News and Messages…
International Fraud Awareness Week and NHS Fraud Awareness Month
This year’s International Fraud Awareness week (12-17 November) coincides with NHS Fraud
Awareness Month (FAM), which takes place in November, across South Yorkshire. FAM aims
to educate anyone who uses or works in the NHS about how damaging fraud can be and
highlights some simple things that can be done to stop it, particularly at a local level. The
work of the Local Counter Fraud Specialist and NHS Protect staff has already saved the NHS
tens of millions of pounds and led to many fraudsters being prosecuted. However, to assist
these efforts to reduce losses to fraud, we need the help and support of every honest person
who works in and uses the NHS. The aim is to spread a simple message: ‘Fraud is a drain on
valuable NHS resources and will not be tolerated’. By knowing how to recognise and report
any fraud that does occur, we can all help to ensure that the public funds of the NHS are
spent on patient care. Types of fraud and offenders vary. Those who steal from the NHS
through fraud may be patients who avoid paying prescription charges by falsely claiming
exemption from fees, staff claiming pay for shifts they did not work, or contractors falsifying
records of NHS work. The result for the honest patient, will be the same; resources lost to
fraud delay patient care and in the worst case could lead to someone dying earlier…..it is a
serious as that!
Mental Health in the Workplace Skills for Line Managers
A two-day Train the Trainer course for those wishing to deliver the Mental Health in the
Workplace: Skills for Line Managers, takes place on 29 and 30 November, from 9.30am
to 5pm at Fusion @ Magna. Managing mental health in the workplace is a crucial skill
for line managers. Early recognition and knowing what practical steps to take can mean
that employees get help when they need it and minimise the effect on productivity of an
organisation. This course is primarily aimed at those in managerial roles or who wish to use

the learning to support employees and colleagues. Some experience of workplace issues and
a commitment to supporting those experiencing mental health at work is needed. For further
information, or to book a place, contact: Annette Seyboth on 01709 255875 or
email: annette.seyboth@rotherham.nhs.uk
NHS Constitution
Recommendations for strengthening the NHS Constitution have been outlined by the
NHS Future Forum to the Secretary of State. The Future Forum has identified three ‘essential
steps’ for the NHS Constitution to make a difference in the NHS: awareness must be raised
dramatically among public, patients and staff - for staff, this means helping them really
understand what the Constitution means for their everyday work; the Constitution must be
clearer about what happens when the NHS falls short of people’s rights or expectations; and
the content needs updating and reinforcing in specific areas.
