Principal reflects on first year at Sayre
By Frankie Galizia
Mr. Dayton Handrick has looked back at this past year and saw a positive reflection
in his first year at Sayre.
―I have really enjoyed my first year as principal,‖
he said.
―It has been great to meet everyone and
learn some of SHS‘s long standing traditions.‖
Mr. Handrick has stated that over his first
year as SHS principal that he thinks the entire
district has shown pride and respect for each
other, and that everyone has managed to continue
Sayre‘s excellence in the classroom and
proudly represent the community through
various sports teams and club performances.
Mr. Handrick has truly enjoyed the school
year, and he has seen first hand the positive
characteristics of the entire school community.
―I realized over the course of the year that
everyone here at SHS is very friendly and
that their reputation for being respectful is
one that the students here truly have worked
to earn,‖ said Mr. Handrick.
Mr. Handrick formerly worked as an assistant principal. In his first year as principal,
he found some challenges.
―The toughest thing for me this year was learning everyone‘s name. While I knew a
few teachers names, it
“The toughest thing for me this year
was learning everyone’s name.”
Mr. Handrick
was very hard not
knowing everyone by
name,‖ stated Mr.
Handrick.
Overall, Mr. Handrick has had a satisfying year being principal. Although he maintains
a busy schedule, he has stated there are a couple of things he would like to
change for the next school year.
―I would like to clone myself so I can be more than one place at a time,‖ said Mr.
Handrick.

Senior Banquet set for May 26 at Round Top
By Molly Hartman
As the 2010 school year comes to a close, activities for the seniors are beginning
to pile up. On Wednesday, May 26 th , the 2010 Senior Banquet will be held
at Round Top Park at 5 p.m. Connie Guiles, one of the senior class advisors,
said that the class is working hard planning for the banquet.
―The planning for the Class of 2010 Banquet is underway and is going great
so far!‖ she says. ―It is open to all graduating seniors and faculty members, but
parents are NOT included in this event.‖
The seniors will be eating food catered by Callear‘s Bar-B-Que, with pulled
pork, chicken, salt potatoes, rolls, and salads on the menu. After they are finished
eating there will be outdoor activities to experience and then everyone
will return to the high school where they will watch the senior video and eat
some cake.
The senior video was put together by Kacey Ammerman, a student in the
Class of 2010. She chose to do the video for her senior project.
―I wanted to do it because I really like to use editing programs and I wanted to
give something to my class that they will have to look back at to remember their
senior year,‖ she
says.
The video includes
video footage
and pictures
from events such
as Homecoming,
the dances and the
Senior Trip. She is
using a program
“The planning for the Class of 2010
Banquet is underway and is going
great so far!” said Mrs. Guiles. “It is
open to all graduating seniors and faculty
members, but parents are NOT included
in this event.”
similar to Windows Movie Maker, called Roxio DVD, in order to put it together.
―I thought it was going to be easy,‖ said Ammerman, ―but it has been very
difficult trying to get everyone in the video and it is very time consuming.‖
After the showing of the video at the banquet, the seniors will be able to obtain
their own copy of the video.
It is sure to be an exciting event!

(Continued from page one)
―It has always been my dream to someday do this,‖ stated Sikora. ―It is the opportunity
of a lifetime for me and one that I can‘t turn down.‖
Mr. Sikora has been teaching for 11 years at SHS and will miss a lot of things
from his experience.
What will he miss most?
―Many of my co-workers, working with students here at SHS and watching
them grow both as math students and as future productive citizens,‖ he said.
As for the future, Mr. Sikora will hope to become a professor of math education
in charge of student teachers and teaching undergraduates how to teach math.
―I could also see myself working at the government level such as the Pa. Department
of Education or the U.S. Dept. of Education,‖ said Sikora. ―Once I land that
job, I then look to hopefully settle down, get married, and start a family.‖

