A FAIRY TALE CASTLE AND ITS TREASURES
SCHLOSS MORITZBURG (MORITZBURG CASTLE)
Schloss Moritzburg is a gem of Baroque architecture not far from the
city of Dresden in Saxony. Between 1723 and 1733, Augustus the
Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, had his best architects
and artists convert an earlier Renaissance building constructed under
Elector Moritz into a prestigious hunting and pleasure palace. The
Museum rooms are filled with magnificent examples of furniture,
paintings and porcelain and together they present an impressive
display of the history of Saxony. Among the many special attractions
in the Palace Museum is the world’s most extensive collection of
original interior fittings with exquisitely painted, tooled and
decorative leather wall covering and wall paintings on leather. The
historic collection of hunting trophies – including the world’s heaviest
red deer antlers – is one of Europe’s most important collections of its
kind. Baroque furniture and paintings of the Dresden court, 18th century Meissen and East Asian
porcelain complete the objects on display in the historic rooms.
MORITZBURGER FEDERZIMMER (MORITZBURG FEATHER ROOM)
A particular highlight of Moritzburg is the legendary »Federzimmer« of Augustus the Strong. The
original state bed with baldachin and curtains was acquired in
London by Augustus the Strong in 1723 as an exotic item for
the Japanese Palais. The curtains were removed and became
textile panels, which now decorate the walls of the room where
the state bed was installed. This is how the interior ensemble got
its name »Federzimmer«. The materials and production
techniques are what make it unique: over a million coloured
bird feathers woven into magnificently patterned fabrics using a
form of technology that was unique in the world. In 1830 the
»Federzimmer« was taken to Schloss Moritzburg where it
remained on view until 1972. After an absence of more than 30
years and thorough restoration work this unique piece of art
history can now be appreciated once again in all its historic
splendour in a separate exhibition area in the Palace where it is specially conserved.

WINTERtime is a FAIRYTALEtime
Moritzburg Castle is famous as a Baroque Hunting and Pleasure Castle of Augustus the Strong; but
since 1974 also as the backdrop for the film of the Czech-German cult fairytale »THREE
HAZELNUTS FOR CINDERELLA«. Back then, nobody would have expected this film to become
one of the most favoured fairytale films today. Meanwhile, the film itself has become part of the
castle’s history and is a must-see in every living-room at every Christmas. From now on, the fairy
tale will come alive every winter on its authentic film location.
This will start a new calculation of times for the castle island of
Moritzburg – that is the time of the Baroque summer castle
(Baroque Exhibition and Feather Room) and the wintery
fairytale castle (winter exhibition of »Three Hazelnuts for
Cinderella«). More than 300,000 visitors have already walked in
Cinderella’s footsteps. Don’t miss out on your chance and
immerse into the story of the most charming winter fairytale of
all time! On more than 2,000 m², the tour will take you over four
floors through the winter decorated castle. Also some of the
Baroque festive halls in the castle and, of course, the original
locations where the film was shot were included. With much love for detail, sceneries and
backdrops have been reconstructed. And, of course, numerous original costumes and pieces of
equipment as well as scores of items provided by courtesy of enthusiastic fans of the film have been
put on display. In two viewing rooms, the film director and actors talk about their lives and the
history of making the film. Another documentary gives answers to one of the most important
questions at all, that is the question for the dancing scene in the ballroom.
FASANENSCHLÖSSCHEN (LITTLE PHEASANT CASTLE)
»PARADISE IN A NUTSHELL«
The Fasanenschlösschen was constructed between 1770 and 1776 under
Elector Friedrich August III, a greatgrandson of Augustus the Strong.
According to plans drawn up by Johann Daniel Schade, another floor
was added to the one-floor pavilion constructed in 1738–1739 and then
decorated in the Chinese style. Not long after this, the grounds were
extended to include a building for the storage of bird nets, the large Well
of Venus, living quarters for Count Marcolini and a maritime setting on
the Great Lake complete with pier, harbour, Saxonys only lighthouse
and the »Dardenelles« for mock
sea battles in miniature. This
enchanting small palace formed the centrepiece of the
pheasant garden and was the summer and hunting residence
of Friedrich August III of Saxony and his wife Maria
Amalie Auguste. Careful restoration work with extensive
funding from the Free State of Saxony was recently carried
out on this unique building with its Rococo interior and
largely well-preserved original structure. In summer 2007, it
reopened to the public as a museum depicting the interior decor of late 18th-century court culture in
Saxony. The Fasanenschloesschen is about a 40-minute walk away from Moritzburg Castle. (about
15 minutes by car)
