hen I first heard about the
Spotted Cow trip to southcentral
Wisconsin in mid-
July I thought, what fun. The trip
description Mary Derks created
sounded great and I knew from past
experience from Tour of Lakes that she
was an excellent trip planner. So I
signed Stan and I up.
Thursday night as planned. The trip
started at 8:30 Friday morning and
ended on Monday afternoon. Four
whole days of cycling, nothing could
be better. We got into Spring Green
late, so we didn't see much of this"one
cow" town. What we did discover later
was that Frank Lloyd Wright had a
beautiful house just outside of town
which could be toured. If we had
taken some time to research Spring
Green we would have known to arrive
earlier on Thursday as some others did.
Oh well, live and learn.
Friday morning came and off we went
to the ride start. Unfortunately huge
dark clouds were looming. Mary
Yes, it's that time again----time for a
new club jersey design! Our plan has
been to offer a new design every three
years or so, which makes next year the
time for a new one!
Some of you may recall that we held a
jersey design contest for our current
jersey. We will be doing that again this
year as well. The contest will be open
to all members, with the designs being
voted on by you, the members! So, get
your creative juices flowing and start
thinking about a snazzy new design
for you and your fellow club members
to wear next season, then watch for an
decided to delay the start and we
waited out the storm in the high
school. We spent time introducing
ourselves and sharing anything extra
of our choosing. Some things were
funny, something about keeping
secrets, and others factual, many of the
participants are current ride leaders.
The rain passed after about 1 ½ hours,
and we were off to our evening
destination of New Glarus with
surprisingly little road spray. Within a
few hours the sun was out and so were
the hills; happily flying down one side
to grunt and groan up the oppo sing
side. We passed beautiful farms and
opportunity to vote for your favorite
design!
We will be forming a jersey committee
and are looking for interested
members to serve on it. Some of the
committee functions include setting
up the design contest, selecting a
jersey manufacturer, marketing the
jersey, processing orders, and
distribution. If you are interested in
helping out, we'd love to have you! For
WOW! The club recently held its
annual Weekend on Wheels (WOW)
ride in Winona and Julie Kosbab, WOW
Coordinator, did not disappoint! She
promised beautiful bluff-top scenery,
air-conditioned apartment-style
dorms, and a delicious meal on the
lakeshore and she wasn't bluffing!
Nice job, Julie!
The ride, our 28th annual, drew
approximately 125 people from the
metro area, outstate MN, Wisconsin,
Illinois, and South Dakota. While many
riders were veteran WOW participants
(with a few riders having ridden most,
if not all, previous WOW's), a
surprisingly large percentage were
first-time WOW riders. It was great to
see so many new people there, as their
enthusiasm brings new energy to the
event!
Thanks to everyone who participated.
The gathering of friends, both old and
new, made the weekend very
enjoyable!
On a separate note, you may recall
seeing a survey in last month's
WEATHER NEWS: The summer so far
has been warmer and drier than
normal, with July two degrees above
normal, the warmest month above
normal since November. With less rain,
and only six 90-degree days so far, it
has been fairly good for biking and not
many rides have needed to be
cancelled.
SAFETY MANTRA: Your editor has
come up with a safe biking saying
which he has not shared with the
public yet: Helmets Always,
Headphones Never. Use if you dare.
TATER TOUR, which had been
promoted in this newsletter for
September, has been cancelled.
ACCIDENTS: In Wisconsin during 2007,
there were 1200 vehicles crashes
involving bicyclists but only 11
bicyclists died.. According to the
League of American Bicyclists, 773
bicyclists were killed in crashes in 2006
nationwide.
BIKE POWER: In June, the U.S.
Conference of Mayors adopted a
resolution to more fully integrate
bicycling into society. It was co-
Mpls Mayor R.T. Rybak
sponsored by Mpls Mayor R.T. Rybak,
among others. It notes that "more than
200 cities throughout the U.S.,
representing more than 35 million
people, have committed to
implementing bicycle-friendly action
plans" According to the resolution, the
U.S. could save 462 million gallons of
gas per year if Americans increased by
just half a percentage point the
number of trips they make by bicycle.
Due in part to a $1.2 million
federal grant, some roads in
Roseville, Falcon Heights, and
Lauderdale will get safer biking and
walking connections, with
construction supposed to start next
summer. They include: Fairview from
Larpenteur to County B2, Larpenteur
from Fairview to Fulham, and Gortner
from Larpenteur to the intercampus
bike route between the St. Paul and
Mpls campuses of the U of M. This will
connect Rosedale to the St. Paul
campus, and via the transitway, to the
Mpls campus.
