Dear FrienDs,
The work we do at the Community Foundation is the
best of all work. As the stories in the annual report
reveal, we have the privilege of being part of the
amazing good works of a wide variety of people and
organizations. As we share with you the wonderful
things made possible in 2009 by the good people
and great nonprofit organizations of Genesee County,
we ask that you reflect on how blessed our community
is to have such abundant, inspired leadership.
Leadership comes to us in many different ways. Take
Phil Braun who represents the best of the Greatest
Generation; or Joe Daily, a Gen Xer whose life, but
not impact, was cut short. How about the Landaal
family? From generation to generation the Landaals
have been an important part of the economic fabric
of Genesee County. Now they have made sure their
children and grandchildren will play an important role
in strengthening the well-being of our community.
Leadership also comes from organizations like the
CRIM Fitness Foundation, Flint Area Reinvestment
Office, Flint Neighborhood Improvement and Preservation
Project and the Flint Institute of Arts. These
valued institutions make an incredibly important
difference in improving life for tens of thousands of
people throughout Genesee County.
As you read through this report, keep in mind this
is just a sample of the remarkable stories of leadership
in our community. It is our privilege to be in
partnership with many individuals and organizations
like these, all helping to lead the way to a better and
brighter future for the Greater Flint area.
He expressed his unconditional love for humankind through
photography, writing, art and music. For Philip J. “Phil” Braun,
artistic expression was just one way of giving back to the
community he loved so dearly.
Born and raised in Flint, Phil learned the value of “giving
forward” by his father’s example and from other community
leaders whom he had known and admired. In Faces, one of
several books he published, Phil shares the stories of several
Drawing in broader and more diverse audiences is the number
one goal of the Flint Institute of Arts (FIA), one of Michigan’s
premiere art institutions. For Clara Blakely, a long-time art lover,
artist and author, volunteering at the FIA was a natural fit.
Clara is a member of the FIA’s African American Community
Gala committee whose purpose is to plan, fundraise and
implement an annual community celebration and Gala.
She recalls being thrilled when John Henry, FIA Director,
suggested bringing Mary Lee Bendolph’s Gee’s Bend Quilt
exhibit to the community. A grant of $17,500 from the
Community Foundation’s Community Impact Fund provided
support for the exhibit.
The art of quilting is near and dear to Clara’s heart. She learned
the process from her grandmother and great-aunt who picked
cotton, pulled out seeds and beat it down for quilt-making.
“The traditional and generational pull of this exhibit was
significant.” Clara says. “A lot of people aren’t aware of the
contributions of African American artists. Gee’s Bend was
a way to engage the larger community — including college
students — in cultural center activities.”
Nearly 40,000 visitors attended the Gee’s Bend exhibit held
January-April 2010 to coincide with Black History Month.
“The spirit and outreach of Gee’s Bend inspired others,” Clara
adds. “The ripple effect is going to be felt for a long time.”
When Landaal Packaging Systems marked its 50th anniversary
in 2009, company founder Virginia Landaal celebrated
by making a gift to the community. In keeping with the
family’s core values — God, family and community — Virginia
established a donor advised Fund that will benefit the greater
Flint community for generations to come.
“We really emphasize our involvement in the community
because we’re in business here and we’ve had a wonderful run
of 50 years,” Virginia says. “God has blessed us so much, so
we’ve got to try and help others.”
Rather than start a private family foundation, Virginia and her
two children, Barbara Landaal Terry* and Steve Landaal, chose
“The Community Foundation offers a better opportunity to
get the next generation involved in philanthropy,” Steve says,
adding that Virginia’s grandchildren will be involved in advising
grants. “It’s important that we carry on these family values and
pass them on to our children.”
“Keeping our family together and keeping them aware of the
things they must do, that’s what’s most important,” Virginia adds.
Steve says the Community Foundation understands the needs
of the community and that knowledge will help inform their
grantmaking so they can make the most impact.
“This all-encompassing approach is like one-stop shopping for
someone who wants to do broad philanthropic work,” Steve
says. “We want to be a part of creating a community that
provides family stability and meaningful jobs. And we want
to give back to the community that’s been so good to us over
the years.”
“We’ve got room for everybody,” says Sarah Kelly Hartman,
Sarah coordinates the program and also serves as a volunteer
Group leaders are the backbone of the 15-week program, Sarah
says. They range in age from 18 to 86, meeting their groups in
different locations each week to keep the training experience
interesting. Under their leadership, participants learn to train
properly and improve their fitness levels.
With 95 percent of program participants finishing the race,
achieve their goals along with promoting a healthier life.
When Flint needed an interim mayor in 2009, Mike Brown stepped up
to the plate to lead Flint in a positive direction during his six-month
tenure at city hall. But this man is no pinch-hitter.
He’s chaired the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, directed
two United Way organizations and led inter-governmental relations
and community development for the City of Flint. Now Mike leads the
Flint Area Reinvestment Office (FARO), an idea fostered by the Charles
Stewart Mott Foundation. The Community Foundation responded to
the invitation to strengthen FARO’s resources and advised a $20,000
grant from the Community Impact Fund.
In this new role Mike is on the front lines of pursuing significant federal
funding for Flint and Genesee County. Many of those dollars come
from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law by
President Barack Obama in February 2009.
“We need to be aggressive about pursuing those resources and
leveraging that funding,” Mike says. “It’s about bringing key players
together and forming partnerships so we can transform our community
for the new jobs of the future.”
