In Ward 2 the cleaning of patient equipment was of a high st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>and</strong><br />
equipment was visibly clean. Staff should take advice on the correct<br />
storage of laryngoscope blades which were incorrectly stored out of<br />
their packaging.<br />
Ward 1 achieved a partial compliant score; staff practice fell below the<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ard expected. Cleaning issues were identified in relation to a<br />
dressing trolley, blood pressure cuff, ANTT trays <strong>and</strong> mats <strong>and</strong><br />
particularly the cleaning of a commode, were the practice observed<br />
could lead to cross contamination of bacteria. (See recommendation<br />
14). Damage was noted to the frame work of an IV trolley <strong>and</strong> patient<br />
hoist; bed pans <strong>and</strong> urinals were not stored correctly. Throughout the<br />
visit a used bed pan, partly covered with paper tissue, was observed on<br />
top of the bedpan washer.<br />

20. The trust <strong>and</strong> individual staff have a collective responsibility<br />
to ensure that staff knowledge is kept up to date; equipment<br />
is clean <strong>and</strong> in good repair.<br />
