ABOUT THE COVER
The park ranger program at Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District
has expanded its services to include bike patrols. The Oak Park Recreation
and Park News cover shows Senior Park Ranger Jerry DeRosa, along with
Ranger Steve Williams, Ranger Larry Dolley, and Ranger Jim Rosales who
was the training officer for this program.
The program goal is to create a safe and positive environment within the
Rancho Simi Recreation and Park district’s arroyo pathways, park greenbelts,
off-road open areas and recreation facilities. The cities of Thousand Oaks
and Simi Valley Police Department have similar programs. This program
will enable us to improve the District’s already excellent park and recreation
facilities by providing a higher level of service to the community.
Three of the District’s rangers received special training in the unique
aspects of bicycle patrol. The rangers learned the anatomy of the bike, bike
fitting, minor bike repairs, field of vision, cognitive skills, bike handling,
obstacle avoidance, road hazards, off-road riding, climbing, descending,
patrol procedures, arrest techniques, and bike transportation.
The second part of the training involved riding an obstacle course on
asphalt and cement, including specialty riding techniques on those surfaces.
Rangers went out on trails to learn riding techniques needed on dirt, rocks,
curves and more. Finally, rangers rode the Arroyo Simi bike path. Watch for
the bike patrol rangers when visiting parks and trails.
Friends have to
stop friends from
doing drugs!
Not too long ago it
became increasingly clear
that heroin use was on the
rise in many parts of the
country, including Ventura County.
As overdoses and deaths increased, families
stepped forward and urged the Community Partners to do
something to stop the devastation. A task force was formed
which developed responsive strategies for implementation.
Throughout the proceedings it became clear that drug and
alcohol abuse have profound negative consequences for
users and also for their family, friends and fellow community
members. It also became clear that people abuse drugs for
different reasons.
that can and want to help. There’s help for drug and
alcohol abuse, mental illness, depression, heroin use, family
violence and more.
YAMUNA BODY ROLLING
New
(DEEP TISSUE STRETCH)
Yamuna Body Rolling is a massage and a workout that tones your body
all in the same session. It’s a new type of stretching that creates flexibility
and long term strengthening for a balanced body. It incorporates core
strengthening and deep tissue release to improve alignment throughout the
entire musculoskeletal system. Students will learn YBR
using special 6-10” balls especially designed to work on
the “fascial net” which is connective tissue that is found
throughout the body. Specific routines and techniques will
be taught using the ball to stimulate bone, and traction
the full length of tight tissue and muscles that often cause
pain, chronic tension and inefficient movement patterns
throughout the body.
Not to be confused with using a foam roller, participants
learn to use the ball with specific routines based on the
logic of the body to realign muscle imbalances in the
shoulder and hips, and spine while returning the body to
its optimal balance.
Body Rolling can be added to your exercise regimen as a
“recovery” program for all forms of training and to improve
bone density, improve performance and prevent injury. All
levels of fitness welcome. (Equipment available). If you
have YBR balls already, please bring to class. Students must provide
their own yoga mat and a larger size towel. Note: All participants must
able to get up and down from floor level without assistance.) Instructor:
Aggie Winston, Certified YBR and Pilates Practitioner has been teaching
restorative forms of exercise for over 12 years in the Conejo Valley
