NEXUS
NEXUS Issue No. 5; 4 April 2013
News from the Principal
Happy Easter to all and I mean I trust you did have a happy Easter.
Lots of chocolate was consumed in my house along with a nice family
meal.
We still have 2 weeks of school this term and lots of work and fun
to be had. Swimming carnival is tomorrow with lots of excited
students ready to do their best. A big thanks to Mr Nangle who
always sets up a brilliant carnival and I am sure tomorrow will be no
exception.
Please continue to share with your child’s teacher the great job
they and our staff are doing. A small word goes a very long way to ensure their energy
levels remain as high as they do.
Thank you!
FACTION SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Will be held on tomorrow, Friday the 5 th of April, at 12.10pm. Please make sure
your children are prepared for the event as we are not prepared to ring parents at
the last minute.
The canteen will operate as usual, but the 4’s to 7’s will not be able to order lunch
as we will be leaving at 11.30 for the pool. Students wishing to
use coloured zincs or temporary hair dye are asked to prepare at
home and not to take products to the pool.
Parents are encouraged to attend and cheer on their children.
ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY The school be recognising ANZAC Day at a whole school assembly on Thursday 18th of April in the under covered area.
classes will be contributing to the occasion. We will be focusing on the values evident during times of conflict and linking it to our own values programme, as outlined in our business plan. All
Well done to the latest
Values Recipients:-
Cameron Holmes (Year 6);
Molly McCarthy (Year 3) and
Daniel O’Neill (Year 3)
Woolworths Earn and Learn
It’s back for 2013 starting on the 8 th of April. We are once again registering for this
very lucrative programme. Both Coles and Woolworths gave school resources a very
welcome boost in 2012.
We are certainly not asking parents to change their shopping habits
but we would appreciate any vouchers received being deposited in the
collection box outside the deputies’ office.
Thank you in anticipation of your support.
We are once again asking for parents send in a flower for the wreath and are seeking volunteers to put the wreath together. If you are willing to assist please let the school know. Parents are welcome to attend the assembly which should last about
Apr 4
45mins.

Attadale Primary School Wisdom Council
You may have read in a previous Nexus Newsletter that the School Council has
put together a Sub-Committee called the “Wisdom Council”. The primary focus
of this group is to gather information from parents and students on a wide
range of topics relevant to the school. Our aim is to meet with interested
parents to discuss these topics, in a comfortable and amicable environment.
This type of “think tank” forum should then be representative of the opinions and concerns of the
school population. The information collected is then fed back to the School Board to help with their
decision making processes.
Current New Topic for discussion:
(Meeting Thursday 9 th May 12.00PM Venue TBA)
Expectations regarding the graduation of both Year 6 and 7 from Attadale Primary School in 2014:
• Parliament roles
• Camps
• Melville High visits
• Social events
Ongoing Topic discussions:
The introduction of the new Asian and Indigenous studies program.
• Is this a better option in the long term for our students over straight language studies?
• How do we incorporate the new program into other parts of the school?
• Comparison of student opinions on old vs. new program
• Comparison of parent opinion on old vs. new program
• How and when to evaluate the progress of the new program
• Measures to help the program achieve success and infiltrate into the school community
If you would like to be part of this process, even if only for certain topics, please make it
known by emailing attadalewisdomcouncil@gmail.com . Jonelle Mascarenhas is heading
the Council and can answer any questions you may have. We look forward to a
collaborative effort from our parent community to help build Attadale Primary School’s
success even further.
Strong Sustainable Partnerships Survey
Thank you to all parents who completed the survey and returned it to
school. We will now collate the information and hopefully engage the
services, of those willing, for our multicultural day in early June.
Edible Garden
Lisa Gage has been a powerhouse of support for our edible garden and
what you see today in terms of organisation and commitment by so
many students, staff and parents is due to her recent leadership.
I know Lisa has some work priorities that now prevent her from
spending as much time in and organising the edible garden, so if you have some spare time and enjoy
this aspect of the school please let Lisa know. Many hands make light work and the edible garden
will need new leaders and supporters to continue being the wonderful learning and thinking place is
has become.
Many thanks to Lisa who has shared her passion in this area and has always been the first to work
and explore how we can continue to make this an even better place.
Skating and Scooting
Many thanks to the parents and students who set a great
example of safety in this area. We do not want students to
skateboard to school but do see this as a fun weekend and after
school activity. If you chose a mode of transport like riding,
please make sure you wear a helmet.
No one really wants to find out how well a helmet works but I
really expect it works better than no helmet. Parents have
reported to me that well after school they see students riding bikes, skateboards
etc… on the road and on the wrong side of the road with no helmet. Please talk to
your children about safety during this time as it is not within school hours but we
are worried a nasty accident could happen.
