Since its inception in 2009, the SDMS Foundation 

has financially assisted hundreds of sonography 

students and sonographers in the pursuit of their 

sonography certification, as well as advanced and 

continuing education. The SDMS Foundation has 

also supported SDMS members who provided 

life-saving assistance in Haiti, and has recently 

implemented its newest initiative – the Sonography 

Research Institute (SRI). The Sonography Research 

Institute is a comprehensive educational program 

that will provide sonographers with the education, 

knowledge, and skills needed to conduct critical 

original research that benefits the sonography 

profession and the patients we serve.

an International Sonography Assistance Program, and 

has recently adopted its newest program – Sonography 

Research Institute (SRI) – which supports the development 

of sonographer researchers through the generous 

support of individual and corporate donations. In 2012, 

the Foundation awarded more than 200 grants and 

scholarships, totaling over $67,000!

CAAHEP Accredited Sonography Educational Program 


The SDMS believes that 

individuals entering the 

Diagnostic Medical Sonography 

profession should graduate 

from an educational program 

that is programmatically 

accredited by the Commission on Accreditation 

of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) 

through the Joint Review Committee on Education 

in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS) 

or the Joint Review Committee on Education in 

Cardiovascular Technology (JRC-CVT). 

Regularly in the SDMS News Wave, we feature 

a Q&A with the director of a programmatically 

accredited education program. 

Mercy College of Health Sciences, located in Des 

Moines, Iowa, offers a CAAHEP-accredited program in 

Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS). With specialty 

programs initiated in both 1996 and 1998, Mercy 

College’s inaugural sonography class graduated 

in 1998. Adrienne St. Clair MHS, RDMS, RDCS, RVT 

provides insight into the value of Mercy College of 

Health Science’s CAAHEP accreditation. 

Why did your institution make the commitment 

to acquire and retain CAAHEP accreditation for its 

DMS program? 

Mercy College of Health Sciences is a Catholic 

institution of higher education, guided by the pursuit 

of knowledge and the core values of reverence, 

integrity, compassion and excellence. By maintaining 

CAAHEP accreditation, the Diagnostic Medical 

Sonography (DMS) program upholds the standard 

of excellence needed to prepare highly skilled 

sonographers. 

How have students benefited from being a 

CAAHEP accredited educational program? 

Graduates of our DMS program are eligible to sit 

for their ARDMS national registry exam. In addition, 

since the DMS program is held to accreditation 

standards and guidelines, our students will receive 

an education that meets and exceeds those of other 

graduates in the profession. This preparedness is 

apparent in our 100% SPI and specialty board pass 

rate in recent years. 

How have employers benefited from having 

graduates from a CAAHEP accredited program 

available as prospective employees? 

The primary purpose of the Associate of Science 

in DMS program is to facilitate the personal and 

professional development of students. In doing this, 

along with being accredited, employers will discover 

our graduates are proficient and experienced in 

scanning techniques on a wide variety of patients, 

and are knowledgeable in their specialty.

Describe some of the positive aspects of CAAHEP 

accreditation and partnerships with clinical 

education sites?
