The 5-channel EM5 horizontal
roller drier is generally used in
plants with a high output capacity
and is designed to meet the
space-saving needs common
to many ceramic production
plants. With the advent of everlarger,
ever-faster presses the
use of multi-layer driers represents
a big plus for a modern
ceramic company. By having, in
fact, several overlapping layers
– which occupy no more floor
space than a single-layer drier
– it is possible to increase tile
drying capacity by thousands of
square metres. Horizontal driers
suit the needs of the ceramic
industry perfectly, combining
performance, which has always
been outstanding on all Sacmi
machines, with upgraded userfriendliness.
In designing these machines
Sacmi has focused a great deal
of effort on improving the manmachine
interface and reducing
heat and electrical energy requirements.
Adjustments are now needed
less often and are simpler.
Maintenance times have been
reduced too.
The machine has a modular
structure: the standard configuration
consists of four or more
zones, each independent from a
thermo-hygrometric standpoint.
The various channels are fed by
load/unload elevators.

The roller drive system
consists of a series of invertercontrolled
gear motors. Rollers
are driven by pairs of helical
toothed gears; oil-bath type
lubrication is the most common
solution but sintered metal
bevel gears with no lubrication
requirements are also available.
Rollers are made of carbon
steel, straightened and
heat-treated to stabilize
that straightness. They are
manufactured according to
extremely strict tolerances in
order to ensure maximum order
and alignment of outgoing tiles
(necessary to ensure proper
operation of the unloading
machine).
Transfer roller units are placed
at the two ends of the drier.
They are powered by their own
gear motors and accelerate the
product into the drier and away
from it in synchronization with
the elevator loading/unloading
operations that distribute the
material onto the layers.
The drier structure also
includes access points for
adjustment and/or maintenance
zones and the electrical system
includes emergency production
line shutdown pushbuttons.

production lines where working
conditions are particularly
harsh (high temperatures)
and an outgoing material
temperature of around 50/60
°C is required, the drier has
to provide, in addition to
the normal drying cycle,
subsequent cooling to bring
the material down to the low
temperatures needed at the
next stage of the process.
Cooling zone length must be
decided on a case-by-case
basis as per contract-defined
working conditions.

The STRATOS 5 control
system is designed to manage
5 horizontal drier layers.
STRATOS 5 lets the user
detect and adjust drier process
variables such as temperature
and speed. The main purpose
of the control system is to dry
the tiles according to the drying
programs. Operators can select
and load any drying program as
and when required. The system
also allows users to collect and
store consumption/production
data.
The STRATOS 5 H.M.I (Human
Machine Interface) features a
sequence of display screens
that enables the operator to
perform all the tasks needed to
operate the drier. The interface
is a touch-screen monitor,
thus making the H.M.I simple
and intuitive. Each layer has
its own independent set of
roller motors. This allows the
operator to exclude a selected
layer from loading operations
or, if necessary, stop it without
affecting any of the other
layers.
Each set of roller motors
is inverter-controlled;
the speed of each roller
set is automatically and
independently adjusted as per
settings. Motion control of each
drier roller set (managed by the
same inverter) is effected via a
magnetic sensor and toothed
wheel; this provides motion
control for each of the drier
rollers.

Process air circulation

The ducts that feed the air to
the blowers are inside the drier
while exhaust air extraction
takes place in special lateral
spaces opposite the infeed
ones.
The elements used to deliver
the tile drying air have been
designed according to highly
sophisticated fluid dynamic
calculation methods, thus
providing maximum efficiency
for convective heat exchange
and reducing the intake of air
to be heated for re-circulation.
The outcome is significant
energy savings and therefore
lower costs.
By re-circulating as much
heated air as possible the
amount of incoming air that
needs to be heated is reduced
to an absolute minimum; again,
the result is considerable
energy savings.
Moreover, hot air from the kiln
cooling area can be used to
lower specific consumption
even further.
Different types of fuel can be
used (natural gas, LPG, coal
gas, diesel oil, etc.).
Special standby curves can be
set if tile feeding is interrupted.
