PLANNING COMMITTEE
This Advisory Committee to the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District
meets quarterly on the second Thursday in January, April, July, and
October at 7:00 pm at the Oak Park Community Center, 1000 N. Kanan
Road. The public is invited to attend these meetings, which are held to
keep the community involved and informed of such items as park planning,
development, and recreation programming in Oak Park.

ABOUT THE COVER
The park ranger program at Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District
has expanded its services to include bike patrols. The Oak Park Recreation
and Park News cover shows Senior Park Ranger Jerry DeRosa, along with
Ranger Steve Williams, Ranger Larry Dolley, and Ranger Jim Rosales who
was the training officer for this program.
The program goal is to create a safe and positive environment within the
Rancho Simi Recreation and Park district’s arroyo pathways, park greenbelts,
off-road open areas and recreation facilities. The cities of Thousand Oaks
and Simi Valley Police Department have similar programs. This program
will enable us to improve the District’s already excellent park and recreation
facilities by providing a higher level of service to the community.
Three of the District’s rangers received special training in the unique
aspects of bicycle patrol. The rangers learned the anatomy of the bike, bike
fitting, minor bike repairs, field of vision, cognitive skills, bike handling,
obstacle avoidance, road hazards, off-road riding, climbing, descending,
patrol procedures, arrest techniques, and bike transportation.
The second part of the training involved riding an obstacle course on
asphalt and cement, including specialty riding techniques on those surfaces.
Rangers went out on trails to learn riding techniques needed on dirt, rocks,
curves and more. Finally, rangers rode the Arroyo Simi bike path. Watch for
the bike patrol rangers when visiting parks and trails.