PARIS FASHION: About 20,000 Velib
bicycles are in service in Paris, easy to
rent and fairly affordable, with more
than 1400 self-service rental stations.
They are a big success, with 27 million
trips in the first year, many of them for
daily commutes. Significant problems:
traffic congestion, safety, vandalism,
and theft - at least 3000 have been
stolen, twice the original estimates.
The three-speed Velib, specially
designed and built by a French
company, weighs nearly 50 pounds
and each costs $3460. Other major
cities, including American ones, are
exploring similar projects.
RIDE DESCRIPTIONS on the TCBC web
site or in the TCBC Activity News give
important details about rides. Be sure
to check these descriptions carefully.
They may list special situations or
conditions that apply to a ride, and
they are the most accurate description
of TCBC rides.
AVERAGE SPEEDS The speeds listed
in the ride key are average speeds
maintained for the entire ride, not
the minimum or maximum speeds.
To maintain the average ride speed,
riders will ride far faster and far slower
at times. While not required, a cyclecomputer
is helpful to judge average
speed. In some situations, leaders may
feel the conditions justify a slower
average minimum speed.
FASTER OR SLOWER RIDERS or self–
sufficient riders are welcome on
all daylight rides, but the type and
degree of leader support depends on
the ride type.
RIDE LENGTH Be sure to check the
ride description on the TCBC web site
or Activity News for the distance of the
ride. There may be longer or shorter
rides of any ride type. Ride length is
OUR CLUB The Twin Cities Bicycling
Club (TCBC) is the Twin Cities’ largest
recreational cycling club. We typically
appeal to adult, intermediate cyclists
who like group riding but don’t race.
We ride mostly on low-traffic roads
and use maps. We generally don’t
mark our routes or sag our rides. Please
use the ride key to choose rides suited
to your abilities.
HELMETS: Must be properly worn and
fastened by everyone on all TCBC rides
and must be ANSI or Snell-approved.
TOOLS: Carry these on your bike: tire
levers, a pump, spare tube, patch kit.
WATER: You should drink water
before you ride, and carry water with
you on the ride, drinking frequently.
AT THE RIDE START: Arrive early and
allow time to get yourself and your
equipment ready, sign the registration
sheet, and (if you are not a member)
pay the leader the trip fees. All bike
trips list the time the trip actually
departs from the start. There will be a
briefing by the leader.
DAY TRIP FEES: NO CHARGE for TCBC
members & families, $2.00 for nonmembers,
$4.00 for each non-member
family. Pre-registration isn’t necessary
unless stated.
MOUNTAIN BIKE (MB) RIDES
Mountain bikes are required for MB
rides. Protective glasses are highly
recommended. MB rides may require
more protective clothes. Muddy
LEADER SPEED Leaders may choose
to ride slower than the Minimum
Average Riding Speed on any ride.
Leaders may choose to ride faster than
the Average Riding Speed on all A and
A/B Rides.
LEADER SUPPORT will be available
only to those who are riding at or
above the minimum average riding
speed on B and B/C rides. Leader
support will be available to all riders
on C rides.
terrain may be common. There will
probably be NO water available, so
bring two full bottles. Experienced
TCBC road riders new to mountain
biking should select MB rides at
least one Ride Type lower than they
normally ride “on-road.”
GATEWAY TRAIL: Finally finished along
Hwy. 36 through North St. Paul. They
did a nice job building a new trail,
including passing under the Margaret
Street bridge over 36 - good wide
tunnel with bike paths on both sides
leading up to Margaret if bikers so
choose. It's hard to get a good look at
the giant snowman from the main trail!
A fence is also going in between the
trail and 36.
ST. PAUL has completed a good bike
path in Como Park along the south
side of Horton/Midway Parkway
between Lexington and Hamline,
following an old train or streetcar line,
including a bridge. It's about 0.6 miles.
It passes a swimming pool and
connects with the trail that goes south
along Lexington and through the
tunnel under the railroad tracks.
ELECTRIC BRIDGE NO MORE: The bike
bridge over County 81 in Maple Grove,
known as the Medicine Lake Regional
Trail, has been repaired and reopened.
The last newsletter mentioned it was
closed because bikers were getting
The Minneapolis Park &
Recreation Board has recently
completed the reconstruction of the St
Anthony Parkway bike path from the
Camden Bridge to Ulysses Street NE. A
new trail segment has also been
constructed between Ulysses Street
and Stinson Boulevard.
More recently, the Park Board has
begun the reconstruction of the East
River Parkway bicycle path, between
Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street SE.
Construction is expected to be
completed this fall. During
construction, this portion of the
bicycle path will be closed.
