THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL: New School Competition Major sponsor: SAFEKIDS CREATIVE QUEST: A CROSS-CURRICULA CLASSROOM CHALLENGE As of February nearly 100 schools have signed up to Safekids New Zealand’s Creative Quest – challenging students to communicate the importance of wearing correctly-fitted safety helmets when cycling, scootering, skateboarding or skating. The strength of Creative Quest is based on its strong links to the New Zealand curriculum, thanks to a professionally-prepared lesson plan co-developed by Safekids New Zealand and Starters & Strategies. The curriculum links include: • Strong links to Personal Health and Safety and Healthy Communities. • Listening, Viewing, Speaking and Writing • Developing Ideas and Communicating and Interpreting visual and sound arts. • Technology and Social Sciences The challenges are: • Challenge 1: Make a video – for Years 4 to 9 students • Challenge 2: Make a radio commercial – for Years 4 to 9 • Challenge 3: Create an illustrated story – for Years 1 to 3 “The time teachers spend on challenges will be well spent – it will help them to meet their curriculum goals for the year,” said Vikki Jarvis, Safekids’ Creative Quest coordinator. Aside from prizes for the winning schools and students, entries will be part of Safekids’ public awareness campaign. “Entries could be turned into advertisements, posters, radio ads or YouTube clips promoting correct helmet use,” Vikki added. There are also ‘people’s choice’ awards which will go to entries with the most ‘votes’. “This will encourage schools will promote their students’ work and the important safety messages they carry, throughout the school, to families and the community,” Vikki added. Safekids Position Paper: Skateboards and scooters To reduce the incidence and severity of child skateboard and scooter-related injury, Safekids NZ will release a new position paper, titled Child Skateboard and Scooter Injury Prevention. This position paper presents NZ data and international research on skateboard and scooter-related injury. It also presents relevant NZ legislation and safety Standards, and evidence of effective interventions to reduce skateboard and scooter-related injury. The position paper also offers recommendations on how to reduce skateboard and scooter-related injury.
