SDMS Revises Recognition of Credentialing 

Organizations Position Statement 

The SDMS Board of Directors had its annual 

Board meeting on September 19, 2011 in Atlanta, 

Georgia during the SDMS Annual Conference. 

During the meeting, the Board reviewed and 

approved proposed revisions to the Recognition 

of Credentialing Organizations Position Statement 

submitted by the SDMS Practice Management 

Committee. This position statement as well as 

other SDMS position statements can be located

Recognition of Sonography Credentialing Organizations 

The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) recognizes sonography 

credentialing organizations that meet the following criteria: 

1. Promotes programmatic accreditation by providing a pathway requiring no additional 

clinical experience for graduates of programmatically accredited* educational programs. 

2. Each of the organization’s sonography certification programs must be currently accredited 

by Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) / National Commission for Certifying Agencies 

(NCCA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or the International Organization for 

Standardization (ISO). 

3. Maintain an open dialogue with the sonography professional community. 

* For purpose of this policy, accredited means accreditation by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher 

Education Accreditation (CHEA), United States Department of Education (USDOE) or Canadian Medical Association 

(CMA) that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac 

sonography, or vascular technology.

Position Statement Background: 

Recognition of Sonography Credentialing 

Organization 

The following background information was prepared 

by the SDMS Practice Management Committee for the 

SDMS Board of Directors, SDMS members, and the public. 

However, the background information should not be 

considered to be part of the formal position statement 

above. Definitions have been provided at the end of this 

document to assist the reader. 

SDMS developed the Recognition of Sonography 

Credentialing Organization position statement to 

establish minimum standards for recognition of 

sonography credentialing organizations for SDMS’s 

internal membership category purposes. SDMS 

members who hold credentials from credentialing 

organizations that have met the SDMS recognition 

standards are considered “active” members. However, 

SDMS is an inclusive membership organization 

with a place for all regardless of certifications, 

level of experience, specialty practice areas, etc. 

and membership categories are available to those 

who wish to join SDMS but do not currently hold a 

credential from one of the credentialing organizations 

recognized by the SDMS. 

According to the SDMS Strategic Plan, the SDMS’ 

envisioned future states SDMS will be responsible 

for credentialed sonographers achieving full 

professional status and sonography realizing its full 

potential within medical practice. The Recognition 

of Sonography Credentialing Organization Position 

Statement was developed to apply these goals to the 

SDMS through its “active” membership category. It is 

important that credentialing organizations maintain 

an open dialogue and work with the sonography 

professional community including the SDMS. 

The intent of this position statement is to require 

credible and responsible oversight of credentialing 

organizations when applied to the SDMS “active” 

membership category. Specific criteria have been 

included in the position statement to ensure the 

recognized credentialing organization has been in 

business for five or more years as well as established 

a track record by credentialing a minimum of 1,000 

sonographers. 

Requiring programmatic accreditation ensures 

specialized programs like diagnostic medical 


sonography programs within an educational institution 

meet established criteria for education and training 

within the diagnostic medical sonography profession. 

This is consistent with another SDMS position 

statement, Accreditation of Sonography Education 

Programs that supports programmatic accreditation 

rather than only institutional accreditation. 

Accreditation by the National Organization for 

Competency Assurance (NOCA) / National Commission 

for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or American National 

Standards Institute (ANSI) provides an additional 

assurance that a credentialing organization adheres to 

standards designed to ensure the safety and well-being 

of patients. Refer to the Definition of Select Terms for 

more information. 

Recognized Credentialing Organization 

The following sonography credentialing organization(s) 

have met the requirements above and are currently 

recognized by the SDMS: 

• American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography 

• Cardiovascular Credentialing International 

Sonography credentialing organizations wishing to be 

recognized by SDMS should contact Donald Haydon, 

SDMS Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director. 

