Art Exhibit:
State House, Boston
Who could have imagined, when Riverside Arts
began, that within five years of its inception it would be
exhibiting art in the State House in Boston? It would not
have happened without the keen artistic eye and heart of
Senator Stanley Rosenberg, an art enthusiast. He invited
Riverside Arts to fill his four State House offices with
works by its students. The artists are proud and excited
about the exhibition. Annette Helgerson beamed, “Seeing
my art on display is great, and I cannot believe it will be
shown in Boston.”
This opportunity at the State House and a generous
donation of oil paints from Royal Talens inspired a project
called “The Cobra Painters,” named for Cobra Paints
made by Royal Talens. Fourteen Riverside Artists met for
two hours every day for three weeks to learn the art of oil
painting. Coralie Donohue said about her experience, “I
like working in art and learning the techniques. I enjoy
learning how to paint mountains, birds, water, and sky.”
Usually the artists have class for one hour per week.
Meeting for eight hours per week allowed them to reach
a greater level of concentration and depth in their art, as
reflected in this comment from Mike O’Neill, “When I am
doing art I lose myself in the painting. Sometimes I can
see my picture on the white canvas before I paint it.”
The art, an eclectic mix of 50 oil paintings, watercolors,
drawings, and collages representing the fascinating range
of personality and character of the Riverside artists, is on
view from January 14 - March 17.
Other sponsors, like Eastmont Framing, amplified the
beauty of the art with frames. Canson donated fine art
supplies like paint brushes. TD Insurance’s generosity
enabled the guests to make the roundtrip to Boston for
the reception.
The reception on February 8th celebrated the
accomplishments of the artists and reflected the spirit
of cooperation which is a core strength of Riverside
Industries. Seventy people including artists, family, staff,
sponsors, and a Northampton Daily Hampshire Gazette
reporter and photographer all boarded a Peter Pan Bus for
a festive ride to the State House.
Senator Stanley Rosenberg and Adam Goodwin talk about
some of the art.
The main reception took place in Nurses Hall, a grand
historic space capable of holding a hundred people. Here,
the group shared lunch, enjoyed a speaking program,
and mingled with members of the legislature and State
House staff. Smaller groups took turns touring Senator
Rosenberg’s offices to view the art and meet the Senator’s
staff who all expressed their appreciation for the colorful
art brightening their work space.
The art, an eclectic mix of 50 oil paintings, watercolors,
drawings, and collages representing the fascinating
range of personality and character of the Riverside
artists, is on view from January 14 - March 17.
The entire project was a wonderful adventure, full of
challenges and rewards. It has encouraged the Riverside
artists to new heights and brought even more excitement
to the program.
Riverside Industries would like to thank Senator
Rosenberg for this wonderful opportunity to show the true
spirit of our artists, and for Riverside to join with members
of the State House for this heartfelt celebration in honor of
Riverside artists and Riverside Industries as a whole.
A special thank you to our Art Reception Sponsors: Canson | Royal Talens | TD Insurance | Eastmont Framing
News to Report
Deb Thomas,
President
In the spirit of keeping our mission fresh,
Riverside has embarked upon a venture which will
guide our activities over the next few years. I want to
thank all of you who participated.. The final tallying
of the results is not complete, but there were two
organizational themes that rose to the top. One is
reinventing the work that people do at One Cottage
Street. The other is identifying alternative financial
means to support our mission.
To begin tackling the first objective, Riverside has
engaged three master’s level Isenberg School of
Management interns who will dedicate their entire final semester to this project.
The second theme of enriching our financial resources will take the form of a Major Gifts
campaign. The specifics of this fund drive are unclear with the target of it being finalized this
spring.
The care and advocacy that the community gives to Riverside may be measured in our every
day experiences: the excitement of learning, the delight in friendships, the pride of being a part
of something bigger than ourselves, to name a few. As the year unfolds we hope that you will
join us in these two ventures.
Receives Highest Marks
for the 10th consecutive time
Riverside Industries, Inc. received the highest possible recognition, (three-year accreditation)
from the international Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This
survey marks the tenth consecutive time Riverside has received this award.
The CARF team highlighted several areas in which Riverside excels. Among some of the noted
strengths were the high level of satisfaction with the services that Riverside’s committed staff
provides; the plethora of art, artists, and exhibitions in our physical space and surrounding community
arenas; our dedicated and caring board, management and employees; our commitment to
community integration; our well-maintained 160,000 square foot historic building.
Deborah Thomas, Riverside’s President, stated that the evaluation process is extensive. It
includes professional surveyors’ meetings with the people we support, employees, business
partners, funding sources, families, and guardians affiliated with Riverside. The agency is evaluated
from many different perspectives in order to determine the quality of service the agency
provides. Thomas added, “Riverside was awarded this distinction because of the people who give
so generously of themselves each and every day. I’m pleased that their dedication and hard work
have been recognized and applauded by an internationally renowned certification organization.”
Partnership:
Muth Associates, Inc.
Pop Quiz: What do the following relationships have in common?
• Bruce Willis & Demi Moore
• Aqua Net Hairspray & Big Hair
• Milli Vanilli
• Doug Muth of Muth Associates, Inc. & Riverside Industries, Inc.
If you answered that they all began in the 80s, you’re right! Give yourself
extra credit if you also knew that the only partnership still going strong
is that of Doug Muth and Riverside Industries. Muth Associates, Inc.
of Springfield, Massachusetts, was established in 1963. President,
Doug Muth, forged a relationship with Riverside Industries’ production
department in the 1980s.
A leader in the design and distribution of custom packaging materials
and systems, Muth called on Riverside to help meet his assembly and
packaging needs. And he is still calling us today! Working on a variety of
contracts over the past 30 years, Riverside’s Production Department has
worked with the use of specialty boxes, bags, and cases.
The Department continues to see an average of four long-running
contracts per year. Ron LaFleur, Riverside’s Production Consultant,
reports that “Muth Associates is a very significant company with which
the production department does business--in longevity of relationship,
consistency of contract work, and financial benefit to the Department.”
LaFleur isn’t the only one to recognize the significance of Riverside’s
relationship with Muth Associates. Employment Supervisor, Nick
Isherwood, stated that “Muth’s contracts are the most beneficial for
our clients. So many people are working on them now. What once was
exclusive to a few clients is now available to many, because people have
worked hard to learn the job!”
Isherwood continued to explain that because the partnership between
Muth Associates and Riverside Industries has continued for so long, the
Production Department has been able to focus on job specific trainings
tailored to repeat contracts. This has allowed the department to increase
the overall number of employees available to work on more complex
assembly and packaging contracts, thus benefitting both Riverside
employees and Muth Associates.
It is precisely this long-standing and reciprocal relationship that has
kept Doug Muth connected to Riverside through the years. “It’s a nice
feeling. You can get something done and help other people at the same
time!” For more information, please visit www.muthassociates.com
