Cosmopoli, n.p. 1765. $2,300 8vo, pp. 43, [1] folding engraved map; early nineteenth century half red roan over marbled boards, spine gilt. <strong>Rare</strong> first edition in Italian of this satire on love and marriage, with an allegorical map of the Island of Matrimony. The work is arranged like a travel book, describing and illustrating in detail the journey to wedded bliss, passing through the ports of ‘love’, ‘bad advice’, or ‘self-interest’, the mountain range of the ‘in-laws’, with possibilities of transferring to the peninsulas of ‘widowhood’ and ‘divorce’ or the ‘island of bigamy’. A very rare comprehensive catalogue of scientific instru ments prepared by Jean-Noël Lerebours (1761–1840), the best French producer of optical instruments of the first half of the 19th century. OCLC lists one copy of this catalogue at the Bibliothèque Nationale, two copies of a later edition at Harvard and Dresden, and an undated one at Bowdoin College. 60. LIGHTHOUSE – ALDINI, G. Here he introduced a hydraulic mechanism for the intermittent light beam of the lighthouse and comments on illuminations for festivities, and street and theatre lighting. Second much enlarged edition of this comprehensive survey and history of libraries (first edition 1669), with detailed information on the responsibilities of librarians, library locations and buildings, and library fittings. Petzholdt p. 26 (with a discussion on the order of books in libraries). 63. LYSER, J. Discursus politicus de Polygamia Auctore Theophilo Althaeo. Freiburg, Cunrath, 1674. $1,600 12mo, pp. 96; contemporary full vellum, giltlettered spine label. First edition, rare, of this vigorous defence of polygamy, which caused a furore throughout Europe. Lyser maintained that polygamy was allowed according to the Bible and natural law, and, moreover, that it led to true happiness of the individual citizens, revitalised the country, and created a higher standard of living. A fine manuscripts illustrating the applications of geometry to a multitude of practical problems, such as statics and mechanics, weights and measures, ballistics and its military applications, astronomy and optics. 65. A fine copy with the arms of Jean-François Chartraire, Comte de Montigny, of this collection of decisions and rulings by Louis XV concerning the quartering of troups at the designated military places and surveillance of these and other measures concerning the military detailed in 696 articles. First eighteenth century edition of Milton’s classic oration against censorship, first published in 1644 and one of the great documents of liberty. ‘but he who destroys a good book kills reason itself ’. First edition of this interesting study of the emergence of trade fairs in the Papal States with a comparative analysis of their effect on economic and technological development. Later edition, much improved, of this popular guide to dealing on the stock exchange, which went through some thirteen editions between 1761 and 1810. ESTC t130497; Goldsmiths’-Kress 17381.15. 69. MUSICAL FESTIVAL. An account of the Manchester Musical Festival, 1828. Manchester, T. Sowler, 1828. $880 8vo, pp. 120 including frontispiece, with two folding plates; original green cloth. First edition, rare, of this account of the musical extravaganza and grand fancy dress ball in Manchester – all in aid of charity – supported and patronised by the great and the good. The names of approximately 3500 party-goers are listed with a description of their costumes, ranging from Roman costumes, characters from plays or operas, to Swiss peasants, and historical figures.
