Dear Friends,
Things have been really busy at the Salina Animal Shelter!
The “Friends of the Animal Shelter Volunteers” are taking pets to off-site areas every weekend and that’s resulted in several
adoptions.
The volunteers are a great asset to the shelter. We have a group that does all the prep work and temperament testing for the
dogs that are going on the Rescue Waggin’. Another group takes pets to local stores and sets up an information table and shows
off the animals the shelter has for adoption. We also have volunteers that exercise the dogs that are waiting for their forever
home. They romp and play in the Dog Park. When it was hot, they all had the opportunity to take a dip in the kiddie pool! It
sure makes a difference in the dog’s behavior when they get out to socialize.
We celebrated October Adopt-A-Dog month at the shelter with 58 dogs being adopted!
Our next Spay/Neuter $25.00 coupon giveaway for Saline County residents will be in the early spring. If you or someone you
know has a pet that’s not spayed or neutered, please call and we’ll put your name on the notification list. We’ll call and let you
know when you can pick up the coupon! Please help us prevent pet overpopulation. Have your pets spayed and neutered.
All things good,
If you have a dog and want to walk with us in the Holiday Parade of Lights November 21 st . please join us! The parade will start at
6:00 p.m. We meet at the shelter around 5:00 p.m. to prepare shelter dogs in holiday attire. If you would like to walk and/or dress
your own pet for the holiday theme, please do!
If you can’t make it to the shelter early, last year we were on the east side of Fire Station #1. Just look for our float and all the dogs!
After the parade, there will be cookies, hot chocolate, and popcorn at the shelter.
ANIMAL SHELTER ADOPTIONS
Matilda Jane, aka Tillie, was adopted and brought home on
April 3, 2009. She is a very beautiful tortoiseshell kitty with
lots of energy and lots of play in her. Everything is a toy for
her in her eyes, and I haven’t changed her mind much on that
belief. I laid her down beside me on her first night in her new
home only to awaken shortly to find her sleeping quietly with
her head nestled on the pillow right beside me. I thought that
was awfully cute, but the next time I woke up she was sleeping
from one end of the pillow to the other leaving me with only a
corner for my head. It’s her house!
It took me several visits to the shelter to decide which one to
take home with me, but I couldn’t have chosen more perfectly.
She’s sweet and fun and loving and certainly mended my
broken heart.
Dear Ms. Base & Shelter Staff:
It is my pleasure to inform you all that Lydia, who will turn
four months old this month, was a perfect pick for my home.
She has made great friends with Leonard, the year-old
Golden Retriever, and my two cats, Marjorie Pat who is
ancient and Little Bits who loves to play games with both
dogs. Lydia and Leonard are inseparable. They love riding
in the car and especially enjoy running together in the
country. Lydia may be smaller than Lenny, for right now,
but holds her own with him when they wrestle and romp in
the living room and back yard. They join with one another in
getting into trouble, eat at the same times in the kitchen and
sleep together beside my bed – sometimes on the bed.
Although Lydia is extraordinarily smart (and cute) she is
stubborn and certainly has a mind of her own. She minds
when she so decides, and she chews anything that catches her
eye and looks intriguing. (Sometimes she even chews on the
multitude of toys and bones available to her). After the
destruction of several pairs of shoes, plastic bowls, plastic
bags full of clothes, carpet, numerous throw rugs, napkins
and napkin rings and newspapers and magazines, I
considered super gluing her lips together, but then thought
better of it. Instead I attempt to remember what not to leave
in her path.
Thank you for finding her and making her available to me.
Cordially,
REMEMBER ME?
My name is now “Annie”, but you may call me, “Her
Royal Highness, the Princess of Everything”.
My new Mommy is the crazy lady who called from
Wichita and made you promise to hold me until she got there.
Boy, am I glad you did; I’ve got her wrapped around my tiny
little paw already.
