Genesee Health Plan
Being out of work is tough enough. Being a diabetic
without means to pay for insulin can mean the
difference between life and death.
Enter the Genesee Health Plan (GHP), a nationallyrecognized
nonprofit health plan that provides over
25,000 members with doctor visits, cancer screenings,
prescription drugs, X-rays and more.
“We save lives every day,” said Linda Hamacher, President
and Chief Executive Officer. “Many of our members
are really sick with diabetes, cancer and heart
disease. Others are able to avoid serious ailments by
working with our staff on preventive care issues and
learning how to lead healthier lives. In both respects,
we are providing life-saving coverage for the uninsured
in our community, and that ultimately benefits everyone
in Genesee County,”
In 2005, the Community Foundation partnered with
the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Ruth
Mott Foundation to provide funding for an infrastructure
to create a quality health plan for low income
individuals in our community. The infusion of capital
dollars helped leverage other federal and state funding.
“Because of the grantmaking, we were able to expand
services and design an amazing disease management
tracking system so we know that our patient’s health
is improving,” Hamacher said.
• Healthy behaviors such as exercise and a healthy
diet have improved by 57 percent
• About 89 percent of diabetes patients have
improved their self-management.
• The number of uninsured children is down
by 25 percent.

• Since 2005, emergency room visits by people
enrolled in the plan are down 51 percent
• Mammograms and preventive screenings for
women have quadrupled.
GHP is the central location in this community where
people find out how to get help with their health care.
“We connect people with the help they need to live
longer and more productive lives,” Hamacher said.