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated Luce
Line Trail begins construction this
summer. The missing link into
Minneapolis will be completed by mid-
2009. The new trail segment will
complete a 72-mile path between
Minneapolis and Cosmos, Minnesota.
The trail project will end at Wirth
Parkway, just north of Olson Memorial
Highway. When complete, bicyclists
will be able to ride between Golden
Valley and downtown Minneapolis via
Bassett's Creek Trail and the Cedar
Lake Trail.
DAKOTA RAIL REGIONAL TRAIL: this
13-mile multi-use trail from Wayzata to
St. Bonifacius will be closed until fully
completed this fall.
PAUL BUNYAN TRAIL: One segment
remains to be built from Walker to
Bemidji, about 25 miles. Some of this is
already gravel. The DNR hopes to have
an 11-mile segment from Bemidji to
Guthrie paved this fall.
RECORD BREAKING 2008 SEASON
According to statistician Richard
Franco, this is the first time we
have had more than 300
scheduled rides in one month,
more than 3000 riders in one
month, and more than 10,000
What a year, with few cancelled
rides lately due to the generally
dry weather. As of this listing since
November 1, 2007, TCBC has 117
riders over 1000 club miles, with
42 of them over 2000.
STEVE & GERI SCHOLL - PHOTO BY STEVE SERKLAND
I
never had so much fun training
for a ride. Geri and I needed to
prepare for the Dairyland Dare
and I remembered a woman telling
me she prepared for the 1200 k , PBP
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris-
Brest-Paris), by doing a loop of hills in
St Paul, so listed that loop for two
"competitive" training rides. The rides
were fun because we tried our best to
keep up with some really awesome
riders on singles (and were able to do
so, because they were not pushing as
hard as they could), because we
actually improved, and because we
rode with som e really friendly people.
Our 7.76 mile training loop began at
the base of Ohio Street. We climbed
Ohio, descended on Smith Avenue
and the High Bridge to Ramsey,
climbed the Ramsey Hill, descended
on Grand, climbed the High Bridge
and descended on Ohio. Doing the
loop six or seven times allows you to
become very familiar with the
surrounding neighborhoods. We
noticed the landscaping at different
homes, but our principal discovery is
BUY ONE TIRE/TUBE AT THE REGULAR
RETAIL PRICE, GET THE SECOND TIRE/TUBE
(LESSER OR EQUAL VALUE) FOR 50% OFF!
that on Saturday mornings, that area is
filled with cyclists. Ramsey Hill and the
High Bridge are a bicycle freeway
during that time. We were never
alone. Whenever we were on either
road, we noticed other cyclists. Sage
Tauber and Ed Ebel, who looked like
they were hardly trying, did the loop
seven times during the first, 4-hour
session, and did it faster than anyone
else. Our tandem only managed six
loops. In fact, everyone but the
tandem did seven loops. Everyone
beat us!
Our mission during the two weeks
between sessions was to get in shape
to be able to do eight loops within the
4-hour time period. We had been
close to one loop every 30 minutes,
and hoped to maintain that pace the
second session. Well, my bathroom
stop at Burger King eliminated any
possibility of eight loops, but seven
remained possible. In fact, we did
seven loops, but in just over 4 hours.
Being the ride leader, I decided to
count it. Being a leader has to matter
for something. However, we were not
able to beat Arnold Schmidt, who was
able to do eight.
As I noted, part of the fun of doing the
training rides was meeting people like
Arnie. He is quite the cyclist. We
actually met him one Sunday morning
on our early-morning, Sunday
Supplement hill ride and developed
an instant affection and appreciation
for him. There is nothing slower than
a tandem on a hill ride, but Arnie
continually waited for us at the top of
the hills, or rode down and did them a
second time. His explanation was
"you never leave the mother ship."
Arnie is a new club member, so you
may not have met him. He splits his
time between Minnesota and
California and has extensive cycling
experience, but is very modest telling
you about it. What is extensive? 300
triathlons? He would have contended
with Sage and Ed the first time except
for missing turns (and I thought I was
the only one who did that) and riding
a lot of extra miles, having two flats
and taking a rest stop at the BK. He
still managed to do seven loops, but
not as fast as Sage or Ed.
Looking at Arnie, you assume he
knows what he is doing, and that he is
really strong when he does it. He rides
a titanium frame with Zipp wheels. He
has a Power Tap rear hub that allows
him to chart his output in watts and
compare it with his heart rate, speed,
etc. over the course of a ride. He is
constantly aware of how many feet of
climbing he has done on a ride. When
he is riding, especially up a hill, he
moves quickly, in a straight line, and
pedals effortlessly. I have always
enjoyed watching someone do
something at which they excel,
whether it involves cycling or
anything else. Watching Sage, Ed, and
Arnold move so smoothly provided
that sense of enjoyment.
