What’s this? What’s this!? There’s magic all around!
November 3rd 2009
Okay, we’re technically past Halloween, but only by a couple of days, but that’s close enough for
us to do our first ever our post Halloween horror themed night!
As always, the daft quiz starts at 8pm - entry to the night is as always free as is entering the quiz -
then we'll be showing the treats below from around 8.30pm...
The Vault
We previously showed Tony Self’s adaptation of a Tharg’s Future Shock from 2000AD, but here
we show an earlier work from Tony. The Vault follows one man’s attempt to hold on to his sanity
when he is the only survivor trapped in an underground shelter. With nods to the Twilight Zone,
post apocalyptic films and even the Fallout video games, The Vault is an impressive nightmarish
piece.

We’re hoping Tony will be joining us to discuss the film.
Bad Cake
From director Kevin Maynard comes this deliciously hilarious tale of paranoia, where one man’s
fear of his partner’s baking leads him to imagine what’s actually waiting for him inside his
birthday cake. A great sense of humour and an eye for the absurd make this insane short a real
treat.
Kevin will be joining us on the night to discuss the film.
Vespers
From the Loonatik and Drinks partnership of Dave Lilley and Stephen Gray comes this darkly
impressive tale - following a mass plague across Victorian England , the last man alive searches
across Bristol in the hope of finding any survivors. Incredible digital effects convey a period
apocalypse on a miniscule budget in this impressive short.
Dave will be joining us on the night to discuss the film.

In Case Of Zombies
Following our showing of Jonny The Pessimist last month, we’re now presenting another
animation from Son Of Movie Bar regular Pete Regan. This fun cartoon illustrates what you should
do if attacked by the living dead while on a camping trip…Much like last month’s animation, this is
another assured, stylishly simplistic animation which shows Pete is a real talent to watch.
Pete will be joining us and telling us about the animation.
We’ll take our usual break here in the proceedings to run through the quiz answers and results.
As always, if anyone wishes to introduce themselves and their particular talents to the audience,
or if you’re looking for cast, crew or any help, or have any event to promote, here’s where you can
get on the mic and do your stuff!
Things Best Left
We presented Anthony Carpendale’s “The Most Boring Woman In The World” way back at the
start of the year. Here we present a truly disturbing short, which follows a young woman who
wakes every morning to find inexplicably new cuts on her body. A simple, disturbing idea
presented with Anthony’s stylistic layered editing.

We’re hoping Anthony will be joining us to discuss the making of the film.
Just One More Bite
Pat Garrett’s musical short “Just One More Night” was featured earlier in the year and here we
have a similar musical tale, but this time with a vampiric theme! Some bizarre imagery and a fun
sensibility help to create a mini camp classic!
We’re hoping Pat may make it down to discuss the film.
The Return Of Ellen Love
From Kent film maker Ben Barton comes this Super 8 “visual poem” steeped in gothic imagery
following Ellen Love’s moonlit return to the grave of her beloved.
Unfortunately Ben won’t be joining us on the night

The Tell Tale Heart
Here we present the second adaptation of Poe’s classic tale of guilt and insanity, brought to you
by the Brighton Film Maker’s Coalition as part of their regular film challenges. A period piece
drama created with minimal resources – but with a twist!
We’re hoping members of the Coalition involved with this film will be joining us.
To-Let
From director Henry Scriven comes this darkly comic tale where two prospective tenants get more
than they bargained for when they go to check out a property. Another fun horror short, which
involves estate agents and nothing could be more horrifying that that!
We’re hoping Henry will be joining us on the night.