Quality jobs, education, health care and green environments are a focus
for FARO. When federal grant opportunities come about, Mike informs
local nonprofit organizations, businesses and government entities who
may carry out the work. It is through awareness and public/private
collaborations that competitive federal dollars are secured, programs
are implemented, and results are achieved.
“There’s a new openness to integrate services and look at ways of doing
business together,” Mike says. “I want to make a contribution and I feel
blessed to have this opportunity.”
Last year $23,000 in mini grants were awarded from the
The impact of those grants is where Christine’s day job
Being designated as a historic site presented a final challenge
for the long-awaited opening of Witherbee’s Market & Deli,
downtown Flint’s only grocery store. The porcelain covered
panels on the building’s exterior had to be restored to their
original condition — which meant stripping and re-glazing,
a more costly process than a simple paint job.
That’s when Bitha Tucker, executive director of Flint
Neighborhood Improvement and Preservation Project (FNIPP),
turned to the Community Foundation for help. Through a
$15,000 grant from the Community Impact and Downtown
Façade Improvement Funds, the repairs were made, paving
the way for the market’s grand opening in 2010.
Located at 601 ML King at Third Avenue, Witherbee’s brings
healthy, fresh food to an inner-city neighborhood that’s been
without a grocer for years. The 5,000-square-foot market
provides all the necessities for nearby residents and area
university students.
Learn more
Redeveloping the once abandoned building was a new
leadership effort for FNIPP, a local nonprofit dedicated
to housing and rehabbing homes.
“We needed to step out of our boundaries of just housing
and venture into new areas,” Bitha said. “Witherbee’s presented
a new learning experience for our organization.”
The $1.5 million project was a collaborative effort and
various funders have contributed to its success. FNIPP
owns the building and is leasing the grocery operations
to a local management group headed by David White
and Perry Compton.
“Residents of Carriage Town and area university students
can now walk to the store to buy fresh fruits, get a deli
A musician, writer and filmmaker, Joe Daily was an emerging
young leader in the Flushing community. He edited the school
newspaper, wrote and performed songs and was a regular
talent at Flushing’s Elbow Room. Following graduation from
the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Joe began to teach
and mentor youth at Grand Blanc and Flushing high schools.
Despite his abundant energy, Joe suffered from a rare form
of cancer for over 18 years.
“Everyone knew Joe and loved Joe. He was the coolest guy,”
said former Flushing Mayor Jan Gensel.
Learn more
Not surprisingly, the Flushing community responded quickly
when Joe’s family needed financial support for an impending
surgery not covered by insurance. In just three weeks a
remarkable $268,000 was raised for the Joe Daily Transplant
Fund to help with Joe’s unreimbursed medical expenses.
After Joe’s passing, over $250,000 remained in the Fund being
held at a local church.
Recognizing the importance of continuing Joe’s legacy,
The Community Foundation serves all of Genesee County, an
area comprised of many communities, each with its own history
and character.
Five communities have established geographic affiliates of the
Community Foundation. There is an endowed community Fund
benefiting Clio, Davison, Fenton, Flushing and Grand Blanc
which is led by local volunteers who share a passion for the
place they call home.
Leaders serve on Advisory Committees that work with the
Community Foundation’s professional staff to help identify
current and emerging charitable needs in their communities.
They also advise grantmaking. Here’s a sample of grants advised
in 2009 by Advisory Committee leaders:
“C is for Clio Alphabet Book” captures the spirit of Clio in this
student-authored illustrated book funded in part by a $550
grant advised by the Clio Area Community Fund.
Outreach East, a local nonprofit that provides emergency
food and personal items to individuals and families in Davison,
received support through a $500 grant advised by the
Davison Community Fund.
A barrier-free entrance ramp was installed at Veterans of
Foreign Wars – Price, Crane, Robinsons Post #4642 of Linden,
thanks to a $6,666 challenge grant issued by the Fenton
Community Fund.
Individuals with SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program) debit cards now have access to vendors at the
Grand Blanc Farmer’s Market with help from a $5,000 grant
advised by the Grand Blanc Community Fund.
This is homegrown, hometown philanthropy that is making
a difference today, and will continue to do so far into the future.
An endowed geographic affiliate Fund provides
a permanent source of funding to enhance the
quality of life for area residents.
They understood the need was great and stepped up to the challenge.
Youth grantmakers from the Community Foundation’s Countywide Youth
Advisory Committee have supported the “Help Stuff a Back Pack Challenge”
since 2002, advising grants of $39,000 since the program’s inception. In
2009, the youth went above and beyond to provide a record 483 back
packs to deserving students.
Representing various communities in Genesee County, the young leaders
challenged businesses and individuals to support the project by offering
a one-to-one challenge grant for every dollar donated, up to $5,000.
Additional support for the project came from community partners. The
Flint Journal helped with promotion, Meijer provided the back packs at
a 50 percent discount and the Genesee Intermediate School District
distributed them to area students.
Results were impressive. The challenge grant was a success and together
with community contributions, $12,075 was raised. Over 400 students in
20 school districts across Genesee County proudly carried new, colorful
back packs to school, fully stuffed with needed school supplies.
Youth Initiative Program Funds are permanently endowed funds of the Community Foundation
of Greater Flint. The Funds were established in the 1990s through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation for the purpose of involving young people in philanthropy and volunteer service.