But there is more. Evan Erickson also
rode with us, and for awhile, I thought
Evan was going to finish ahead of
Arnie, but that must have been during
Arnie's BK break. Evan was ahead of
Arnie descending the High Bridge at
one time, but we next saw them Arnie
was back in the lead. One of the nice
things about doing a short loop is that
you are always involved. On a long
ride, when you get dropped, you are
on your own the rest of the ride.
Being slow on a tandem, you learn to
enjoy the company of your
companion, because a lot to the time,
there is no one else around, or if there
is someone, they are usually behind
you taking advantage of your draft as
they recover, before dropping you on
the next hill. On the short loop, you
get to see the others going the
opposite way, or when the pass you
again. You have a good idea of how
far behind you are, yet you still feel
part of the group. In fact, whenever
Evan passed in the opposite direction,
he rang the bell on his bike.
Evan rides very well, and had he not
left after doing six loops, he also
would have done eight loops.
However, because he left early, he was
able to make his ride that day a
century. I mention Evan because
although he seemed to ride as well as
Arnie, there was such a difference
between them. We hear a lot about
the need for diversity in schools, social
groups, etc. but TCBC need not worry
about this. Based on what I have seen
on some of my rides, it has achieved
its diversity goals. I previously wrote
about Jerry Hofmann, someone easy
to underestimate, who demonstrated
his awesome ability riding his old,
steel, single-speed on a century ride I
lead to St Croix Falls. Evan shared with
me that he had read that article and
was equally impressed by Jerry on
another ride, which was interesting
because they seem to share a
"retro"approach to cycling.
-Continued on next page
-Continued from previous page
Evan rode his bike to the ride. In fact,
for the second session, only Joe Hays
drove (from Forest Lake, and yes, he
was about 30 minutes late, but doing
a loop allowed him to quickly get in
the group). Evan's bike? Just like
Jerry's. Old. Made in '58. I asked Evan
about it. "It's a Negrini that my dad
bought, used, in 1966 when I was in
the 3rd or 4th grade." ; Evan told me
that it immediately got everyone's
attention because of its new style of
handle bars. Everyone else had a bike
with straight bars. Evan's had drop
bars, as well as sew-up tires. After 40
years, Evan is now on his third set of
rims, aluminum ones.
And would you ever guess this
friendly, white-bearded man is a
cyclist? Not from his attire, unless you
could recognize the 25-30 year-old
Bata Bikers on his feet as cycling
shoes. But Evan did improve them.
When the tops faded, he used some
spray paint to restore them to their
original, black color.
And why would you not recognize him
as a cyclist? Well, the temps for the
second session were supposed to be
in the 90's later in the day. Geri and I
were not taking chances, and did not
want to be drinking hot Cytomax, so
we wore our Camel Bak packs. What
did Evan wear? Shorts? Nope. Just a
pair of black pants with a band on the
cuff to keep from getting caught in
the chain (yes, I said cuff, as in long
pants) and a bike jersey from an MS
ride in '99.
So, we had Arnie, training for the
2-day Everest Challenge (http://www.
everestchallenge.com/), involving
climbing 30,000 feet, with a hub that
easily costs the same as some
compete bikes, and Evan, who uses his
bike as basic transportation, wearing
bike shoes older than some TCBC
members, riding a bike that is certainly
older than many, if not most of the
club members.
Do any of you want to try riding your
bike from the 4th grade on a club ride?
Do you even remember it? Did you
even have one? Were you even riding
a bike in '58? We thoroughly enjoyed
the training rides, and believe we are
ready for the Dairyland Dare. But
what was the best part of the
experience? Riding with all the people
who trained with us, and learning,
again, the truth of the old saying
about bike riding:
"It's not the bike, it's the body."
By Steve Scholl
58 PAIRS, DECISIONS DECISIONS - PHOTO BY KELVIN O. LIM
I have enough bicycling stuff. At the
Watermelon Ride lunch stop, while
scarfing down hot dogs, someone
asked me why I bought a new bike
every couple of years. The short
answer I gave him was, "I am bored".
The rhetorical response is "midlife
crisis, materialism, and looking for
happiness through cycling".