SHS junior has high hopes for the future
By Kimberly Firestine
Conor White is a junior at Sayre High School. Most know him as ―the kid with the
Dora book bag,‖ but there‘s more to him than that. His favorite color is purple, and
he loves the television show ―Seinfeld.‖
―Conor is quite the character,‖ stated
friend and fellow junior Madison Harford.
―He‘s always got something to
say.‖
Conor White‘s hobbies include moon
walking to Michael Jackson, reading a
good book in front of his fireplace, and
―polar bearing‖ in ponds. His idol is history
teacher Mr. Maximiek, ―because he
is the best polo player [he has] ever seen,
and an amazing singer.‖
―He‘s a good kid,‖ stated Mr. Frantz,
White‘s English teacher. ―He‘s very interesting.‖
One thing that White says no one
knows about him is that he has ―a Greek
God physique, chiseled out of stone.‖
His favorite thing about his junior year,
White states, is that he has the honor of
sitting ―by the beautiful Hannah Robinson
at lunch.‖
―I can‘t wait until next year, because I
get to have a Disney Princess-themed
book bag,‖ noted White. White also
Conor White
stated that he always makes sure he has a ―jaw-dropping book bag that nobody else in
the high school would have.‖
After high school, Conor hopes to appear on the hit television show ―American
Gladiators‖ under the name ―Maximus.‖
Conor’s Favorites
Favorite song: “Wannabe” by Spice Girls
Favorite sports team: Chicago Cubs (major league baseball)
Favorite movie: BASEketball

The Sayre Area High School seniors took their annual senior trip and certainly
have many memories of the trip. The senior trip this year was to Virginia
Beach, Virginia, and was an excellent choice since there were so many places to
shop, eat, and just relax and have a great time. However, there were several activities
the tour guide and the advisers Mrs. Guiles and Mrs. Nobles planned
that were extremely exciting.
SHS SENIORS———————————————
Continued from page 8
―The seniors took a trip to Six Flags America in Maryland, had several free days on the
beach, went on a dolphin cruise, and ate at Warriors Mongolian Grill which many people
enjoyed,‖ said senior Emily Stetz. Emily also said, ―The day after we went to play
laser tag, went on a dinner cruise, and then on the final day visited Washington D.C. to
visit the Smithsonian Institute and the US Capitol building, and then finally ate dinner at
the ESPN Zone.‖
Many seniors had a great time hanging out with friends and enjoying the trip and the
activities they participated in. Several others just enjoyed going to the beach and swimming
in the ocean. ―I really liked the free time that was scheduled for us and the schedule
was packed with plenty of fun activities and things to do,‖ said Stetz.
Stetz also recommended to the upcoming seniors next year choosing a place to go
that‘s fun and exciting and has plenty of fun activities to keep everyone busy.

TOP TEN—————————————————--
Continued from page 5
The Top Ten seniors this year, in alphabetical order, are Lizzei Crews,
Katherine Cybulak, Peter Eller, Mark Hedgeland, Doug Hickey, Mark
Hickey, Rachel Polinski, Janine Secor, Michael Setzer and Katelynn
Warner.
Mark Hickey, member of the Top Ten, has worked very hard to make it
to this outstanding achievement. Mark has done many things that make
him stand out as a student at Sayre High.
―I have worked hard, been involved and kept my grades up,‖ said
Hickey. ―I think my involvement in FBLA has helped me stand out.‖
Mark is not only a member of FBLA but the state treasurer for Pennsylvania.
But, being involved can lead to some high and low points in your
high school career.
―My highest point would have to be senior year because most of the
required classes are taken care of and you can study things that interest
you. My lowest point was ninth grade because of the inflexible schedule,‖
he said.
To make it to top ten of your class is no easy feat. Hickey prepared
himself to make this goal by focusing on key factors of his future to push
him along.
―I focused on college and wanting to swim in college. I knew that if I
kept my grades up it would help me get recruited by a school,‖ said
Hickey.
If you ever wondered what a student actually does to make Top Ten,
Hickey had many different strategies.
―Actually I do a lot of indirect techniques such as sports to relieve
stress. I also keep a nice balance between social life and school,‖ said
Hickey.
The members of the Top Ten were all honored at the traditional Top
Ten banquet held on May 6.
The Top Ten of the Class of 2010 should be very proud of their
achievements.
It is a great honor to be named to such high standings and something
they will never forget.

