Degradation of Bioresorbable Tensile Bars Abstract Dog bone bioresorbable tensile bars of a poly l-lactide compound were tested for strength using an Instron 5544 tensile tester. The poly l-lactide compound has been shown to be one of the strongest bioresorbable materials used in bone fixation. Several tensile bars were placed in H 2 O to evaluate how the strength of the bars degrades over time. It was hypothesized that as the length of time the bioresorbables were exposed to the liquid increased, the strength of each tensile bar decreased. An extension test was used on each tensile bar to determine the strength, and extension was recorded at the time of maximum force for each bar. Tensile strength of each bar was calculated by dividing the maximum load force by the cross-sectional area. The tensile strength of each bar did not decrease over time exposed to water; however, the length of time the tensile bar fatigued before failure decreased drastically. This data can be used in determining whether bioresorbable tensile bars are a sufficient replacement for titanium fixation systems. Because the strength of bioresorbables does not decrease significantly, they are appropriate for bone fixation. 2