As it goes, for some of us, intense
bicycling becomes replaced with
intense child rearing and when the
youngest kid hits 8 we want to go
back to riding. The really smart people
never give it up and find the time and
energy to keep on riding, pulling their
helmeted gleeful babies and toddlers
along in burleys. In my case, the kids
were dumped into dull, boring
strollers and were lifelessly pushed
around the block. For years I
neglected to take care of my myself
and my own needs. My lifestyle was all
about them, them and them, in and
out of the car. I was the ultimate, out
of shape, frumpy I-don't-rideanymore
mom. It seemed to last
forever, until one evening I sat semiattentive
at a school meeting and a
group of seven fast riders zipped past
the school's windows on Centerville
Road. They were fit and having fun.
That woke me up.
A week later I plunged headfirst into
the endless realm of recreational
bicycling. I wanted to catch up on all
the changes. Knowledge about
improvements in technology were the
key. Carbon fiber became the main
topic of discussion in my household,
even when no one was paying
attention. I joined the club, surfed the
internet for information, frequented
bike stores, led rides, and worked in a
bike store for one very short spring
season. Yeah, the family said. Let mom
do whatever she wants to keep herself
happy and off our backs. Twice at my
own expense I went to the Interbike
Expo, an annu al bike retailers expo
held in Las Vegas. What more could I
do? Travel abroad lugging a bike to
ride on other continents? Become a
local bike activist? I never got to those
stages in life.
I was slated to ride marshal the
traditional 25-mile route of the
Watermelon Ride. Having not ridden
for three days and occupied with
other things on my mind, such as
pesky parenting, I drove to the start
without cycling gloves. Duh. How
could I neglect to pack those? I forgot
my specially matched cycling
sunglasses too. My oversize faux
tortoise sunglasses from H & M (a
teenagers'clothing store) that I keep in
the car for driving look silly worn with
a bike helmet, but it was all I had. I
thought about the 10 pairs of gloves I
have at home. Four in pink, the rest in
blue, silver and white. All were
purchased to match specific jerseys.
All I needed that morning was one pair
in any old color. I have all these
bicycling accessories, yet I do not have
them when I need them. At the end of
this short ride, stopping for a second
hot dog, I discovered I could get by
without wearing gloves. Mostly
because about half of my time on the
route was spent lounging on park
benches socializing at the rest stops
and not riding. My hands only tingled
once, but changing positions on the
handlebar alleviated that. Too much
stuff. What good is it doing me?
So now I am saying to myself "no more
new bikes" or new anything for that
matter. My oldest kid is finally going to
college. I have been nagging him
about it for 17 years. I'll bet he can't
wait to get away from me. The plan is
to avoid taking out student loans.
Tuition, room and board, etc. comes to
$20,000 a year at University of
Wisconsin-Madison. That's the
equivalent of buying a Trek Pilot 2.1
every month for a year. Why don't I do
that instead? One reason is that the
2008 model only comes in marine blue
and black. I would want the bike in
several shades of pink. I wonder if my
son will attend school all four years like
we talked about? That would total 48
of those bikes.
In the end all I really need for riding is
one satisfactory bike, and a wear and a
spare. That means two shorts, two
jerseys, two pair of gloves, a pair of
shoes, a helmet and a couple of tires.
Life could get simpler and my closet
could become less crowded as the
jerseys wear out. As long as I keep
riding I'll stay happy.
Continued from cover
pastures, spotted cows, and horses
that decided to run along with us.
Mount Horeb was our lunch stop. Here
we could tour the Mustard Museum
with its thousands of mustard samples
or purchase any type of mustard
known to man. We even learned how
to make mustard. After that we went
on the"Troll Stroll". Mount Horeb has
multiple wooden carvings scattered
about town, each is a troll doing
something such as playing an
accordion or a woman holding a dog
in one hand with an umbrella in the
other. Very cute!
New Glarus has a brewery which
produces Spotted Cow beer. Some
enjoyed the brewery before having
dinner which included a rather unusual
show. This area was settled by the
Swiss and is known as Little
Switzerland. The show included a"real
live Swiss guy" demonstrating how to
make Swiss fondue with samples, of
course. He was followed by three
yodelers who demonstrated different
types of yodeling, followed by one of
them playing the alphorn. The
alphorn is a very long wooden horn.
The yodeling group consisted of four
people, three men (the yodelers) and
one woman who also sang traditional
Swiss songs. One of the songs used a
ceramic bowl which made noise by
swirling a coin inside. All were dressed
in traditional Swiss garb. Very
interesting and entertaining!
Afterwards the polka band started and
many of us danced into the night.
Who's getting old? 55 miles and then
hours of dancing.
Saturday morning brought us more
good weather and more wonderful
downhills with our next destination
being Monroe. I won't mention the
uphills. We breezed along that
morning until we got to a small cheese
factory. There we had the pleasure of
touring the facility and understanding
how cheese is made. But wait,
Wisconsin law requires we all don a
net"shower cap". Since we knew it was
to control hair in their facility the next
question was,"Does the bald guy have
to wear one too?" Talk about funnylooking.
