2008 SDMS Election Results 

The results of the 2008 elections have been certified and reported to the SDMS headquarters by the 

accounting firm of Sanford, Baumeister, and Frazier. Elections were held for the following positions: 

At Large Director (3), At Large Director-International (1), Finance Committee (1), and the Nominating 

Committee (2). The new board and committee members will start their terms following the SDMS 

Annual Conference in Connecticut this October (Foxwoods Resort Casino).

Letter From the President

SDMS Members Speak, We Listen… 


Earlier this year, in preparation for the SDMS Strategic Plan revision, the Society 

conducted a ‘Needs & Interest Survey’ of its membership. The information 

generated from this survey, along with data from several other sources, served as 

the basis upon which the new Strategic Plan for the Association was developed 

(http://www.sdms.org/members/plan.asp). Perhaps the most important 

question in the survey was the identification of factors that led members to make 

their decision to join the SDMS. The top three factors identified in rank order of importance by current SDMS 

members were: 

1. Free CME – it was evaluated as a ‘critically important’ factor by over 50% of the member respondents 

2. Staying informed – remaining current with sonography related research, practice and professional issues 

3. Subscription to the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS) 

Another key issue cited by the membership is the need to have sonography-related information from a reliable 

source and is best described by the following statement; “SDMS is the true ‘home base’ for our profession.” 

There were any number of other related comments; “SDMS is a very established organization, with a good 

reputation, good information and good meetings”, “It’s important for my career to be a part of the SDMS”. 

Additional important points noted by the members in regard to CME were the “quality of CME activities” as well 

as the “quantity of CME activities”. Members spoke and we listened. The number of FREE CME’s available to 

the membership has been expanded to over 80; representing educational content for all sonography specialty 

areas. This pipeline of Free CME is being continually refreshed. The CME benefits that are available exclusively 

to SDMS members don’t stop with Free CME; they also include participation in the SDMS CME Tracker program 

where not only are your CME credits, required to maintain your professional credential in good standing, 

provided to you at no charge, but they are tracked automatically (all SDMS CME), and then reported directly to 

the ARDMS. The best description of this SDMS member benefit is best summed-up as ‘one-stop’ CME shopping; 

we provide all you need (overwhelmingly FREE), we track it for you, and then we report it for you. 

SDMS CME activities will be expanded even further in the near future when SDMS launches its memberrestricted 

SDMS Webinar series. More information on this new benefit will be provided in the near future. Again, 

as this program was being developed we listened to our members…SDMS Webinars will be available FREE to 

SDMS members. 

We also listened to the member message on the desire to “stay informed”. SDMS News Wave is going from 

a bi-monthly newsletter to a monthly publication. Additionally, educators will enjoy the new quarterly SDMS 

newsletter, SDMS Sonography Mentor. If you are interested in keeping abreast of practice, professional and/or 

clinical issues within the sonography profession, SDMS is the answer. 

As for maintaining our position as your “professional home base”, we have every intention of continuing to serve

CARE Bill Update 

Earlier this year, the U.S. Senate Health Education 

Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee unanimously 

approved S. 1042, the “Consistency, Accuracy, 

Responsibility, and Excellence in Medical Imaging and 

Radiation Therapy Act of 2007,” the CARE bill. This bill 

directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to 

establish standards for personnel performing medical 

imaging and radiation therapy services, including 

diagnostic medical sonographers. The language 

reflected in the CARE bill that was passed by the 

Senate HELP committee would require certification 

and education standards be established. 

SDMS supported the CARE bill as part of a 24 

member “Alliance” of allied health organizations. 

However, the CARE bill stalled in Congress. The 

stall was due, in part, to a separate bill pending in 

Congress, which dealt with Medicare issues and 

included ‘medical imaging’ standards provisions. 

The Medicare bill included a section establishing 

standards for personnel who perform “advanced 

diagnostic imaging services.” As defined in the 

Medicare bill, these ‘advanced imaging’services: 

• Included Computed Tomography (CT) scans, 

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs), Nuclear 

Medicine and Positron Emission Tomography (PET); 

and 

• Excluded X-ray, Fluoroscopy, and Ultrasound 

(Sonography) from the standard setting 

requirement. 

The SDMS had concerns with the Medicare bill 

establishing an arbitrarily defined two-tier system for 

imaging services; ‘advanced’ vs non-advanced, and 

objected to the exclusion of ultrasound services from 

the bill. This two-tier approach also appears to reflect 

a national trend by third-party private payers, such 

as Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee and United 


Healthcare, to differentiate between higher and lower 

cost diagnostic imaging services. 

