NBC’s Meredith Vieira Highlights “We Are Saint Barnabas” Meredith Vieira and John F. Bonamo, M.D., MS, Executive Director, pictured with a member of our Clown Care team. Broadcaster and television host Meredith Vieira spoke to a standing-room-only gathering at Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills. The nine-time Emmy Award-winning journalist, co-host of NBC’s Today show, wife and mother of three, discussed balancing work, family and the health concerns of husband Richard during “An Evening with Meredith Vieira.” This free presentation was sponsored by the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation and was the highlight of “We Are Saint Barnabas,” a week-long celebration of caring for the community. A generous philanthropist and health care advocate, Ms. Vieira is a spokesperson for Clown Care, the signature outreach program of the Big Apple Circus. Clown Care brings professional performers to hospitals to entertain and empower children, their caregivers, and hospital staff. Saint Barnabas Medical Center is the first and only hospital in New Jersey to offer this wonderful program which is supported by the Gross Family Foundation of South Orange and other donors to Saint Barnabas. Ms. Vieira discussed her 30 year broadcasting career against the backdrop of caring for her chronically ill husband. Ms. Vieira and husband Richard Cohen, diagnosed with MS at 25 and after bouts of colon cancer, are all too familiar with the importance of compassionate, accessible health care close to home. Nussbaum Society Members, donors who contribute more than $5,000 annually to Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation, enjoyed a private reception prior to Ms. Vieira’s talk. Ever generous with her time, Ms. Vieira took photographs, chatted with donors, and shared her views on modern health care and wellness. Short Hills Family Creates Hope Faith and Marc Greenstein are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children with pediatric epilepsy. Recently, the Greensteins established a fund at Saint Barnabas to Help Overcome Pediatric Epilepsy. Gifts to The Greenstein H.O.P.E. Fund will enable nationally recognized neurologists and pediatricians to come together and share innovative approaches to epilepsy care, research breakthroughs, and the latest thinking on treatment options. In April 2008, Faith and Marc's son, Ethan, was diagnosed with Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a primary symptom of which is epilepsy. Ethan has had multiple stays in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Saint Barnabas due to seizures. The Greenstein family, in partnership with Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation, is dedicated to raising support to better understand and manage epilepsy and to enhance the lives of children and families living with this complex condition. Gifts to The Greenstein H.O.P.E. Fund sponsored a standing-room-only presentation by Orrin Devinsky, MD, a Saint Barnabas neurologist featured in the April 2009 Newsweek article “In the Grip of the Unknown,” about children living with epilepsy. The Greenstein family is exploring ways to enrich the lives of children and families affected by epilepsy and how best to provide guidance and support for newly diagnosed children. This spring, a family outing to the Turtle Back Zoo is planned for children with epilepsy and their families. Lore and Eric F. Ross Lobby Dedication Dedication of the Lore and Eric F. Ross Lobby was held in June at Saint Barnabas Medical Center to honor the generosity of these remarkable benefactors and to pay tribute to the memory of Mrs. Ross. The Lobby was filled to capacity with friends, family, Saint Barnabas trustees and administration, and employees - all of whom recognize and appreciate the enormous imprint of the Ross’ generosity. All in attendance spoke of Lore and Eric Ross’ outstanding generosity and commitment to Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Ronald J. Del Mauro, President and Chief Executive Officer, Saint Barnabas Health Care System and Chairman, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Dr. John Bonamo, Executive Director, and Leon Cooperman, Chairman, Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation, lauded Eric and Lore Ross whose gifts to the hospital have enhanced patient care. PEDDLE FOR PREVENTION Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation will hold its 4th Annual Pedaling for Prevention Ride in support of The Burn Center on Sunday, June 13, 2010. For more than 20 years, The Burn Foundation has provided fire safety and burn prevention education programs for children, businesses, community organizations, health care professionals, and fire service personnel. Annually, the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation and The Burn Center touch the lives of more than 34,000 individuals through patient care and prevention and education programs. This exciting, professionally-managed event includes a 40-, 25- or 10-mile ride through the scenic Great Swamp Refuge and tree-lined communities in Morris and Somerset Counties. Ross Lobby plaque, the celebration moved to the hospital’s beautiful Patient Park. This tranquil oasis is where Mr. Ross’ friends and family gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday. Three generations of the Ross family enjoyed this wonderful event marking an important milestone in Eric’s life. SUNDAY, JUNE 13, 2010 Guests included members of several organizations throughout the country. All in attendance wished Mr. Ross a very happy birthday and applauded the generosity of Eric and Lori Ross.
