special events and networking opportunities Innovative Vehicle Design Wayne/Oakland Halls Tuesday – Wednesday, October 19 – 20 10:00 am – 6:00 pm 34 Square One Students Sponsored by SAE Convergence 2010 Convergence 2010 features an expanded exhibition of Square One’s exciting projects for youth, designed to stimulate innovative thinking through design and engineering. The Innovative Vehicle Design (IVD) program is a premiere example of the unique projects we design and fund. IVD often unites high school teams with corporate partners around the design and building of a one-person, electric vehicle. This year’s unique IVD challenge involves several teams building a hybrid electric vehicle. Square One board members developed a new and unique high school focused hybrid manual for this competition. Built as an innovation, not racing competition challenge, the IVD program allows each team a 10-month build window where students assume the leadership for all portions of the planning and development. “Our goal is to ensure that today’s youth is being exposed to the exciting world of relevant, cutting-edge science and technology,” says Karl Klimek, Executive Orchestrator of Square One. “We’re a hands-on organization in the truest sense. From building school computer labs from the microchip up, to testing electric vehicles engineered in the classroom, Square One is granting students unique, real-world opportunities and offering forward-thinking corporations the opportunity to help shape the next generation workforce. Our corporate partners love working within the creative and entrepreneurial spirit we have developed.” Corporate support may include professional coaching from 2 to 4 engineers and a $5,000 financial contribution that is matched by Square One. The $10,000 budget per team is spent using 90% of the funds for the car, and 10% to be put toward an Engineering Ambassadorship where these high school students positively influence middle-school students in their districts. Feel free to stop by and discover the innovative thinking and engineering that is embedded into each of the vehicles.