There are some very funny
pictures with no one exempt from
looking silly.
After that we decided to find the
Country Lane Amish Bakery that Mary
promised would make us smile. She
was true to her promise. We cycled to
this cute little farm on the outskirts of
some little town I don't recall the name
of and rode up the half-mile dirt
country lane. They made our group
welcome by supplying water and
coffee under the tree-shaded picnic
table. You should have seen us after
gorging ourselves on pies, cakes,
cookies, donuts, etc., lying about on
the ground groaning with extended
bellies and sugar and jam smeared on
our faces and hands. Just kidding, I did
think we were going to OD on sugar
though. Oh my gosh was it fa bulous!
Once our sugar high kicked in we were
off to the next stop, which was a
bicycle shop for anyone who needed
mechanical or clothing-related issues
addressed. Many of the women felt
their closets were sorely missing
clothing.
At this point Stan and I apparently
lollygagged too long and we
separated from the group. We do that
sometimes. That lollygagging thing.
Anyway, we were fine, we had a map,
and off we went. So we rode and rode
and rode with the wind to our backs,
la, la, la and when we got to the point
on the cue sheet where it said to turn
left at the T and we'd be at the edge of
town in Monroe, we weren't! Just
more farms, spotted cows, happy
horses, and miles of road. Uh oh! We
weren't in Kansas anymore. Luckily a
car came along so we could ask for
help. The nice gentleman looked at
our map and said,"First I have to tell
you, you're in Illinois." Ha, ha, I say.
"Right, now where are we?" "Really," he
says. "Seriously, you are in Illinois."
Now I'm really laughing. We crossed
the state line and never knew it!
Unbelievable! Not only weren't we in
Kansas anymore, but we weren't even
in Wisconsin anymore either. So we
turned around and ended up riding an
extra 15 miles. It was a 74-mile day, uff
da. We did make it to Monroe in time
for the Minhas Brewery tour and
tasting. Now that would have been a
disaster to have missed that.
Our next destination on Sunday was
Mineral Point. Again great weather,
but it was extremely windy. We had
more wonderful downhills where the
crosswind made us hold on for dear
life. I don't remember if there were any
uphills. No, no, I don't think so. I
believe they were all down. We had
beautiful scenery and wonderful
rolling hills. Many of us stayed
together to help block the wind.
Thank you, all of you tall men! Mineral
Point is the oldest town in Wisconsin
settled by the Cornish from Cornwall,
England. The town has many old
buildings dating back to the 1830's.
The evening included dinner at a
lovely restaurant with an outdoor patio
with a play following dinner, put on by
the community theatre troupe. Those
of us who did not attend the play
roamed around town admiring the
architecture.
Monday had us heading back to Spring
Green. Stan, along with Rohonda,
decided to leave early to head back for
a tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright house.
I stayed with the group and had lunch
at one of the largest wineries in
Wisconsin. As you can imagine, the
largest winery in Wisconsin is pretty
darn small. The setting was lush and
green, they provided a tour, and many
decided to purchase wine, including
one person who when asked how
much wine he purchased
replied,"enough." Sadly we arrived in
Spring Green mid-afternoon. No one
wanted it to end. We had a fabulous
trip, plenty to eat, and great memories.
And legs of steel, baby. We topped off
our weekend with a trip to the corner
ice cream shop for root beer floats
where we reminisced about the four
terrific days we had just experienced.
Thank you to everyone who
volunteered to make this trip the true
pleasure it was, with a special thank
you to Mary Derks who planned all the
routes, tours, meals, entertainment,
etc. We had a great time!
by Barbara Landis
"This is the second hot day (not second
hottest, but just the second time) of
the year," the Park Ranger at the Grand
Portage National Monument told us. It
was about 10 or 11 AM on Sunday, July
27. It was one of those perfect days
that just happen. There were few
clouds in the sky, and we had been
enjoying a moderate tailwind on our
ride from Grand Marais, with a
temperature somewhere in the high
60's, cool enough for me to wear knee
warmers for two hours.
We began our ride at the Superior
Overlook B & B (http://www.
superioroverlookbb.com/), where Geri
and I were staying for the weekend. I
would not mention it if I was not
confident of their ability to satisfy even
the most discriminating traveler. The
accommodations are very good, and
the level of service you get from Larry
and Barb is fantastic. The food is ample
and exquisite, and if you hang around,
you can watch Larry build boats. He
was making a sailboat the weekend we
stayed there, and plans to start on a
cedar strip canoe after the sailboat is
completed.