Further, the quality control standard required within 

the Medicare bill for the ‘advanced imaging’ services 

was accreditation. Lab, or facility, accreditation 

as a quality control standard for sonography is 

problematic because the two largest accrediting 

bodies for sonography, the Intersocietal Commission 

for Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) 

and the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of 

Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL), do not require 

the person performing the sonography exam to be 

certified (only the lab’s technical director must be 

certified - but are not required to be physically present 

in the facility during the examination). The lack of 

sonographer certification requirements in the ICAVL 

and ICAEL accreditation processes is a significant 

‘Achilles Heel’ for using accreditation as the quality 

standard within the sonography community. Despite 

repeated requests from SDMS and others, both ICAEL 

and ICAVL have declined to require sonographer 

certification for all those performing sonograms as 

part of their accreditation program criteria. 

In July, Congress passed the Medicare bill (H.R. 6331) 

and regrettably excluded sonography from the quality 

standard requirements. 

The SDMS will continue to work with members of 

Congress to support passage of the CARE bill to 

ensure that national certification and education 

standards for sonography are ultimately enacted. The 

SDMS believes that good public policy demands that 

all patients are provided with quality imaging services 

which include mandatory certification of the individual 

who holds the transducer. Good public policy also 

dictates that patients receive quality services 

regardless of the imaging modality being provided.

Executive Staff 

Meet 

In June, the executive staff of the SDMS 

traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to meet 

with the Senior Staff of the American Society of 

Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) at their national 

headquarters. Discussions over the two-day 

visit included governance, membership services, 

association technology trends, continuing and 

professional education, web site management, 

educator & student needs, foundation activities, 

events and meeting management, legislative & 

regulatory initiatives, and future collaboration. 

Passage of the CARE bill, acquisition of practice 

and expense data, and the direction of state-based 

imaging licensure efforts were all on the ‘short list’ 

of future-oriented cooperative efforts.

SDMS Welcomes Two New Staff Members 

The SDMS is pleased to announce the two newest additions to the SDMS 

headquarters staff. 

Denise Lewis, Receptionist 

Denise previously worked for 12 years at Cingular Wireless as a Regional 

Safety Manager. Denise will be working with the SDMS to provide great 

customer service to its members, vendors and customers.

Eric is a 2004 graduate of ITT in Richardson, Texas with an Associate’s

working with the SDMS IT Department providing desktop support, computer 

and server maintenance, and other technology-related needs.

Rwanda Initiative 

The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography strives 

to be the preeminent source of sonography information 

for the public and medical community. The SDMS 

Strategic Plan further develops this goal as follows.

SDMS will be the recognized source for information to 

the general public and medical community regarding 

the sonography profession. 

1. Expand members’ knowledge of issues relating to 

sonography 

2. Ensure awareness among prospective students of 

the value of accredited sonography educational

3. Increase public awareness of diagnostic medical 

sonography services 

4. Increase the medical community’s understanding 

of the diagnostic medical sonography profession 

From time to time SDMS receives requests from its 

members, institutions, start-up programs and other organizations 

for support of a specific initiative. SDMS is delighted 

with the opportunity to promote the sonography 

profession and has often responded to these requests 

by providing donations such as educational and 

sonography pride products and/or monetary donations. 

In April SDMS member, Leif Penrose, BA, RT(R)(CT), 

RDMS, RDCS, RVT posted a request on the SDMS 

Discussion Forum asking for donations to support the 

Kigali Health Institute in Kigali, Rwanda. He explained 

that the Kigali Health Institute is planning on starting 

a sonography school within the next couple of years. In 

March he received an invitation from Terry Konn, PhD, 

RT(R), Senior Fulbright Scholar, and the Kigali Health 

Institute asking for his help in teaching radiographers 

how to perform ultrasounds. 

Radiologists and obstetricians are currently the only 

ones scanning in the two main hospitals with ultrasound 

units. Penrose began his stay by cross training some 

of the radiographers in other specialty areas. Most of 

the 26 district hospitals have ultrasound units that are 

being operated by general practitioners with minimal 

training and experience in sonography. He gave a 

seminar to those physicians in ultrasound physics and 

instrumentation as well as obstetrical and gynecological 


sonography. He also traveled to other district hospitals to 

give in-services on operating their specific ultrasound units. 

Penrose requested a variety of items from equipment to 

educational PowerPoints, books, DVDs, VHSs, any type of 

resource that would be helpful to the Institute. He would 

use these items to teach the radiographers in the area and 

then the items would be placed in their resource library 

for reference and future use. SDMS donated a set of our 

National Certification Examination Review books and the 

full set of our DVD and VHS collections, along with three 

textbooks and several pregnancy calculation wheels. 

