When Landaal Packaging Systems marked its 50th anniversary
in 2009, company founder Virginia Landaal celebrated
by making a gift to the community. In keeping with the
family’s core values — God, family and community — Virginia
established a donor advised Fund that will benefit the greater
Flint community for generations to come.
“We really emphasize our involvement in the community
because we’re in business here and we’ve had a wonderful run
of 50 years,” Virginia says. “God has blessed us so much, so
we’ve got to try and help others.”
Rather than start a private family foundation, Virginia and her
two children, Barbara Landaal Terry* and Steve Landaal, chose

get the next generation involved in philanthropy,” Steve says,
adding that Virginia’s grandchildren will be involved in advising
grants. “It’s important that we carry on these family values and
pass them on to our children.”
“Keeping our family together and keeping them aware of the
things they must do, that’s what’s most important,” Virginia adds.
Steve says the Community Foundation understands the needs
of the community and that knowledge will help inform their
grantmaking so they can make the most impact.
“This all-encompassing approach is like one-stop shopping for
someone who wants to do broad philanthropic work,” Steve
says. “We want to be a part of creating a community that
provides family stability and meaningful jobs. And we want
to give back to the community that’s been so good to us over
the years.”