I want to thank you for putting my picture on Petfinder.com
because she wouldn’t have known about me otherwise. I hope
you’ll give the other kitties there a chance to find their forever
homes by putting them on Petfinder too.
Thank you for taking care of me until I was “found”.
Love - Annie
P.S. Her “crazy” Mommy thanks you too!
Hi to the Salina Animal Shelter
We are two kittens adopted to a good home on June 5, 2009.
These are our new friends. Kylie 6 & Kayla 4 who play
with us at Grandma’s house. Our names are Cutie Pie and
Buddy and we love our new family. We live outside a nice
fenced in yard with a nice house for bad weather. When it
gets really hot we get to go in the big house with all of the
family to cool off. We like taking naps on the couch when
we are not playing with our toys. We are a couple of happy
campers in Marquette, KS.
Thanks for giving us a chance to have a good life with a
loving family.
ONE BY ONE . . . .
One by One, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can’t run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old dog, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is gray, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn’t belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can’t justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The young dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the gray, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thought and my heart wills till be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.
DOES YOUR DOG SHED?
You have a special dinner or appointment. You leave the
house – running late and arrive to your scheduled dinner or
appointment. You get out of your car and look down and you
are covered in pet hair. It seems like if I wear black, I am
covered in light hairs. If I wear something light-colored – I’m
covered in black hairs.
Can you relate to that? This happens to me all of the time.
Shedding is difficult. If you read or hear about how some
breeds of dogs don’t shed, you can discount it. Every dog
sheds – some more than others – but they all shed.
So why then do some dogs appear not to shed while others shed
so much you could weave a thick blanket out of the discarded
fur? The answer lies in the growth rate of the hair, which is
based on genetics, nutrition and environment. Shedding is the
process by which old hair naturally falls out and new hair
begins to grow in its place.
What can you do to stop shedding? Really – nothing. But you
can do some things to control the hair around your home.
Here are 6 tips that work:
1. Brush. Our house pets need brushing to prevent large
amounts of hair from accumulating in the coat. It not only
decreased the amount of hair on your clothes and furniture;
it also stimulates the blood supply to your dog’s skin. Once
the individual old hair has been removed, new hair can
form. It should be on a regular basis, only about 10 minutes
a day are needed.
2. Vacuum. Vacuum your house and car. A good quality
vacuum that sucks up pet hair is great. If you have pets –
especially multiple dogs – daily vacuuming is ideal. This
includes furniture where they frequently sleep or rest.
3. Wash. Weekly (or even more frequent) washing of
bedding (both yours if your dog sleeps on the bed) and the
dog bed can help get rid of pet hair.
4. Keep your closet door closed. Don’t allow your pets in
the area where you keep your clothes. This won’t prevent
hair from getting on your clothes but will help.
5. Use a tape roller. Keep a tape hair roller to pick up hair on
your clothes by the door and one in your glove box. This is
great for getting hair off your clothes at the last minute.
6. Bathe. Bathing your dog helps get rid of loose dead hair,
stimulates circulation to the skin and helps your dog smell
great.
DOG TOYS YOUR DOG NEEDS
TO STAY HAPPY & HEALTHY
Dog toys aren’t a “luxury.” They’re vital to your dog’s
physical and emotional health. They help him burn off excess
energy and keep his mind sharp. They keep him from
becoming bored or depressed. They even help relieve his
separation anxiety.
There are toys to chew, toys to fetch, toys to cuddle and toys to
tug. There are toys that challenge your dog’s creativity and
exercise his mind. But with so many different kinds of toys to
choose from, how ill you know which toy is right for your dog?
First, it’s got to hold his interest. Otherwise it will end up lying
around the house with all those other toys he doesn’t’ play
with. It’s also got to be durable. If a toy isn’t tough enough to
withstand your dog’s active play, he’ll quickly destroy it. In
either case, that toy ends up being nothing more than a waste of
your good money.
