peace and understanding.
"[We have demonstrated] …the commitment of Rotary to
support people of goodwill to work together under Rotary for
the benefit of their communities, irrespective of differences in
religion, language, and culture," adds Strongylos.
Rotarians are among a growing number of residents helping
end the mistrust that has divided the Mediterranean island of
Cyprus into ethnic Greek and Turkish enclaves. So, when RI
President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar visited with them at an
intercity meeting in Nicosia last month, members of the
country's 18 Rotary clubs celebrated the event as recognition
of their humanitarian and peace-building efforts.
"It was indeed a great boost for Rotary in Cyprus and our
region, and we thank President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar for
his visit," says John Strongylos, district governor of Rotary
International District 2450 and a member of the Rotary Club of
Kyrenia.
For centuries, Cyprus has been a meeting point of southern
European and Middle Eastern peoples and cultures. But for
much of the last 43 years, inter-communal violence and
tension have thwarted hopes of a united, multicultural nation.
The cooperation between Greek and Turkish Cypriot
Rotarians, therefore, offers a glimmer of hope for the rest of
the polarized country, some Rotary leaders say.
According to Strongylos and Doros Jeropoulos, a fellow
Cypriot and a past district governor, local Rotarians worked
with senior Rotary leaders to ensure that the political divisions
in Cyprus didn't split the island's Rotary clubs along ethnic
lines.
Two of the 18 clubs are in the Turkish sector, which is still
politically separated from the rest of the country. So the unity
of Rotary clubs in Cyprus is an achievement that has
empowered Rotarians to lead peace efforts by example,
Jeropoulos and Strongylos say.
"The visit of the president I can say played a very important
part in strengthening [our working together], because it was
clear to everybody that all Rotarians were indeed united, and
we thank him for this," notes Jeropoulos.
Jeropoulos explains that despite political differences, the
Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities are now in
communication.
"They visit each other, and political parties, cultural
associations, youth associations, [and so forth] are trying to
work together on many issues," he says. "We are trying to
put on the side any issues that hurt and so far we [have]
managed to stay on the Rotary path alone."
The level of cooperation among local Rotarians across
Cyprus's social and political fissures has impressed Past RI
President Luis Vicente Giay, who previously helped to foster
peace and understanding among members of the Greek and
Turkish Cypriot Rotary clubs.
"It was an immense achievement for Rotary," says Giay. "The
United Nations and the government are trying to link both
[sectors] but haven't been able to. Cypriot Rotarians, however,
have set aside their differences and set an example for the
rest of the country."
According to Giay, Cypriot Rotarians may be on the verge of
replicating the peace achievement of Past RI President James
L. Bomar Jr., who in 1980 helped defuse an explosive border
dispute between Argentina and Chile.
During the 3-5 January trip, Stenhammar also met with toplevel
political leaders, including acting President Demetris
Christofias and Nicosia Mayor Michael Zampellas.
Additionally, he inaugurated a US$200,000 umbilical cord
blood bank sponsored by 10 local Rotary clubs.
"It's the largest project ever funded by The Rotary Foundation
on the island of Cyprus," says Giay, who is the Foundation's
trustee-chair elect.
