Outstanding HSC Results
The 2007 HSC results were outstanding and
are a reflection of the outstanding effort and
commitment invested by our students with the
caring and professional teaching, support and
guidance provided by our staff. Once again
students from All Saints’ College exceeded
expectations and achieved extraordinarily well
in the 2007 Higher School Certificate.
There were 78 students in the class of 2007.
The following summarises some of their
achievements:
• 26% of students achieved a UAI of 90 or
more.
• over 50% of students achieved a UAI of 80
or more.
• Sara Alamyar from Oberon was Dux of All
Saints’ College with a UAI of 99.75.
• Sara Alamyar, Alexandra Horan, Susannah
Payne and Joshua Watt had the distinction of
being placed on the Premier’s All-Rounders List,
with a Band 6 result (90% or more) in 10 units
(5 courses).
• Students achieved 64 (67 if you count 3
notional Band 6s in Extension 2 Mathematics)
Merit Listings across a wide range of courses. All
Saints’ College consistently achieves one of the
highest proportions of Merit Listings amongst
country schools and the highest in Bathurst.
Approximately one-third of our students
received a Merit Listing.
• All Saints’ College presented students in 32
courses and, of these, an outstanding 28 were
above the state mean, some by astonishing
margins. For example, the mean mark in
Ancient History was 86.76 (14.5 above the
state mean), with eight Band 6 (90% or over)
and six Band 5 results. The number of Band
6 results represents over four times the state
pattern. There were also eight Band 6 results in
Advanced English, which represents over three
times the state pattern. Legal Studies achieved
four Band 6 results, which is over five times
the state pattern and Visual Arts achieved six
Band 6 results which was also over three times
the state pattern.
• Because Band 6 results (Merit Listings)
concentrate on the top students, some consider
that a more meaningful statistic is the proportion
of students in the top 2 bands (a mark of 80 or
more in a 2 Unit course). The following courses
all had at least half (and in some cases all)
of the All Saints’ candidature in the top 2
bands: Agriculture, Ancient History, Biology,
Chemistry, Drama, Economics, English
(Advanced), Geography, Legal Studies,
Mathematics, Modern History, Music 1, Music
2, PD/Health/PE and Visual Arts.
• Our students also performed well in
Extension subjects, with at least half of our
students in the top 2 bands in the following
courses: English Extension 1, English
Extension 2, History Extension, Japanese
Extension, Mathematics Extension and Music
Extension.
The above results are testimony to the
dedication of the staff at All Saints’ and
the commitment to excellence fostered
amongst the College community. Attention to
individual students and the encouragement of
students to take responsibility for their own
learning through a collaborative approach lies
at the heart and soul of this success. We are
particularly proud of our average students
who have achieved results that are well
beyond ‘average’. We wish all our students
continuing success in the future.
School Certificate Results well above state average
Our School Certificate results
were excellent with all courses
achieving results well above the
state average. Science produced
very good results at the ‘top end’
with almost double the expected
number of Band 6 (90+) results
in comparison with the state
pattern. Australian History Band
6 results were outstanding at
approximately three times the
state pattern. Overall there were
48 Band 6 results from a class
of 71.
Congratulations to Samantha
Burbidge and Patrick Leal who
both achieved five out of a
possible six Band 6 results and
Rachael McKenzie who achieved
four Band 6 results.
Band 6 (90 and above) results
were achieved by the following
InterHouse Debating
and Public Speaking
The InterHouse Debating and Public
Speaking competition was held on
Thursday, 3rd April. The results of this
go towards the Walker Cup for House
Supremacy at the end of the year. The
participants were Years 7-11 and the
adjudicators were teaching staff from all
different disciplines.
Once again the standard was high as,
despite the ‘busyness’ of school life, many
teams had taken time to prepare their
debates and follow through a team line.
For many this was their first experience
at speaking in front of a group of people
or working together to argue a debate.
Amongst the topics for debate were “That
fast food should be banned”, “That life was
better in our parents’ day” and “That it is
better to plant a cabbage than a rose”.
The adjudicators were particularly
impressed with the professional manner
in which all these debates took place
and the House spirit that was evident.
Year 7 deserve special mention for their
willingness to be involved in this for the
first time. Public Speaking saw topics such
as “Expect the Unexpected”, “Mentors” and
“We are a selfish society”, and again many
of the speakers entertained their audiences
with well written and delivered speeches
of 3-4 minutes.
Best Speakers were:
Year 7: Alice Woodlock/Maddison Jones;
Year 8: Katherine Sempell/Alanna D’Adam/
Courtney Free; Year 9: Samuel George/
Lauren Kelly/Emma Keech; Year 10: Jake
Thornton, Rowena Cregan/Stephanie King;
Year 11: Eoin Clohesy/Rachael McKenzie/
Samantha Burbidge.
I would like to thank the staff who
adjudicated and the House Captains
- Jane Watt and Alex McFeeters (Bean
House), Melanie Jones and Angus
McDowell (Long House) and James
McDonald and Alicia Jooste (Barton
House) for their organisation. Most of all
well done to all those who were involved
and Congratulations to Long House who
was this year’s winner.
Quarry
Dust
with The Reverend
Paul Woodhart
Quarry Dust: I have chosen this title for my
column as it reflects the way we see the Bible – as
a quarry and not as a crutch or walking stick. It has
been a full term and as it included Lent and Easter
our Chapels have reflected those themes.
If I were to select one special occasion this term,
it would have to be the visit of Orange Anglican
Grammar on Wednesday, 9th April. History was
made as this was the first visit from our sister
school, which began last year in Holy Trinity
Church Hall with two students. Over 50 students
came to join with us for a Chapel Service and run
with our Junior School in their cross-country races.
Our Junior School students, I am told, happily
ran with these ‘sister’ guests. Mrs Ann Brown, the
Foundation Principal, has done a marvellous job
and at last the school has a permanent site. This
is on the left quadrant as you go through Orange
to the Molong Road roundabout. All being well,
the students will move there for Term 4.
Back at our College, may I thank the staff who
have worked so hard this term and offered so many
dazzling extras for our students.
Finally, on a personal note, having led a Pilgrimage
to the Holy Land last January I am now in the
process of organising another one for January next
year.