Many other individuals and organizations donated items 

as well, including Terry & Ann Needham, Society for 

Vascular Ultrasound (SVU), Sound Ergonomics, Pegasus 

Lectures, Gulf Coast Ultrasound, and American Institute 

of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM). Coosa Valley Technical 

College in Rome, GA, where Penrose is faculty, was kind 

enough to cover the shipping cost incurred from shipping 

all of the donated items to the Kigali Health Institute in 

Rwanda.

It recaps the trip from start to finish detailing everything 

from the first 24 hours, to the hospital and living 

conditions. You can also view a complete list of donors and 

supporters. 

SDMS looks forward to being able to help other members 

and start-up programs in the future. It is our hope that 

this donation, in conjunction with other organizations’ 

donations provide the start-up support required to ensure 

the program’s future viability. 

We received the following from the acknowledgement 

letter from the Kigali Health Institute. 

“Your donation is a stepping stone in the development 

of ultrasound at KHI and will help us to fulfill our 

noble mission which is aimed at providing much more 

sonography knowledge needed in Rwanda”.

Every October, the Society of Diagnostic Medical 

Sonography (SDMS) promotes Medical Ultrasound 

Awareness Month (MUAM) to help expand the public’s 

knowledge about sonography. This year’s new theme, 

Sonography - sound it out! is designed to help further 

build sonography awareness in your workplace and 

community. 

Now that SDMS has over 21,000 members, there 

must be 21,000 different ways to celebrate MUAM 

and we’d like to hear about them. 

We’d like you to tell us how YOU celebrate Medical 

Ultrasound Awareness Month. Tell us how and when 

you, your coworkers and facility celebrate MUAM 

and become eligible to win a $100 SDMS product 

certificate. We will select three celebration stories to 

feature throughout the next three issues of the SDMS

Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month is a joint effort of 

the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), 

American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography 

(ARDMS), American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), 

Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), Society of 

Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS), and Society for 

Vascular Ultrasound (SVU).

Is it a Match? 

With the expansion of the SDMS CME Tracker system 

and the resumption of CME credit reporting to the 

ARDMS (for SDMS members only), it is even more 

critical that SDMS members have accurate and 

identical information on record with both SDMS and 

ARDMS. 

SDMS uses three pieces of information to ensure a 

record match with ARDMS: 

1. Last Name 

2. Date of Birth 

3. ARDMS number 

The most common problem with reporting SDMS CME 

credits to the ARDMS is caused by a difference in 

the last name in the SDMS and ARDMS databases. 

Many sonographers simply fail to update their SDMS 

membership record or ARDMS record when their last 

name changes (due to marriage, divorce, etc.) or their 

last name is different in each database (Jones-Garcia 

vs Garcia). These differences could result in your 

SDMS CME credits being rejected by ARDMS! 

Please make sure both your SDMS and 

ARDMS records have the most current 

(and matching) information.

Call for JDMS Section Editors 


The Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography 

(JDMS) will go through an editorial restructuring 

process during the last quarter of 2008. This 

restructuring process will result in the appointment of 

four Section Editors, rather than one Associate Editor. 

Section Editors will be named for: 

• Abdomen 

• Cardiac 

• Ob/Gyn 

• Vascular 

Beginning in January 2009, the Section Editors will 

primarily be responsible for managing sonography 

specialty section manuscripts through the peer review 

and publication process in the JDMS. They will also 

be responsible for personally publishing at least one 

article per year in the JDMS. Section Editors will 

serve in a support capacity and report to the JDMS 

Editor-in-Chief, Michelle Bierig. 

If you are interested in being considered for one of 

the Section Editor positions, letters of interest and the 

submission of professional CVs are currently being 

accepted and must be received by October 20, 2008.

PrimeBenefit Mortgage Services 

Some of the best things in life are free: a beach 

sunset, an autumn stroll through the woods, or a 

smile from your children. All these wonderful things 

are free. 

Sometimes, the ‘freebies’ in life are also found in 

the business world. SDMS chose the PrimeBenefit 

Program for its members because it offers “real 

estate services” free to SDMS members. However, 

the big benefit of this program is the cash back or 

discounts that are paid from the volume discount 

that is earned because of SDMS’ large membership 

base. Much like companies across the country that 

offer discount programs for their employees, SDMS 

is the first professional association to partner with 

the PrimeBenefit Program so its members can take 

advantage of this great service. You get huge benefits 

that the Program offers just from being an SDMS 

member. 

