LEAD.
A FIT commUnITY
It’s the coveted big blue line that attracts over 1,200 area
residents to participate in the CrimFit Adult Training Program
each spring. Considered the largest training program for a
single athletic event in the country, CrimFit answers a need
for people who want to finish the race and lead a healthier
lifestyle.
“We’ve got room for everybody,” says Sarah Kelly Hartman,
CrimFit Adult Training Program Coordinator. “This program has
really made a difference to so many people who never thought
that they’d do anything like this.”
Sarah coordinates the program and also serves as a volunteer
group leader. She treks across Genesee County every Tuesday
evening with people who have a goal of finishing the race and
improving their health.
Group leaders are the backbone of the 15-week program, Sarah
says. They range in age from 18 to 86, meeting their groups in
different locations each week to keep the training experience
interesting. Under their leadership, participants learn to train
properly and improve their fitness levels.
With 95 percent of program participants finishing the race,
CrimFit leaders know they are helping hundreds of people
achieve their goals along with promoting a healthier life.
A Community Foundation grant of $24,722 from the Arthur
L. Tuuri Health Fund supported program costs.
“I see the training program as such a positive thing for Flint,”
Sarah says. “How many towns can brag about large groups of
runners and walkers weaving through town on Tuesday nights?
“We’re putting Flint in a healthier light and helping people feel
better about themselves and the community.”