Definition of Select Terms 

For purposes of this SDMS Position Statement 

background document, the following definitions may 

help the reader: 

“Institutional accreditation” applies to an entire 

institution, indicating that each of an institution’s parts 

is contributing to the achievement of the institution’s 

objectives, although not necessarily all at the same 

level of quality. [www.ope.ed.gov] 

“Programmatic accreditation” examines specific schools 

or programs within an educational institution (e.g., the 

law school, the medical school, the nursing program). 

The standards by which these programs are measured 

have generally been developed by the professionals 

involved in each discipline and are intended to 

reflect what a person needs to know and be able to 

do to function successfully within that profession. 

Accreditation in the health-related disciplines also serves 

a very important public interest. Along with certification 

and licensure, accreditation is a tool intended to 

help assure a well-prepared and qualified workforce 

providing health care services. (e.g., Joint Review

Committee on Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-

Cardiovascular Technology (JRC-CVT) [www.jrccvt.org]. 

“Accredited” means accreditation by an agency 

recognized by the Council for Higher Education 

Accreditation (CHEA), United States Department of 

Education (USDOE) or Canadian Medical Association 

(CMA) that specifically conducts programmatic 

accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography, 

diagnostic cardiac sonography, or vascular technology. 

“Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) formally 

known as National Organization for Competency 

Assurance (NOCA)” is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) 

organization dedicated to providing educational, 

networking and advocacy resources for the 

credentialing community. NOCA’s accrediting body, 

the National Commission for Certifying Agencies 

(NCCA), evaluates certification organization for 

compliance with the NCCA Standards for the 

Accreditation of Certification Programs.

coordinates the U.S. voluntary standardization and

SDMS Foundation Sonography Student 

Scholarship Program 

The SDMS Foundation Sonography Student 

Scholarship Program provides a $2,500 scholarship 

to a deserving sonography student who has been 

accepted or is currently enrolled in an educational 

program in diagnostic medical sonography or 

cardiovascular technology that has been accredited 

by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health 

Educational Programs (CAAHEP). Two (2) sonography 

student scholarships will be awarded this year. 

Scholarships can be used for tuition, books, or 

educational fees.

What inspired you to make a career of sonography? 

I had just completed a hospital-based program for 

X-ray technology in 1976 and diagnostic ultrasound 

was a new and upcoming imaging modality. I’m 

originally from the Philadelphia suburbs, so I applied 

to attend ultrasound school at Thomas Jefferson 

University in Philadelphia. I was accepted into the 

program and I spent a very enlightening year studying 

this new imaging modality. My life changed with this 

one year of school because this new and exciting field 

allowed me to have more responsibility by creating 

images and making diagnoses, which I would not have 

been able to do otherwise. 

Did you have a memorable role model/teacher? 

Who was it? 

I have two role models: Sandy Hagen-Ansert and 

Larry Waldroup. Sandy was my instructor at Thomas 

Jefferson University. She accepted me into the 

sonography program and gave me the opportunity 

to learn the fine art of scanning. She always stressed 

the importance of giving back to our profession. 

Larry Waldroup was my first manager at Thomas 

Jefferson and has always been my mentor and friend. 

He helped me overcome my fear of public speaking 

and always gave me constructive feedback to grow 

as a sonographer and a person. I have not personally 

worked with Larry for more than 25 years, but I 

still miss sitting in his old office in the Curtis Clinic 

discussing interesting ultrasound cases and life in 

general. Both Sandy and Larry helped me to discover 

that passion that makes going to work every day 

exciting and new. 

What was the most significant advance in the 

technology that you directly experienced? 

Having been in our profession for more than 30 years, 

I have experienced many significant advances in 

technology that have impacted my role clinically. One 

advance that I use daily is Cineloop. This technology 

not only allows us to review previously stored 

individual frames but also to record cine clips into 

our routine ultrasound protocols. This feature makes 

our work life so much easier and faster. Intracavitary 

probes are another advance I’ve experienced and use 

daily. These probes allow us to use higher frequencies, 

gaining better resolution and exquisite detail that 

isn’t possible with transabdominal probes, especially 

as maternal BMI’s have continued to increase in 

the United States. Three-dimensional technology 

with multiplanar display, 3D rendering, and live 3D 

have also changed how we perform an obstetrical 

ultrasound on a fetus with an anomaly since we can 

obtain more information, which helps with counseling 

patients. 