I had forgotten how pleasant and
scenic it can be to ride along the North
Shore, especially when the Twin Cities
are hot and humid. Riding from Grand
Marais to Thunder Bay on Highway 61
where the shoulder is as wide as or
wider than the traffic lane, the most
attractive aspect was that we were
often within 10 or 20 yards of the
water. Many times, it felt as if we had
opened the door of a refrigerator and
were standing in front of it to cool off.
There is nothing like the feel of fresh,
cool air coming off the lake to
invigorate you as you ride along it,
basking in the unending panorama of
blue sky and water.
This ride reminded me of a ride from
the Libby, MT dam to Eureka along the
Kootenai Reservoir, which extends
from Libby all the way into Canada. I
left Libby in the morning and took the
highway that follows along the east
side of the massive reservoir. I rode for
about 40 to 50 miles and never
encountered any type of building. The
ride along the North Shore reminded
me of that ride. From Grand Marais, for
about 40 miles, there are no stores.
Some of the "resorts"might have a
restauran t, but there are definitely no
convenience stores or things like that
until you reach the Trading Post in
Grand Portage (where you also find a
casino, resort, etc). To me, that section
parallel and closely adjacent to the
water has to be one of the most scenic
rides I have ever done in Minnesota.
Stopping at the Grand Portage
Monument (http://www.ggta.org/)
allows one to step back into the days
of the early fur traders who populated
the region. If you can hike a bit, there
is a one-mile hike that allows you to
view the highest waterfall in
Minnesota, on the side of Mt
Josephine.
Leaving the park, we made our way
back to the highway and began the
ascent of Mt Josephine on the
highway. The climb is longer than the
hills we have in the Cities, but probably
not as steep. That is not to say it is not
worth it, because the view of the lake
and surrounding islands is nothing
short of spectacular. Going into
Canada meant that we could get to do
it again on the return trip.
I do not recommend the border
crossing. The lines are long, and bikes
have to wait in line with the motor
vehicles, whose engines are
continually idling. Who wants to
straddle their bike in the hot sun,
breathing the exhaust of motor
vehicles? After getting into line to
cross into Canada, we changed our
minds, a brief ride into Canada was just
not worth that much. We made an
about-face and rode back to the US of
A. However, we were going to have to
wait in a line there too, as the border
agents examined each vehicle,
opening trunks, looking in crevices
below each vehicle, and quizzing and
sear ching the occupants.
I was resigned for an extended stay
among the hot vehicles when one of
the border agents began pointing
back at us. I knew he meant for us
because he held his hands above his
head and moved them to resemble the
pedals of a bike going around. He
motioned for us to bypass everyone,
including the motorcycles, and come
up to the front. I could not resist
telling one of the motorcyclists that
"you'll get there quicker if you pedal
it,"as we went past them.
The border agent quickly processed us
through and we were on our way up
Mount Josephine again. And another
scenic view from the top of the
mountain.
On the return trip to Grand Marais we
still had great temps, but we were now
Ahhh the north shore
getting to see how much help the
wind had provided. Somehow, the
wind had not seemed that strong as
we went north, but it certainly seemed
stronger heading into it. Geri
continually remarked that going north
a lot of the hills we were now climbing
were not there. I just attributed it to
the hill fairy. I am sure everyone has
encountered her work at one time or
another.
T
he summer I got sick did not
promise to be a good one for
me. When the worst of my
illness was over, I did not feel very well
for a long time. My little bicycle lay
unused in the garage. However, that
same summer, my father and brother
came home one evening saying there
was a wild animal in the trunk of our
car. It was with some trepidation that I
looked upon our black Ford as my
father opened up the trunk. What
manner of beast might lie within
concerned me, and the possibilities
were frightening. There had been
rumors of a mountain lion living
around Dundas, although some
thoughtful adults had said that
Dundas would hold no attraction for a
beast of such nobility, and that he
must surely be on his way to
Northfield! As our beast immerged
from the trunk, I began to discern his
nature and did finally recognize him
for what he was, a baby raccoon.
The three of us kids were delighted
with that little guy. He had to be
handled with baseball gloves, but we
were saying, "He only bites 'cause he's
scared." And so it was, for soon he was
tame. We considered names like
Burglar and Robber, but then, noticing
his tail, concluded to name him Rings
While I was recovering from my illness,
if indeed I ever did, I spent many hours
sitting in the shade of a giant elm tree
on the boulevard in front of our house,
just watching cars go by. Rings would
join me there and crawl all over me. A
sick boy and a baby raccoon orphan,
whose mother had forgotten to look
both ways, we felt something in
common and we just kind of adopted
each other out there under that tree.
