SAFETY ON THE STREET<br />
• Stay alert as awareness is your best defence<br />
• Cross the street if you feel unsafe<br />
• Be confident and aware of your surroundings<br />
• Keep to brightly lit major roads and paths at night, do not take shortcuts through parks<br />
• If approached by a stranger keep a safe distance<br />
• If approached for money advise you have no cash, avoid eye contact and move toward<br />
other people<br />
• If you are being followed change direction and seek a safe place<br />
• Keep personal items such as jewellery, phones, wallets and bags close to your body or out<br />
of sight<br />
• Have your keys ready to quickly enter your home or car<br />

• Move away from any threatening behaviour where possible<br />
• Do not leave valuables such as wallets or mobile phones unattended<br />
• Avoid isolated areas and travel with other students where possible<br />
• Take time to consider where you might be at risk and what steps you might take to<br />
make it safe<br />
• Program the Emergency number 000 into your phone<br />
• Tell people where you are going and what time you will return<br />
• Avoid carrying non-essential items such as your passport or excessive amounts of money<br />
• Report any incident to Police or campus staff<br />
PERSONAL SAFETY SCENARIOS<br />
Below are some personal safety scenarios which relate to being out and about at nights.<br />
What would you do?<br />
You are walking along the street when a car starts to drive slowly alongside you.<br />
1. Do not stop, keep walking and if possible take a different route to the one you are on but<br />
stick to busy, well-lit area’s.<br />
2. Don’t take any shortcuts.<br />
3. If possible take a note of the registration number and phone the police.<br />
4. If you feel threatened go into the nearest shop or hotel/restaurant and phone for help.<br />
