SDMS Opens Online Job Forum
SDMS is pleased to announce that it has
opened its popular discussion forums to both
job advertisers and job seekers…at no charge!
While other organizations may charge for job
advertisements on their website, SDMS is including
these services FREE to all SDMS members. With
over 21,000 members, our job forums may be the
best way to create that ideal ‘match.’
Job Opportunities for Sonographers
SDMS members, who have registered to use the
SDMS Discussion Forums, may now post job
advertisements in the special “Job Opportunities
for Sonographers” forum (at no charge). Because
attachments, including logos, are not allowed in
the SDMS Discussion Forums (because of virus/
security concerns), all job advertisements should
include the complete text of your advertisement
(copy/paste into the “Message” box or simply
include a URL to your website where the complete
job advertisement can be found). Each job posting
is limited to one job title and one job description at
one location. However, you can post as many jobs
as you wish in the forum.
All job advertisements are automatically removed
from the forum after 60 days. If a job is still
open after 60 days, you must re-post your job
advertisement. If you fill the position, please
DELETE your posting as soon as possible so you
will not continue to be contacted by SDMS members
seeking the position. Job advertisements appearing
in other discussion forums will be deleted.
All SDMS members may view the job postings.
However, rather than having potential candidates
‘reply’ publicly to the job posting within the SDMS
Discussion Forums, please be sure to provide a
phone and/or email address where job seekers
can contact you directly if interested in your open
position. Replies within the “Job Opportunities for
Sonographers” forum to job advertisements will be
deleted.
SDMS News Wave April 2009 3
New Mexico Licensure Bill Sets New Standard
In early April the SDMS announced that New Mexico
had become the first state in the country to establish
a licensure law for sonographers. New Mexico
Governor, Billy Richardson, signed the bill into law on
April 6. This is a historic benchmark for our profession.
Prior to the passage of the New Mexico licensure
law anyone could perform sonograms in the state,
regardless of qualifications, education, or certification.
The unregulated environment for sonography in New
Mexico has been changed irrevocably, and for the
better. The New Mexico licensure law sets educational
and certification standards for medical imaging
professionals, including sonographers. It is a good law
for patients, providers, and the profession. We now
have a model to point other states to as they consider
changing the licensure environment for sonographers
within their own state. The commitment to establish
appropriate standards for those who choose to practice
in our profession has been and continues to be, the
cornerstone of our strategic plan. The continued
evolution of sonography as a profession is dependent,
in large part, on our being successful with the
establishment of certification and education standards.
As for education standards, a significant step was taken
in that direction with the completion of the National
Education Curriculum (NEC) last year. This was a
SDMS facilitated process that resulted in the creation
of a national curriculum for sonography education
programs throughout the country. Having continuity in
the sonography educational curriculum is one side of
the sonography quality-standards coin; the other side of
that coin is certification. In the case of New Mexico, the
certification standard took the form of state licensure. To
learn more about the New Mexico Licensure law, visit :
http://www.sdms.org/news/newmexico.asp.
We have been asked if the passage of the New
Mexico licensure law represents a change in course
or strategy by the SDMS (federal-level certification).
The short answer to that question is, ‘no’. SDMS
remains committed to the establishment of federal-level
certification standards, and will continue to pursue this
goal with the introduction of the CARE Bill in the 111 th
Congress. However, what can be said regarding statebased
efforts targeted at licensure is that SDMS, along
with the Sonography Licensure Coalition (SLC), will be
closely monitoring state-based proposals as they arise.
Historically, SDMS has opposed specific efforts to create
state-by-state licensure for sonographers, and instead
focused its attention
and resources on
developing federal
certification standards.
However, at the state
level it is clear that
we are seeing an
increased level of
frustration with the unregulated nature of sonography
and its potential consequences for bad patient
outcomes and healthcare cost inefficiency. This statelevel
frustration has begun to express itself in the form
of proposed ‘legislative fixes’; and while often wellintentioned,
the initial statutory language has not always
been sufficient to adequately address the problem.
Where these initial legislative fixes have fallen short of
the mark SDMS has intervened, and will continue to do
so, to ensure that the best interests of our members and
the patients that they serve is addressed.
SDMS is vigilant in monitoring legislative and regulatory
activity at the state level. It is an integral part of what
we do to protect your profession, your career interests,
and provide for public safety. While it may be true that
the majority of sonographers have little understanding
of, appreciation for, or interest in advocacy work, the
fact is that SDMS maintains a highly competent team
of professionals to monitor and respond to legislative
threats and opportunities. It is also our responsibility
to keep the membership informed about legislative
and regulatory changes that can potentially affect our
members. It is the members’ responsibility to remain
knowledgeable by reading the periodic updates that are
provided in SDMS publications.
We are learning our lessons about the nuances of
state-based licensure efforts, and one key lesson that
we have learned is this…it is critical that the local
membership notify and involve the SDMS office as early
in the process as possible. As always, we welcome and
value member input. I can be reached at sboswell@
sdms.org. Questions regarding state-based issues
should be directed to dkerns@sdms.org at the SDMS
office.