Rings liked to follow me around and
sometimes he would ride on my
shoulder.
It was determined that I was well
enough to go to Summer Vacation
Bible School. The teacher would tell us
about the Bible and use felt figures to
illustrate stories on the easel board. I
found the stories interesting, but one
day they were completely upstaged by
the arrival of a stranger whom I might
best describe as being a raccoon.
Audibly and visually, the teacher made
clear how very much she had not
expected this visitor. She warned us to
get back out of harm's way and
demonstrated how best this might be
done and what noises might best
accompany the effort. Bravely I
stepped forth, picked up the raccoon
and marched out of the room, and in
fact went straight home, sacrificing the
furtherance of my own education for
the benefit of those who had to stay
there and listen to the teacher and sing
songs all morning. I was for some time
the envy of many kids in having my
own raccoon.
As I got better, word began to circulate
in our neighborhood of a small boy on
a little bicycle riding around with a
baby raccoon on his shoulder. With
what pride I heard those rumors. What
fun it would be to ride like that again,
just me and Rings. Wouldn't I be the
envy of all the A/B riders, or least those
who had not their own raccoon?
I know Ron Heuer from doing PAC
Tours (http://www.pactour.com/). I
first met him in 2000 at the PAC Tour's
Tucson training camp. Susan
Nortelangelo, Lon Haldeman's wife,
who helps him run the organization,
noticed me on the first day of camp
and, in her brusque manner, said,
"Steve, come meet Ron, he is also
doing the Eastern Tour. You two will
be friends." Listening to her I looked in
the direction she was pointing and
there was this diminutive guy, with
really large glasses, thinning hair,
spindly legs, a beard that looked like it
was years since it was last trimmed or
groomed, but with eyes that glinted
with the feeling of total lack of
aggressiveness and friendship.
And Susan was correct, we became
friends during that tour, and have
shared many other rides in Arizona,
Texas, Wisconsin, Ireland, and
Minnesota. When Ron is not on his
bike, he is a world-known tunnel
geologist (http://www.thebeavers.org/
news.html), with a mind for detail. I
will never forget the first time I visited
his home in McHenry, Illinois on my
way to a 12-hour race in Indiana. He
operates his consulting business from
one level of his home. In one large
room he has pieced together the topo
contour maps of the area from Chicago
to Minnesota. I am not kidding. Floor
to ceiling, about 16 feet in length, he
has the whole area. But there is more.
Every time he takes a ride on a new
section of road, he marks it with his
highlighter and uses color-coded dots
to indicate the McDonalds and the
Subways along the route. Ron likes to
eat breakfast at the McDonalds and
get a McFlurry at the end of the ride.
The Subways are for lunch. Yes, Ron is
a character. Ask Jim and Rhonda
Victorsen, who stayed with us in
Fredricksburg, Texas.
So, why am I telling you about Ron?
Well, Ron would be called a "B" rider by
TCBC standards, and I am offering
everyone who wants to or can ride at
that pace (because Ron only rides at
his pace) to ride with him for two days
in scenic Trempealeau County. Why
would you want to do that? Well,
besides the fact that he is as agreeable
and friendly a person as you have ever
met, you will never again look at the
scenery the same way. Ron is an
engineer and a geologist, so when he
sees the scenery, he appreciates it, but
can also tell you how it looked millions
of years ago, how it got that way, and
all sorts of other things. Boring and
useless? Well, you might think so at
first. I did, but after going to Texas Hell
Week (http://www.hellweek.com/)
with him and spending a day or two at
his pace, I developed a strong
appreciation of having him provide his
insight into the scenic panorama.
I have listed rides for September 13
and September 14 (Trempealeau
Touring) and invite everyone to join us
those days. The rides will originate
from the Oak Park Inn in Whitehall,
Wisconsin. For further information,
The New
of Minnesota
After the 2008 Minnesota Bike
Summit at Quality Bicycle
Products in April, there was a lot
of energy and interest in starting
a statewide bicycle advocacy
group. Most other states with
active bicycle communities have a
non-profit organization that
provides a unified voice and
advocate for all bicyclists in the
media, at events, and before the
legislature. These organizations
also facilitate communication
between bicyclists, bicycle and
related organizations,
government agencies and
professionals, politicians, and the
bicycle industry.
To date there have been several
meetings of volunteers who are
actively working to get the
organization started by either
reviving the old Minnesota
Coalition of Bicyclists (MCB) or
filing a new 501c3 non-profit
organization. In either case the
name of the new organization is
