Mazal Tov! “If Bar Mitzvah represents in Jewish tradition a certain
level of growth and maturity… then it seems to me that the San Diego Jewish Book Fair has been Bar Mitzvah from its
infancy. As long as I’ve had the opportunity to speak there—and I have been blessed to do so on several occasions—I have been
struck by the large number of people, by the great enthusiasm and intelligent questioning of the attendees,
the devotion to Jewish books, and by the extraordinary warmth, devotion and professionalism of
Jackie Semha Gmach. If Bar Mitzvah represents an early milestone, what can I say now,
but add meah ve-esrim, for 120 years, and more.” Rabbi Joseph Telushkin,
GRAND OPENING EVENING AUTHOR LECTURE
7:30 P.M. ...............David Steinberg, The Book of David
One day, G-d spots little David on the playground and decides the boy could go far with Divine
assistance. Thus, Steinberg emerges from a traditional Jewish childhood to international stardom
as an award-winning stand-up comedian, director, writer and producer—all because he kept G-d
in stitches. This hysterically funny memoir rewrites the Bible with David Steinberg as the main
character—while riffing Hollywood, G-d, sex, and most of all, David himself. Come laugh with
“us,” as David shares his irreverent autobiography.
A Portable G-d: The Origin of Judaism
and Christianity
Risa Levitt Kohn, curator of the San Diego Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibition, teams
with SDSU colleague Rebecca Moore to demonstrate that Judaism and Christianity
emerged from the same religious tradition at the same time. A Portable G-d portrays
Jews and Christians as siblings and shows that the similarities between Judaism and
Christianity far outweigh their differences, ultimately fostering appreciation for the
shared heritage of Judaism and Christianity.
Edith Gregor Halpert opened a Greenwich Village gallery and turned the art world upside down.
This remarkable woman, a penniless Jewish immigrant, made it her mission to cultivate American
Drawing on his decades-long association with Peres, as well as his family, friends, supporters, and
political rivals, Bar-Zohar has crafted a vibrant, daring, richly textured portrait of a man whose life
and career span the entire history of Israel. Emigrating from Poland at age 12 as an ardent Zionist,
Peres grew to become a great statesman, bold leader, brilliant intellectual, Nobel Peace Prize winner,
and a fascinating, complex, both heroic and tragic man. Bar-Zohar articulately captures “a very rare
kind of adult who carries inside himself a living child–curious, thirsty for love and thirsty for knowledge.”
novel, the life of tour guide Yair Mendelson is intertwined with a wondrous love story in which homing
pigeons carry letters between two adolescents whose love blossoms through the 1940’s to the War of
Independence. Known for his ability to create inventive dream-like worlds, Shalev delivers a tale of
wandering passion and returning home, of humans as well as winged creatures.
EVENING AUTHOR LECTURE
7:30 p.m...............Tony Kushner, Brundibar and Angels in America
Tony Kushner is an award-winning American playwright (Angels in America) who is also the
Marcus Sieff Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Southampton in the UK. Remembering
Refugees: Then and Now explores the paradox of why nations pride themselves on their past treatment of
refugees yet are suspicious and hostile towards current-day asylum seekers. In Brundibar, Kushner
cooperates with Maurice Sendak to tell the history behind and the revival of the Czech
opera/children’s story extolling the virtues of courage and collective action against tyranny —staged
55 times at Terezin death camp. Seven Guitars is Kushner’s collaboration with playwright August Wilson
and recounts the tale of an aspiring blues musician returning home to seek his fortune and reclaim his
woman. At the 2007 Jewish Film Festival, you saw Kushner’s life story Wrestling with Angels; now hear
him in person at the Jewish Book Fair!
Spell Chanukah: 18 Writers on 8 Nights of Lights
Jennifer Gilmore’s auspicious debut novel vividly brings to life the intertwining stories of three
immigrants seeking their fortunes—a gangster turned Broadway producer, the inventor of the first
2-in-1 cleaning product, and the wife of the man who invents television. With a large cast of characters
who test their mettle in a bittersweet era of sorrow and success, Gilmore magnificently captures the
Jewish immigrant experience in the Goldene medina, this golden country. Gilmore is also one of 18
contributors to How to Spell Chanukah: 18 Writers on 8 Nights of Lights, a collection of nervy, irreverent,
poignant and nostalgic takes on the holiday that has a special place in Jewish hearts.
“The Quran is not a holy document” but a “tribal version” of history that “spreads a culture that is
brutal, bigoted, controlling of women, and harsh in war...a culture that generates more backwardness
with every generation,” says Ayaan Hirsi Ali. This internationally renowned author of The Caged Virgin
and filmmaker of Submission now tells her astonishing story - from her traditional Muslim childhood in
Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Kenya, to her intellectual awakening in Holland, to her life under armed
guard in America. Subjected to childhood genital mutilation and a forced arranged marriage, Ali has now
become an activist for the rights of Muslim women and an outspoken critic of Islam.
Standing in the World
Renowned peace negotiator Dennis Ross makes the seemingly dreary processes of international
diplomacy as coherent, absorbing and dramatic as a procedural thriller. Using case studies (from
German reunification to the Iraq war) to illustrate statecraft in practice, Ross explains how the world
works and why U.S. foreign policy doesn’t. Then, in a refreshing prescription for future American
leadership, he details diplomatic proposals for everything from conflicts in the Middle East to relations
with China. Ross’ insights on the need for statecraft in order to keep the peace in our globalized world
demonstrate that he is a virtuoso statesman himself.
