Road safety and the older driver
1
Crash patterns for older drivers are significantly different to
those of other age groups. For drivers aged 80 and over, the
most common crashes are intersection crashes, where the older
driver is turning right across traffic, and crashes where the older
driver drives off the road.
Studies show that many older drivers compensate for their agerelated
decline in driving competency by self restricting and
limiting their driving, for example, by driving in local areas or
avoiding complex, difficult situations.