So, with so many dog toys on the market today, how do you
find the right toy for your dog?
1. Will this toy entertain my dog?
2. Will it hold up to my dog’s active play?
3. Is this toy safe?
If you can answer, “yes” to all three of these questions, you’ve
got a winner.
Once you select a good toy, put its safety features to the test.
Does it have pieces your dog can chew off and swallow? Is it
the right size for him to play with comfortably, or could it
cause injury?
The right toys will help keep your dog happy and healthy, so
choose wisely.
KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE
FROM WEATHER HAZARDS
Make sure your pet sleeps away from drafts, preferably in a pet
bed. A dry, elevated doghouse should be provided for dogs
when they are outdoors. The house should be small enough to
keep your dog warm by trapping the dog’s body heat, but large
enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. Insulation,
including a door flap, carpeting, towels, and facing the house
away from the wind will protect against the cold.
When the temperature dips below 20°F, it’s best to keep all
dogs indoors, even if a doghouse is provided. Shorthaired
dogs, cats, and puppies should be kept indoors at 40°F or
below.
Make sure your dog or cat always wears an appropriately
fitting collar and an ID tag with your current address and phone
number.
In fact, to protect your pets from the dangers of inclement
weather and to prevent them from straying far from home, the
Humane Society of the United State recommends that you keep
your pets, including cats, indoors. Unless your pet has
adequate shelter and your supervision, living outdoors can be
hazardous for your pet.
Compare the amount of exercise your dog receives during the
colder months to that received during the warmer months. If
your dog is indoors more during the cold months, he’s probably
getting less exercise and may need less food. However, if your
pet is outside often in the winter months, he may need more
food to provide the calories necessary to produce more body
heat.
Regularly check your pet’s water to make sure it is not frozen.
When your pet is outside, make sure there is plenty of fresh
drinking water available. Ice and snow do not provide enough
liquid for an animal. Your pets can’t burn calories without a
fresh supply of water, and if they can’t burn calories, they will
get cold.
In their search to keep warm outdoors, cats may refuge next to
a warm car engine or tire. To alert an animal who may be in
your vehicle, slap the hood before starting your car.
Keep your pet’s coat well groomed during the winter. Matted
fur won’t properly protect your pet from the cold.
Antifreeze tastes sweet to pets but is poisonous if consumed. If
your pet ingests any amount of antifreeze, contact your
veterinarian immediately. Check your car for seepage, too.
When adding antifreeze, clean up any spills and be sure to keep
this substance out of your pet’s reach. Antifreeze and coolants
that are essentially nontoxic are available at many auto supply
stores.
Ice-melting chemicals can irritate and burn the pads of your
pet’s feet. Do not allow your pet to lick his feet after he has
walked outdoors. The chemicals may burn his mouth and
cause serious problems if ingested. When your pet comes in
from the cold, use a damp towel to wipe off his feet and
underside.
Remove snow piled high next to your fence. It can provide a
boost for your dog to jump over.
SALINA ANIMAL SHELTER
Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in
the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently
at nothing right in your ear.
Dog Facts:
1. Cancer-causing agents can be found in a dog’s hair and
urine for months after being around secondhand smoke.
2. Dogs whose owners smoke are twice as likely to develop
cancer. Long-nosed dogs tend to get nasal and sinus
cancer, while short-nosed dogs tend to get lung cancer.
Fish Facts:
1. Smoke from burning tobacco can settle into home
aquariums. Many of the poisons in second-hand smoke,
including nicotine and ammonia, are highly toxic to
goldfish.
2. Tobacco under the fingernails or nicotine-stained fingers
can also pollute aquarium water and poison your goldfish.
Cat Facts:
1. Secondhand smoke gets on a cat’s fur. When a cat cleans
itself, it gets a large dose of chemicals in the smoke.
2. Cats that are exposed to secondhand smoke are three times
as likely to develop lymphoma, a deadly cancer.