The way it works 

is simple and 

rewarding. 

According to Scott 

Drescher, with 

the PrimeBenefit 

Program, “If you 

were to buy a home 

through your local 

real estate agent, 

the seller would 

normally pay as 

much as 3% of the 

sale price, as a 

commission, to your agent. Additionally, your mortgage 

lender would charge you its normal closing costs. 

You get none of the real estate agent’s commission 

or any discounts of any kind.” Scott points out that 

as a member of SDMS, and its affiliation with the 

PrimeBenefit Program, all you need to do is register 

with the PrimeBenefit Program before selecting your 

real estate agent or getting pre-approved for your 

loan. You would then have the PrimeBenefit team of 

professionals working with you, to help you select a 

real estate agent in your area. Next, Scott Drescher 

and his mortgage team will work to help you get preapproved 

for your mortgage loan. When you close on 

your new home, or shortly afterward, you will receive 


20% of the real estate agent’s commission, PLUS 

20% of the lender’s normal closing costs, in cash. 

On a house with a $300,000 purchase price, with 

a loan written for 80% of the sale price, you would 

receive over $1,800 from the realtor and $600 from 

the lender! “All this is at no cost to SDMS members,” 

Scott adds.

New Member

SDMS has changed its bi-monthly newsletter, News 

Wave, to an electronic format thereby creating the 

opportunity to provide information to members more 

frequently; monthly starting with the July 2008 issue. 

One thing won’t change though; recognition of those 

sonographers who have recently joined the SDMS 

membership ‘family’. Publication of the names of your 

colleagues who had joined the SDMS will continue to 

be a part of the ‘new’ News Wave. The new member 

listing will include the names of those members who 

have joined during the previous month, instead of the 

previous two months. 

News Wave will also feature a new column, “New 

Member Scan”; where a new SDMS member, 

selected at random, will be profiled. Information in the 

New Member Scan will include: who they are, what 

brought them to the sonography profession, what 

sonography specialty work they do, why they became 

an SDMS member, and what their vision is for the 

future of the profession.

Member Scan” profiles 

Bernard “Ben” Smith, 

MBA, RT(R), RDMS, 

RDCS, RVT of Gilbert, 

Arizona. 

Ben and his family enjoy 

a little bit of traveling, 

and in his spare time, 

which he confesses is 

not much because he 

likes to work, Ben reads 

and collects comic books. Ben credits his military 

service has having provided the opportunity to do 

some cross-training in radiography in 1989. He was 

quick to identify the evolving need for sonography 

and changed his professional course to become a 

sonographer in 1990. Ben says he was incredibly 

lucky to have been given great opportunities through 

on-the-job and one-on-one training, plus a lot of study 

time that allowed him to acquire his first credential in 

1994. Ben is now triple-credentialed and has worked 

in Abdomen, Breast, Adult Cardiac, Ob/Gyn, and 

Vascular sonography.

Ben has served as Director of Medical Imaging and 

has now taken on a new role as an Educational Program 

Director of a new, startup sonography program. 

Ben readily admits to being a hands-on patient care 

provider, and expresses concern for sonographers 

because of what he describes as limited career path 

for options. Teaching will allow Ben to help to ensure 

there are competent sonographers working in the 

profession and providing quality patient care. Ben 

is very passionate about his career and says, “I love 

sonography, it’s kind of like a marriage. It has its ups 

and downs, but for the most part it’s good!” 

When asked why he joined the SDMS, Ben’s reply 

was that he was actually a returning member. Ben 

said that he had “lost touch a number of years ago”, 

and now felt the need to get up-to-date information 

and SDMS was his logical choice. Ben mentioned the 

“continuing need for CMEs,” but his motivation for 

joining was because he felt he needed to get up-todate 

on the profession, its issues, and have access 

to information. Ben was quite animated when talking 

about the upcoming SDMS Annual Conference at the 

Foxwoods Resort and Casino scheduled for October 

of this year. He plans to go, specifically to attend the 

Educators Tutorial and network with other sonography 

educators. As Ben said, “Who wouldn’t want to go to 

the Foxwoods in the fall?” 

Although Ben has enjoyed his career and looks 

forward to new challenges, he is concerned for 

sonography. He expressed trepidation over “nonsonographers 

doing sonography.” He says he has 

seen these people do limited exams and then profess 

to have produced the basis for an accurate diagnosis, 

which worries him. Ben is not sure where sonography 

will be in 10 years, but he is optimistic and feels 

that we need to take steps to ensure that “nonsonographers” 

do not have a place in the sonography 

profession.