FBLA 5K and spaghetti dinner a success
By Kimberly Firestine
The Sayre High School FBLA chapter held a spaghetti dinner on April 16 th in the
high school cafeteria, as well as a 5K run in downtown Sayre on April 17 th as part of
their community service project. It benefitted the Penn-York Habitat for Humanity
chapter, and also served as a small bit of friendly competition between Sayre and Athens
FBLA chapters.
―Williams Auto Group approached us with the idea of the marketing competition between
Athens and Sayre FBLA chapters in November,‖ stated FBLA president Lizzei
Crews. ―Sayre FBLA was given the Honda Fit and Insight to market, both of which are
very eco-friendly, which is appropriate for the event‘s title, ‗The Honda Spring Fling‘.‖
According to Crews, the spaghetti dinner raised around $800, while 80-90 runners
participated in the 5K where just over $1,000 was raised.
―I thought the turnout was fantastic!‖ noted Crews. ―Even for the 5K when it was very
cold and rainy, we had an amazing amount of community support.‖
Representatives from the FBLA chapter joined those from the Athens High School
FBLA chapter on May 10 th for lunch, where presentations were made to see who won
the marketing competition. It was revealed that the competition wasn‘t a competition at
all, but was presented as one so the students would ―work harder‖ and achieve more
goals. Both Sayre and Athens received a prize of $2,500.
―It was a learning experience for all parties involved,‖ stated Crews.
Freshmen sample college life at Mansfield University
By Mikalea Hyjek
On Monday, April 19, Sayre freshmen boarded a bus and departed for Mansfield
University. Forty-five minutes later, the students were seated in a room listening to a
speech about college-life.
They then had lunch in the spacious cafeteria, which was many students‘ favorite
part of the day. After filling their plates as many times as they wanted, college students
gave them a guided tour of the campus. Sayre students had a first-hand view of
the dorm rooms, the bathrooms, and the library.
Sayre started taking students to the university last year after Mansfield approached
Sayre and neighboring schools with a program called ―Early Intervention‖ which is
intended to keep students from completely writing college off their list of things to
do.
Mrs. Leonard and Mrs. Shoemaker, two of the chaperones who attended the trip,
both believed that it was very beneficial to the students. ―I had some students say I
actually think I might actually go to college now,‖ said Mrs. Shoemaker.

Summer recreation the only game in town for some
By Aaron Voelker
The Summer Recreation program in Sayre is one of the most highly regarded
summer programs for kids in the region.
Every year, Mr. Dana Twigg, recreation director, puts together an exciting
and influential experience for every kid that signs up. Considering the amount
of fun packed into a summer of Sayre Rec, it‘s no surprise there is an average of
almost five hundred kids each year. All children from kindergarten to ninth
grade are eligible for participation. Staff positions are available for teens entering
tenth grade and up to juniors in college for volunteer, counselor, assistant,
and head counselor positions. This program offers many teens summer time job
opportunities.
First of all, let‘s clear up some of the most asked questions about the summer
rec. counselor‘s positions. Twelve people out of all who sign up for staff positions
will be selected to be on the payroll for this summer; out of those people
there are four head counselors. Then four assistants and four regular counselors
will be hired, leaving only volunteer
positions to be filled by
people other than the predetermined
twelve. Generally, Mr.
Twigg said he prefers to fill
the pay roll positions with
more experienced candidates;
however, everyone is given the
Twelve people out of all who sign
opportunity to gain the experience needed to reach that level. Although volunteers
are generally in their first or second year as staff, it is still possible to be
on the payroll from time to time, given the proper circumstances. Essentially if
someone from paid position either cannot work or is away on vacation, a volunteer
could potentially fill in that position and be paid that particular wage for
those days of which they filled in, Mr. Twigg said.
Each responsibility and job corresponds with each particular position. Head
counselors tend to prepare lesson plans and coordinate the day‘s events, while
assistants help gather up groups of kids to make sure they behave and are where
they need to be. However, it‘s the teamwork and cooperation of each counselor
that helps keep things under control. Counselors always remember that keeping
order among five hundred small children may not be a ―walk in the park!‖

Girls win Small School title on final event
With three seniors and many underclassmen, the season is progressing well
for the Sayre Redskin‘s baseball team. Coach Kyle Raupers is making sure everyone
is putting their best effort into practices and games.
―Practices have been going pretty good.,‖ said senior pitcher Joey Antonetti.
―We mostly work on defense and hitting.‖
All their hard work shows with an overall record of 15-3, with an 8-3 league
record.
―Everyone is stepping up this year and helping the team get wins,‖ said Antonetti.
A highlight so far was a win over rival Athens.
Antonetti said attitude is an important part of the team‘s success.
―Make sure you hustle on every play,‖ said Antonetti. ―You're never out of
any game, no matter what the score is.‖