Were there any memorable developments, cases 

or events that changed the way you practiced 

sonography? 

When my husband and I relocated to Columbus, 

Ohio, I was very fortunate to be hired at The Ohio 

State University by Steven Gabbe, MD. Dr. Gabbe had 

also just relocated from Philadelphia after accepting 

the position as the Department Chair of Obstetrics 

and Gynecology. His passion for high-risk obstetrical 

sonography made me more aware of the clinical 

aspect of this modality, such as how sonographers’ 

input with this diagnostic examination helps 

physicians determine patient management. He helped 

show me how we, as sonographers, truly impact the 

health and well-being of mothers and fetuses.

What changes do you predict in the immediate 

future? 

In the next decade, I think the expansion of pocketsized 

ultrasound equipment could revolutionize 

health care. However, as with any new equipment 

or technique, we need to improve education to best 

utilize it. This educational component will need to be 

addressed, especially since all physicians have not 

been exposed to sonography during medical school 

or residency. I also expect the continual improvement 

of transducer design, which, of course, will lead to 

improved resolution and advancements in ergonomic 

design. And that should help to reduce muscular 

skeletal injuries. 

What advice would you give to students/ future 

sonographers? 

My advice is to become the best sonographer you can 

be. Work to understand the physics of ultrasound—it’s 

important to know why we see what we do in images. 


Always generate the best images possible because 

the examination is a reflection of you. Understand the 

clinical importance of the examination—we make 

an impact on the patient’s health by tailoring each 

exam to the patient’s history. Read, read, read—both 

journals and ultrasound textbooks. The field is always 

changing, so stay current. Become involved in the 

ultrasound community—it’s important to give back, 

whether on the local, state or national level. Service 

should always be part of your career. 

What’s your favorite part of your job? 

My favorite part of my job is working with our 

wonderful group of obstetrical sonographers, nurses, 

and maternal fetal medicine physicians at The Ohio 

State University Medical Center. They are truly 

committed to advancing technologies and treatments 

that deliver personalized health care to every female 

patient we see.

Iran, Belgium, Mali, and Peru are just a few of the countries 

SDMS members call home. In all, forty-two countries are 

represented within the SDMS membership-at-large. We 

were interested in learning more about our international 

sonographer community so we created a series of articles, 

each featuring an international SDMS member. Look for 

them in upcoming issues of SDMS News Wave. 

Aung Tin Htun, MD (Hong Kong) 

Tin, with nearly thirty years’ experience in general and 

neurosurgery in Hong Kong, is a firm proponent for 

the efficacy of sonography in the field of neuroscience. 

Because Tin found sonography to be instrumental 

throughout his career as a surgeon, after immigrating 

to the US in 2009, and being unable to step into 

practicing surgery immediately, he looked to 

sonography as a career. Tin states, “I had been doing 

transcranial Doppler and intraoperative ultrasound for 

brain tumors during surgery for over ten years, and I 

found it very exciting using a non-invasive procedure 

with little bioeffect.” 

One procedure mentioned involved using a 

fiber optic probe to test the patency of arteries 

clipped due to cerebral aneurysm as well to 

ensure surrounding arteries remain unaffected, 

thus avoiding serious neurologic damage. Other 

ultrasound uses mentioned were locating tiny 

perforations otherwise only detectable with a 

microscope, locating and treating intracerebral 

haematomas with burr-hole transducers, and treating 

gliomas. Tin is excited to see where advances in 

fiber optics and computer technology might take 

sonography in the field of neurosurgery. 

Tin has recently returned to Hong Kong and has been 

studying for the ARDMS exams. He just passed the 

Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) 

exam and is now preparing for specialty exams. 

Tin joined SDMS to earn Continuing Medical 

Education credits towards his ARDMS credentialing 

process.