Sincerely,
Shannon Boswell
Sonographers At Risk
According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety
and Health (NIOSH), sonographers are at risk for developing
work-related musculoskeletal disorders such as inflammation
of the tendons (tendonitis) or tendon sheaths (tenosynovitis),
bursitis, muscle strains, and pathology of the nerves in the upper
extremities, neck, and back. NIOSH recommends appropriate
engineering controls, work practices, hazard communication,
and training to prevent these work-related musculoskeletal
disorders.
SDMS Fellow
Spotlight
SDMS News Wave April 2009 6
This is a continuing series of interviews of
our distinguished SDMS Fellow members.
Jackie Carlson, BA,
RDMS, RDCS, FSDMS
Year awarded fellow
status: 1995
Current position:
Sonographer Services,
Dallas
What inspired you to
start your career in
sonography?
Sonography chose me. My first job in the field was
in 1965 as a research assistant in the lab of Joseph
H. Holmes, MD, at the University of Colorado
Medical Center in Denver. I had two research
assistant job offers there. One was working
Monday to Friday and Saturday morning and killing
rabbits to examine their brains and the other was
Monday to Friday, no Saturdays for the same
salary. The choice was easy especially since Dr.
Holmes seemed like a nice man who had pictures
in his billfold of scans of dogs taken in a waterbath
machine. My next job in 1967 was for group
of neurosurgeons and neurologists in Lynwood,
CA, primarily performing echoencephalograms
and abdominal sonograms looking for metastatic
disease. I left the field from 1969-1974. In 1975, I
started working at a new hospital in New Orleans
that had state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment
(articulated arm gray scale.) I have worked in
sonography ever since. I moved to Dallas in
1983 and was associated with Marveen Craig,
RDMS, FSDMS, at the International Ultrasound
Institute and in the 1990s I taught at El Centro
Community College. In 1987, I started my own
business, Sonographer Services, to provide sono
and echo vacation relief services and to educate
sonographers. I work part-time and enjoy keeping
my hand in.
What was the most significant advance in
ultrasound technology that you directly
experienced?
I have seen many changes in the last 44 years. The
first machine took two people to operate and was,
of course, bi-stable. We would write the patent’s
name on Scotch tape and put it on the screen
so we could identify the images. Next came the
articulated arm, still bi-stable. We have progressed
to gray scale, real-time, spectral Doppler, color
and power Doppler, 3D, 4D and laptop units. Now
ultrasound is in space. In the echo arena, we
started with A-mode, then M-mode, to 2D gray
scale and all the different Doppler technologies.
Hard copy documentation has changed from timelapse
Polaroid pictures that had to be coated using
a little sticky stick to all digital. The technology
I enjoy the most (not counting better images) is
digital imaging. No more cassettes and dark rooms,
what a time-saver!
What changes do you predict for the field in the
immediate future?
Only our imagination limits what the future holds.
Many of the applications we use now, the pioneers
in the field had envisioned but they were limited by
the technology.
What advice would you give to students/future
sonographers?
Get used to change. The best first job would be in a
busy hospital department during a shift that allows
you to work with an experienced sonographer. You
can never know everything but the more curious
you are, the more you learn.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part is being able to customize each
study for the patient to ferret out the needed
information to help the doctor make a diagnosis.
I know I have helped save lives by aiding in an
early diagnosis. I don’t have any plans on total
retirement. It’s just too interesting and I want to be
there for the next big change.
New Member Scan
SDMS News Wave April 2009 7
This month’s New
Member Scan profile
takes us out of the
United States and to
China. Juqian Zhang
is a sonographer/
physician in Chengdu,
the capital of Sichuan
Province in China.
Chengdu has an
important industrial
base, with an area
of 12,390 square
kilometers and a
population of 9.4 million, but it may be most familiar
because of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake suffered
in that region in May 2008. Dr. Zhang is recently
married, has finished her college and graduate
study at the West China College of Clinical Medicine
of Sichuan University, and received her medical
license last year. Dr. Zhang made the following
observation regarding the differences in the clinical
aspects of sonography in the United States and
China, “Since the working system of diagnostic
ultrasound is quite different in China from that in the
US, I work as [the] sonographer and interpreting
physician as well.”
Dr. Zhang joined SDMS to get more information
and opportunities in sonography. She says, “Since
we are trained in China, the knowledge and skills
taught are somewhat different from those taught in
the States, and I find it very rewarding to be able to
join SDMS. I have learned a lot from the webinars
and conference materials posted on the website.”
Regarding the future of sonography, Dr. Zhang
hopes that “the SDMS will develop standardized
practice guidelines and instructions, especially for
foreign sonographers.” She explains that although
these guidelines may seem to be too basic for
sonographers in the US, they are the core of
everyday practice in China.
Many thanks to Dr. Zhang for sharing her history
and unique insights. Welcome to the SDMS!
