similar tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, but many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir aviators attended <strong>the</strong> Air Force schools as well.<br />

In many specific cases, those who eventually became POWs <strong>in</strong> North <strong>Vietnam</strong><br />

were graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. Air Force Academy, which also provided a version <strong>of</strong> precommission<strong>in</strong>g<br />

survival tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. For many, <strong>the</strong>ir experience at <strong>the</strong> Air Force Academy<br />

<strong>in</strong> general, and <strong>the</strong> USAFA survival tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> particular, proved to be <strong>of</strong> some benefit.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> best survival tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g I got was at <strong>the</strong> Air Force Academy. It was just go<strong>in</strong>g through<br />

<strong>the</strong> fourth class [freshman] system…it taught me personal discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

what I was told to do <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent survival schools.” 26<br />

Edward J. Mechenbier, a<br />

POW <strong>in</strong> <strong>Vietnam</strong> and a USAFA graduate, also recalled some specific Academy<br />

experiences while a prisoner. “Sometimes it was just that ‘I have been here before’ or<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ner which is <strong>in</strong>stilled <strong>in</strong> you at <strong>the</strong> Academy was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs that kept me<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g.” 28<br />

Although he did not experience survival tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at USAFA, Col John Fer<br />

noted that his Academy tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g environment was a shock, and that transitioned very well<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a POW camp. 29<br />
